Police Blame Bush for Use of Force in Jacksonville Last Week
BUSH'S UNSCHEDULED DINNER STOP THE RATIONAL FOR EXCESSIVE FORCE?
HELL NO.

In Thursday's Mail Tribune, Jacksonville City Administrator Paul Wyntergreen claims the decision to order riot cops to force protestors east of the intersection of California Street and Third Street was something that wasn't expected and thus unavoidable. He is quoted as saying, "It was a sudden change of plans and we had to change gears suddenly". Are we supposed accept this as a reason for an aggressive assault on peaceful protestors? When Bush was ushered from the Expo to the Jacksonville Inn through an alley, demonstrators remained along California Street. Are we supposed to believe that only after the President had finished dining did it occur to the police that protestors needed to be moved back a block?

What were the responsible law enforcement agencies doing while Bush was eating dinner?

I hope there are enough grief counselors on call to help Kerry supporters deal with their profound grief if their man loses the presidential election. Israelis Strongly Support Bush Win
Opinion polls show that Israelis stand alone internationally in their rock-solid support for Bush, considering him the best ally the Jewish state has ever had in the White House.

Leaving little doubt that this sentiment reaches to the very top, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon even managed to forget Kerry's name briefly during a recent newspaper interview.

While polls show much of the world hostile to Bush and his Iraq policies, Israelis back him by a ratio of two to one -- a sign of gratitude for neutralizing their strongest Arab foe.

New Mexico e-Voting Machines Fail
Kim Griffith voted on Thursday - over and over and over.

She went to Valle Del Norte Community Center in Albuquerque, planning to vote for John Kerry. "I pushed his name, but a green check mark appeared before President Bush's name," she said.

Griffith erased the vote by touching the check mark at Bush's name. That's how a voter can alter a touch-screen ballot.

She again tried to vote for Kerry, but the screen again said she had voted for Bush. The third time, the screen agreed that her vote should go to Kerry.

She faced the same problem repeatedly as she filled out the rest of the ballot. On one item, "I had to vote five or six times," she said.

GOP Brownshirts Move to Crush Ohio Vote
Walden W. O'Dell, Chairman of the Board, President, and CEO of Diebold, Inc. Republican Party officials in Ohio took formal steps yesterday to place thousands of recruits inside polling places on Election Day to challenge the qualifications of voters they suspect are not eligible to cast ballots. They say their effort is necessary to guard against fraud arising from aggressive moves by the Democrats to register tens of thousands of new voters in Ohio, seen as one of the most pivotal battlegrounds in the Nov. 2 elections. Ohio Democrats were struggling to match the Republicans' move, which had been rumored for weeks. Both parties had until 4 p.m. to register people they had recruited to monitor the election. Republicans said they had enlisted 3,600 by the deadline, many in heavily Democratic urban neighborhoods of Cleveland, Dayton and other cities. Each recruit was to be paid $100. The Democrats, who tend to benefit more than Republicans from large turnouts, said they had registered more than 2,000 recruits to try to protect legitimate voters rather than weed out ineligible ones. Republican officials said they had no intention of disrupting voting but James P. Trakas, a Republican co-chairman in Cuyahoga County, said the recruits would be equipped with lists of voters who the party suspects are not county residents or otherwise qualified to vote. Among other things, he said, the recruits will be trained how to challenge mentally disabled voters who are assisted by anyone other than their legal guardians. For the Democrats in Dayton, Ronald Magoteaux, 57, a mechanical engineer, said he agreed to be a poll watcher out of concern for new voters. "I think it's sick that these Republicans are up to dirty tricks at the polls," Mr. Magoteaux said. "I believe thousands of votes were lost in 2000, and I want to make sure that doesn't happen in Ohio." Among the main swing states, only Ohio, Florida and Missouri require the parties to register poll watchers before Election Day; elsewhere, party observers can register on the day itself.

Criminal Charges In South Dakota Absentee Ballots, GOP Board Member Resigns
Six Republican notary publics face misdemeanors in connection with absentee ballot applications filled out on South Dakota college campuses.

Attorney General Larry Long says the number of improper absentee requests range from a few hundred to more than a thousand. He says several Democratic lawyers have already told him they plan to challenge the validity of those applications in court.

One former state lawmaker is, as of Wednesday, also a former member of the South Dakota Republican Party's executive board.

Jan Nicolay, who represented Sioux Falls for 14 years in the state House of Representatives and was chairman of the appropriations committee, said negative campaign tactics and what she views as mishandling of the absentee ballot process led to her decision.

"I'm not happy with that at all," Nicolay said of an absentee ballot snafu that affected voters on several college campuses.

