Texas denies Unitarians tax status for not having "one system of belief."
For any organization to qualify as a religion, members must have "simply a belief in God, or gods, or a higher power." Denials of the Red River Unitarian Universalist Church in Denison and the North Texas Church of Freethought in Carrollton, as well as an earlier denial by Sharp for the Ethical Culture Fellowship of Austin, were ordered because the organizations did not mandate belief in a supreme being. In addition to the Denison Unitarian church, the rejected groups include a Carrollton group of atheists and agnostics, a New Age group in Bastrop, and the Whispering Star Clan/Temple of Ancient Wisdom, an organization of witches in Copperas Cove.

Both resignations, perhaps soon to be followed by resignations from Colin Powell and his deputy Richard Armitage, are about the imminent and extremely messy demise of George W. Bush and his Neocon administration in a coup d'etat being executed by the Central Intelligence Agency. The coup, in the planning for at least two years, has apparently become an urgent priority as a number of deepening crises threaten a global meltdown.

Ralph Nader's flawed strategy
two capitalists with different ideas on how to save capitalism Ralph Nader rails at the corporate elite without bothering to explain that its deeds are not the product of accidental evil-doers or flawed personalities but rather the workings of the system, a system that is as reformable as a cancer that threatens to devour the entire living organism. No corporate master in history has voluntarily acceded to the interests of its wage slaves. If he did, he would be compelled to give ground to others in the business-for-profit rat race who see scruples as an unaffordable luxury.

Where has the center gone?
The center has been systematically destroyed by what is now identified as "neo-con" politics and which began in the 1960's with William Buckley's "National Review" characterization of "liberalism" as "leftist". This "conservative" viewpoint took off with Barry Goldwater's "Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice," (which really says that the center constituted an attack on liberty), and continues up to the present day with Dubya's idea that "You are with us or against us," (which really means that if you object to the domination of politics by the Republican Party, as manifest in the USA Patriot Act, you are a supporter of terrorism).

Wal-Mart - Over $1,000,000,000 in government subsidies
In this extensively researched study, we show that the giant retailer has received more than $1 billion in economic development subsidies from state and local governments across the country. Taxpayers have helped finance not only Wal-Mart stores, but also the company's huge network of distribution centers, more than 90% of which have gotten subsidies. The report also includes policy proposals, including a prohibition on subsidies to big-box retailers except in distressed areas that are underserved by retail outlets (and in those cases the recipient of the subsidy should be required to pay a living wage.)

reagan was a despicable and dangerous man. it's really unfortunate that men like this die in comfort surrounded by loved ones in their beautiful homes at an advanced age. i take some solace in the fact that he was losing his mind for the past few decades and by the end didn't even recognize his wife. perhaps, when he finally closed his eyes for the last time, he thought himself surrounded by hostile strangers.
