REAL NUMBERS: Global Day of Action participation
In an attempt to document the numbers participating in the worldwide Global Day of Action protests, data from IMC (and a few other sources) are used to offer an accurate portrayal of worldwide participation. It is unfortunate how this information was denied/ignored by many media sources.

Army Cancels Special Ops Bible Project, Seeks to Create Loophole to Evade FOIA Request
Rather than publicly disclose details about its planned production of 10,000 modified Bibles, the U.S. Army Special Operations Command has withdrawn a purchase order that it placed with the International Bible Society (IBS) to carry out the project.

The Army's abrupt cancellation of its planned contract with IBS is a blatant attempt to circumvent the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Its cancellation of the order for enhanced Bibles couldn't be more suspect: the agency withdrew the order after receiving my request for related photos and documents I had submitted under the FOIA.

What a coincidence, eh?

Here's how the Army is trying, but ultimately will fail, to find a loophole in the law to maintain the secrecy of this initiative.

interview by Geov Parrish 22.03.2005 22:31
TURF: THE GREEN DREAM _ The Man Who Invented Ecotopia
The following is an extended, edited version of Geov Parrish's interview with Ecotopia author Ernest Callenbach on the 30th anniversary of his futuristic novel about Pacific Northwest secession. The story is told from the perspective of an American reporter, William Weston, who is one of the first outsiders allowed into Ecotopia some 20 years after Washington, Oregon, and Northern California have successfully separated themselves from the rest of America to form a new country. What he finds is an alternative universe, a place that is socially progressive, hardworking, and connected to nature. It is a society without the internal combustion engine but with maglev trains. It is, in many respects, the first picture of how a modern society could be restructured around environmental principles, and in that, was both reflective of its era and a road map for future ecologically aware development. Ecotopia proved to be a seminal book. Not only did it sell nearly 1 million copies in nine languages and generate a sequel, it became something of a utopian manifesto for the green movement, including the German Green Party.

Today, at age 75, Callenbach is retired from his day job at University of California Press, where he was founder and editor of Film Quarterly. He lives and writes in Berkeley, Calif., where Geov Parrish talked with him by phone. He, like his fictional character William Weston, offers his observations on the Ecotopian phenomenon, how far it's come, and where it is likely to go in the years ahead.-The Editors

Ex-German Defense Minister Andreas von Bulow's book on CIA complicity in the 9-11 attacks
Andreas von Bulow, ex-German Defense Minister, wrote 911 book on U.S. complicity AJ: I am so honored to have on Andreas von Bulow former German defense minister, head of their defense department and of course until just a few years ago, head of their technology system which is, that is a very high level post, just as high level as defense minister there in Deutschland. And he's written a best selling book and I've read some quotes out of it that have been translated into English. And the title translated is '911 and the CIA.' And he lays out the evidence of the military-industrial complex carrying out the attacks. Also we have lined up Michael Micher. And he of course was the English environmental minister who resigned over Tony Blair's fraud. He has written articles saying that if they didn't carry it out, they certainly funded and allowed them to take place. So, if you've got a brain, it's clear, and Mr. von Bulow, very intelligent individual has gone over this. So, sir, you've said that on the day of the event you began to look at it, you began to research it. And, from your specific expertise in intelligence and military and technology, you know heading up entire sectors of the world's third largest economy.

Please discuss for us your research and how you wrote the book and what really happened on 9 11.

"It is a conspiracy theory to say that they did it alone. From your intensive research and your understanding of high-level government activities, what do you think really happened on 9 11?"

Viva the People! the revolution begins with deconstructing High Educational funding
This idea is truly amazing and I think should expand to PSU as PSFU (Portland Student Funded University ... I love saying "FU"), WSU as well as PCC should be PSFC (Portland Student College). Devaney/Woon if you are reading this please think about what this kind of movement would do to the dynamics of the student/administration "relationship".

The idea hamsters that came up with Oregon Student University should be given metals! The very renaming of the university might just empower the students.

I have thought of something similiar in the past, but this renaming is totally awesome. I think we should continue this in other organiztions that either do not reflect the social justice or gives the illusion of state or federal assistence... maybe the Veteran's Affairs Department, Oregon High Education, the Oregon Health Plan, Adult and Family Services, Oregon Department of Forestry and other misleading names of departments and oreganizations.

What I was thinking is we need to merge a student movement (k-12 and higher) with a workers' movement and with the marginalized silenced population (the homeless, under-employed, nonemployed, unemployed, wage slaves, the medically needy, elderly and others) into a new movement called Mamook Tilicums (Chinook jargon for "Working People" or the "doing, acting or performing tribe") or for short The Mamook!

Intellectual Ferment in the Party

QUESTION : I was just wondering if you could speak a little bit to how--while not throwing out democratic centralism or something like that--how do you have the party in the mix of all of these ideas? You went to China and you talked to these people around how China was opening up to the West and saying Marcos was a great leader and this, that and the other, and you were asking these people in the Chinese party and they didn't have the answers. And part of it is: did those people not have the answers, or did they have some questions on it, but they were more debating it internally and they couldn't talk to you about it? How can you have the mix of people being able to be in the midst of all the questions that are going on, intellectually--political questions, but also in the ideological realm--without breaking democratic centralism? How do you have people in the mix of that, being able to engage it and even in some ways go off in the wrong direction in order to eventually get to the right direction, but then not have that cause a splintering effect. You know?

Bush's Culture of Life: Let the Insurance Companies Pull the Plug When the Sick Cost Too Much

Feeding Frenzy Over a Feeding Tube

By JOHN FARLEY

The political circus surrounding Terri Schiavo is absolutely unbelievable. The recent actions of the House, Senate, and White House reek of hypocrisy. The facts of the case are simple: husband Michael Schiavo is Terri's legal guardian, the courts have held that Terri would not want the feeding tube, and he has asked for the feeding tube to removed. Not surprisingly, the courts have backed Michael Schiavo. The Schiavo case is a no-brainer. Literally.

Breaking news / Biscuit update: Green Bridge camp being evicted
i just spoke on the phone with an activist in Southern Oregon who told me that the current forest defense camp near the Fiddler timber sale in the Biscuit fire area is being evicted "right now".

This second camp was set up about a week ago because the first camp, right next to the Green Bridge on Eight Dollar road, had been in place for two weeks, which is the legal limit for a campsite on National Forest land. The second camp was on Bureau of Land Management land, about a mile up the road, and outside the closure that the Forest Service declared around the Fiddler units.

"This is not stopping the resistance," the activist declared. "We are going to regroup and keep pushing it."

9 on Schiavo case, did husband attempt murder in 1990? , etc., ask a forensic pathologist
what a troubling story this is, particularly in how those claiming for Terri's civil rights are being branded as "nuts." Gee, thanks corporate America. Civil rights claims get national media time calling people "nuts." And corporate media ignores how easy it is to poke a hole through the husband's conflict of interest story about "persistant vegetative state".

INSTEAD

The husband is a conflict of interest story.
The wife is an example of how her husband has successfully squashed her own civil rights, so far.

The Face of Protest is A Changin'
The critical issue to emerge from this weekend is not medical ethics, but the failure of the US anti-War movement to focus public attention on the fear, death and suffering caused by President Bush's foreign policy.  There are two reasons for this failure:  control of the media by political forces that support the Evangelical agenda, and refusal of the US progressive movement to move beyond the protest style of the 1960s anti-war movement.   As a result, the new face of protest in America has shifted from anti-war to religious militancy.

So this call-to-action is definitely important. Once again, it's about the Bush administration pushing the envelope, arggh.