GOP Voter Drive Accused of Tossing Cards in OR, NV (also PA, WV, MN)
Arizona-based Sproul & Associates is under investigation in Oregon and Nevada over claims that canvassers hired by the company were instructed to register only Republicans and to get rid of registration forms completed by Democrats.

Substitute teacher Adam Banse wanted a summer job with flexible hours, so he signed up to knock on doors in suburban Minneapolis and register people to vote.

He quit after two hours. "They said if you bring back a bunch of Democratic cards, you'll be fired," Banse contends. "At that point, I said, `Whoa. Something's wrong here.'"

In West Virginia, Lisa Bragg said she refused a sorely needed $9-an-hour job to register voters after attending an orientation session conducted by Sproul employees.

Like Banse in Minnesota, she said canvassers were discouraged from registering Democrats and were told to misrepresent themselves as poll takers.

In Pennsylvania, Democrats in the state House of Representatives have asked the attorney general to investigate complaints from former Sproul canvassers who said they had been instructed to not register Democrats. About 40 to 50 also complained they had not been promptly paid.

In Pittsburgh, library patrons protested that Sproul employees were pressuring people to register as Republicans at tables set up outside a Carnegie Library branch.

A Response to the "Kerry in Swing State" Petition Signers

Many of the individuals who gave a blanket endorsement to Nader in the 2000 election have signed a petition urging "support for Kerry/Edwards in all swing states, even while we strongly disagree with Kerry's policies on Iraq and other issues." (See: http://www.votetostopbush.com)

Many warned at the time that some sort of "strategic voting" would be needed in 2000. (See my piece "A New Way To Vote -- As A Duet" http://www.commondreams.org/views/102900-105.htm)

Clearly, in states which Bush or Kerry have basically stated they will lose -- so-called "non-swing states" -- voting for whoever you want is a no-brainer.

DEATH BY STONING FOR GAYS AND ADULTERERS? DECODING THE BUSH/EXTREME-RIGHT AGENDA.
In his new book, "Cruel and Unusual: Bush/Cheney's New World Order," Mark Crispin Miller paints a sobering picture of the American extreme right and its campaign to dismantle Constitutional government and replace it with a pseudo-religious, "Christo-fascist" theocracy in which Old Testament law--and the Ten Commandments--would be brutally enforced. Death by stoning for adultery, for abortion, for homosexuality, and even for disobedient children. Could it happen here? Is the Bush administration already pursuing this vision? And will we vote to reject this vision on November 2? Yes, we will!

The city even has a thrift shop called Free Geek that's "helping the needy get nerdy." It sells used computer parts and recycles PCs. The machines are loaded with Linux and other free software and given to charities and volunteers.

A Bush pre-election strike on Iran 'imminent'
According to White House and Washington Beltway insiders, the Bush administration, worried that it could lose the presidential election to Senator John F. Kerry, has initiated plans to launch a military strike on Iran's top Islamic leadership, its nuclear reactor at Bushehr on the Persian Gulf, and key nuclear targets throughout the country, including the main underground research site at Natanz in central Iran and another in Isfahan.....

The Iran attack plan was reportedly drawn up after internal polling indicated that if the Bush administration launched a so-called anti-terrorist attack on Iran some two weeks before the election, Bush would be assured of a landslide win against Kerry.

Ohio Voters Report Fake Calls: "change polling place" NOT From Board of Elections
The caller told the elderly woman that her voting site had changed and that on Nov. 2 she and her husband should cast their ballots at a South Side precinct. He even left the phone number of the board.

Her husband, who didn't want their names published out of fear of retribution, called the board, sat through a long menu of automated options and finally spoke with an employee.

"They said there was no way in the world they would make such a call," he said. "I think it's hankypanky and somebody in the election is trying to kill some votes."

At no time, Elections Director Matthew Damschroder said, does the board call voters. "The only communication from the board of elections is printed on official board of elections paper with the logo," he said.

"If they're saying they're the board of elections, that's a violation of the law. My recommendation to them would be to cease and desist."

Flawed Integrity of Florida Virtual Vote - Doubters Say They'll Take To Streets
But if this proves to be another ultra-close vote, many critics of electronic balloting including the many Democrats who believe the 2000 election was stolen say they'll take to the streets.

"I was angry last time. This time it'd be quadruple the anger," said Francois Jean, 27, whose ramshackle ranch house in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood is festooned with Kerry placards. "The system we were supposed to believe in failed us like we didn't even vote, like we were aliens from outer space who didn't count."

David Niven, a political science professor at Florida Atlantic University, expects massive demonstrations if exit polling is close and lawsuits and technical problems overshadow a clear victory.

"I don't know if there will be rioting in the streets with pitch forks and torches after all, many of these people are 75 years old," Niven said. "But it's fair to say that their level of anger will grow exponentially from four years ago."
