Horse Abuse, Susan Matlock Arraigned Tomorrow
Pete BANKS, Ore. -- Six horses are recovering after being severely neglected and abused by a veterinarian, Susan Matlock.
"Most of these guys had so many worms and so many skin infections and they're eyes had gone flat because of dehydration," said Equine Rescue worker Krissy Matterson. One horse, Shetan, when rescued and taken out of the shed, squinted his eyes due to prolonged exposure to the darkness. Animal services seized the horses from Susan Matlock's property in Banks, where they were eating their own waste and wood from their stalls to survive. One of the horses (Pete), needs a $6,000 life-saving surgery next week. Donations are being accepted at Bank of the West.

Time for Congress to Side with Workers
On Labor Day, neither the Republican or Democratic Party candidates focused on the crisis in our workforce—high levels of unemployment and underemployment, low wages, the right to organize undermined, no job security, losing competition to the world market. Yesterday, Ralph Nader called for a civil rights movement for workers; today he highlights the downward trend for US workers and the need for Congress to take action.

Oregon Greens splitting?
As if the Green Party hasn't had enough to deal with these days, now this. On August 24, Liz Trojan, the Co-chair of the Pacific Green Party stepped down from her post and exited the Party altogether. Only six days later her fellow co-chair, Jeff Strang abandoned his co-chair position but remained a member of the Party. The two are furious over a recent incident in which an Oregon Green candidate for the House of Representatives, Teresa Keane, switched races and decided to run for US Senate instead.

Second Thoughts on Ralph Nader
I HEARD Ralph Nader speak recently at the annual conference of the Northeast Organic Farmers Association at Hampshire College in Amherst. Nader did not give a campaign speech but debated the proper role of government with libertarian Republican congressman Ron Paul of Texas. He was vintage Nader, telling the political truth about a wide range of policy questions of interest to the organization's unusual mix of traditional New England conservatives, savvy, up-to-date activists and a bewildering variety of contrarians.

An Anti-Labor Day That Lives in Infamy
Polls suggest that 60 percent of non-unionized workers say they would join a union if they had a chance. The Democrats have produced no laws, indeed have campaigned against laws, that would make that attainable. John Kerry's proposal on the minimum wage in 2004 would raise it to $7 an hour by 2007, far below where it stood in real terms nearly 40 years ago.

FEMA misled the public about the WTC collapse!
WTC 1 versus WTC 2 Had WTC been built correctly, it should have burned out and not collapsed, causing smaller material damage and much fewer victims among almost 1000, who died under the zones of impact in and around the both towers. Because the retribution should be proportional to the injury, so exposing design flaws causing the WTC collapse would have weakened the argument for the retribution war in Iraq. Hiding design flaws blame for part of the injury, and keeping all blame on the attackers, implied more retribution, i.e. a stronger argument for the war. FEMA used very sophisticated technical tricks to avoid truth pointing to design flaws and corruption of the WTC capital project.

Biscuit Survives Summer

It is hard to imagine but as Labor Day passes, not a single tree in the 500,000 acre Biscuit area has fallen under the extreme Bush Biscuit logging project. The campaign is fraught with peril and damage has been done, but this is a time to breathe a sigh of relief and celebrate a job well done so far and a forest well into its third year of natural recovery.

The most diverse National Forest in the American West still faces the largest timber sale in modern history, but the rivers, rare plants and serpentine forests of the Biscuit will remain largely intact for another winter.
