Kitzhaber creating natural-resource center
By making this move, Kitzhaber appears to be addressing the heart of the debate. But we must be asking what the focus of this center is going to be; Will it be determining policy? Designing and interpreting research studies? Advising legislators about land management? What is its role going to be in National Forests/State Parks/BLM/National Parks governmental decision-making??

Assuming this institute's recommendations will carry any weight at all, (remember how very effective our "Independent" Police Review Board here in portland has been), we need to know if this "independent resources policy institute" is tied to timber funding & lobbyists and/or environmentalist groups' (non-existent) funding and lobbyists... If it isn't tied to either of these, it might be a good thing.

But then who IS funding it? If it's Kitzhaber, it might actually have merit. He seemed pretty distressed with the lack of effectiveness of the legislative beauracracy based on his parting words on leaving office... (that the government isn't going to fix Oregon's problems, only community involvement will do that...) And if it's not being funded by Kitzhaber, then who's funding it?

WHEW! 9-11's UAL93 and UAL175 are safe after all--just like supposed hijackers, still alive
planes still rarin' to go!

UAL93 landed safely after all, at Cleveland Hopkins Airport instead of crashing in Pennslyvania.

UAL175 instead of crashing into WTC2, safely made it somehow to Chicago where it has a 'second lease' on life after a slight name change, reconstrutive surgery, and a well deserved vacation from NYC airports.

I just love these happy-ending, gushing, human interest stories, don't you?
I'm sure United Airlines is glad to hear it as well! This means they can give back the millions that they took from the federal government bailouts in late 2001. This means that the people on UAL93 and UAL175 weren't killed after all in terror operations in Pennsylvania or at the WTC. All it means is an old fashioned U.S. police style mass execution at Cleveland Hopkins and it's still up in the air where the UAL175 people went: into the sea or gunned down by the U.S.'s finest somewhere else?

Anyway, all I can say is WHEW! At least the war on terror is over. The U.S. did it. That's a huge relief.

Major Legal Victory for Cascadia's Forests!
Northern Spotted Owl Big news just in on the forest front, so good to hear in the face of everything of late!

A major lawsuit regarding Spotted Owl habitat was victorius today on appeal in the federal 9th circuit court (just below the Supreme Court). The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's (USFWS) narrow interpretation of the Endangered Species Act's (ESA) protections for habitat critical to threatened and endangered fish and wildlife was overturned!

The judge found that that logging Spotted Owl "critical habitat" in Oregon and Washington constituted "destruction or adverse modification" of habitat, an activity prohibited by the ESA. The Forest Service and USFWS had said that only the "Late Successional Reserves" (LSRs) set up by Clinton Administration were necessary for protection for the Owl. The judge rejected this, stating that ALL recognized owl habitat must be protected.
