Come to New York City for the month of August to run with the RC YB ,NYC

We are at a moment in history where Bush & Kerry and the whole ruling class are looking for a mandate--looking for an approving thumbs-up, or at least a complicit silence from people in this country for their whole war-of-empire horrors and homeland repression. They want to go forward--with whoever wins--and say, "This was the will of the people." But MILLIONS are fed-up with this program and do not want to go along with it.

Greens Endorse Kerry: The Politics of Mendacity
Significant numbers of registered Greens are disillusioned by the whole charade. Many have decided to back Ralph Nader or abandon the party all together. It is just too embarrassing they contend. Politics isn't for the faint of heart, and a party that was founded on radical environmental ideals cannot afford to become the club of concessions and compromise. Progressive voters have the banal Democrats for that.

AIDS Activist adds another voice to the SHAC Campaign
Peter Tatchell is a leading gay and human rights campaigner (in England). Peter Tatchell says that animal experiments have undermined HIV research and hindered new treatments. Here is an article he wrote for SHAC:

The development of life-saving protease inhibitor treatments for HIV was delayed for four years by the pharmaceutical company Merck, after the first trials of protease drugs killed laboratory dogs and rats. During those four years, tens of thousands of people with AIDS died, perhaps needlessly. Many might have benefited from the new drugs, including my dear friend, the filmmaker Derek Jarman. He and many others could now be alive if Merck had not submitted its protease research programme to the "Russian roulette" of animal testing. APS Uniform Glossary of Terms
As President Bush, the nation's number one terrorist, but as is well known a figure head, prepares to release its report on "mental health", with its appropriately Orwellian name "Report by Freedom Committee on Mental Health", one should pause to consider the types of methods utilized by the National Security State to bring about martial law. One of these methods is APS, also known as mind control. Persons who hold beliefs about political reality contrary to those imbued in the nations television viewing middle class are subject to being psych-labelled, with consequent forced medication which produces permanent brain damage. In particular, there are doubtless many government psychiatrists just drooling over the possibility of the out-patient committement of persons who believe that 911 was carried out via remote control technology.

Events for Saturday August 7th

Black Cross First Aid Training this Saturday, August 7th in Portland

Augustana Lutheran Church, 2710 N.E. 14th Ave @ 10am Black Cross Health Collective will conduct an eight hour training in basic first aid for protests. All are welcome. The idea is to teach a lot of useful information in a hands-on setting where we have some fun and you learn how to be immediately effective. This information will be useful for those folks who will be going to the Republican National Convention in New York City, but it would also be useful if you come across someone who is knocked off their bicycle by a car. We teach decontamination from chemical weapons such as tear gas and pepper spray and how to deal with blunt trauma, such as when the police hit you with a club, as well as other useful skills. [ more information ]

Benefit this Saturday for the PDX to RNC Legal Fund

Portland IWW Hall/Back to Back Cafe, 614 E. Burnside @ 8pm According to the New York legal team, the best thing we can do in preparing to come to the RNC protests is to raise legal defense money beforehand. This doesn't mean we're planning to go out and get arrested - it just means that in chaotic situations, you never know what will happen. We're going as medics and journalists and bike activists, we're going to let our Oregon representatives know that we're watching them, and we're going to plug in where the New York organizers need us. So if you support the cause, or if you just want to hear some good music, come out and drop a couple bucks in the hat. [ more information ]

On Aug 3, Trinity County, California became only the second county in the nation to ban the growing of genetically engineered (GE) crops and animals. By a vote of 3-1, Trinity County Supervisors elected to ban GE crops and animals in an effort to protect Trinity's local economy and environment.

Trinity County's decision reflects a growing movement across America to defend local agriculture, biodiversity and human health. Four other California counties will vote in December to ban genetically engineered crops in their county, while dozens of counties across the country are advancing "GE Free" Zones.
