Film Series: Peak Oil, Foreign Policy, 9-11 and the Media
Teach-in earlier this year The major issues of Peak Oil, a just foreign policy, a media that aspires to something greater than being stenographers to power, and a government accountable for its actions against its citizens transcend the coming election. On many of these issues it is pollyanna-ish to believe that our elected national leaders will even take up these issues; instead, we must educate ourselves to become a political force that cannot be ignored.

Exhibitionism, Trolls and Indy Media
There is a serious problem with Independent Media Centers (IMCs) in the open comment areas. IMCs end up publishing as much content *against* freedom, racism, sexism, classism, etc., as they do *for* those things via the open comment areas. "Trolls," or people who stalk indy media sources and writers, work hard at publishing as much hate mail in comment areas on IMCs as the individual IMC editorial groups will allow or overlook. They do not deserve to be published, plain and simple. It is time the plug was pulled on the trolls.

Local community activist Mark Lakeman discusses local election issues/candidates on portland indymedia webradio
Mark Lakeman, well known for his work in City Repair, who ran for City Commissioner in the Spring primary for Randy Leonard's seat (coming in second), appeared on portland indymedia web radio today to talk about all the local initiatives appearing on the Oregon ballot this cycle. Measures 31-38 were discussed, as well as the Portland Mercury's bizarre (or was it?) endorsement of Francesconi for Mayor.

The results? The group was split on Measures 31-33, but agreed on the following: Yes on 34, No on 35, No on 36, a HUGE No on 37, and No on 38. For Mayor, Potter, and for City Commissioner, Sam Adams.

You can listen to an archive of the show here.

Outrageous Yes on 36 Flyer
Gordon Smith: Keeping Oregon Safe for Heterosexuals I just got a flyer in the mail from the Defense of Marriage Coalition. It is full of outrageous lies, a grammar error (I guess the teachers didn't actually write it) and a prophetic misspelling (See quote by Clark Brody)

Measure 36 would do none of the things alleged in this propaganda. It would only enshrine discrimination in the Oregon Constitution.

Gordon Smith's quote about "natural rearing and nurturing of children... under the most ideal circumstances" makes me wonder is he next going to ban fertility treatments and divorce?

Free Speech Radio's Uncritical Alliance with Indian Country Today (newspaper)?
In today's broadcast of "Free Speech Radio", I heard commentary quoting the newspaper "Indian Country Today" in a way that appeared to make it sound as if this assimilationist newspaper is an authoritative, unbiased source in Indian country. Critical thinkers would do well to investigate the actual truth that this newspaper, led by editor Tim Giago, may as well have an open alliance with federal mandates to suppress, quell and silence traditional voices. Autonomous (non-ideological) Natives/Indians expose the games of assimilationist-seeking "Indian Country Today" (note: even Leftism is assimilationist when you want liberation from an *entire* value system!)

Mink are active species that do not adapt well to life in a cage. Over the past decade, the campaign to stop the bloody fur trade has been enormously successful. The habit of wearing fur has been exposed and stigmatized as blatant animal cruelty. But despite our gains, we are now at a critical juncture. Young celebrities and designers are flaunting animal skins as coats and trim once again, and the public is being swayed.
More than ever before, we need to join together to speak out for the 40 million animals who are trapped, imprisoned, gassed, strangled and anally electrocuted by the fur trade!

Driver Tries To Off Katherine Harris
A Florida motorist was arrested Wednesday on charges of trying to run down U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris at an intersection where the controversial former state elections chief was campaigning for re-election to Congress.

No one was hurt. Witnesses noted the car's license tag number and police tracked the owner, Barry Seltzer, 46, of Sarasota, who was jailed early Wednesday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He said he was annoyed because some of Harris' supporters were blocking traffic, the arrest report said.

"I was exercising my political expression," it quoted him as saying. "I did not run them down, I scared them a little."
