All this needless death - It is so sad
Yesterday I walked along the waterfront of the Willamette River as it passes through downtown Portland. There lingered on the sidewalk chalkmark Christian crosses, Stars of David, a few Islamic moons. Each commemorating a now dead US combatant. The line of marks was very long, surprisingly long. It was hard not to shed a tear. How long will the line be next year?

Saca's First Day as President Met with Mass Condemnation in El Salvador
On Tuesday, June 1,Tony Saca was sworn in as the new president of El Salvador. In what sounded like a joke that went from bad to worse, Saca former president of the National Association of Private Business (ANEP) gave a speech applauding economic policies like CAFTA while throwing around the jargon of "human development," "social responsibility", "liberty" and "justice." All of the pomp and circumstance of the inauguration was made possible due to a giant militarized zone that prevented any protestors from getting close enough to deface the carefully crafted image of Saca as a populist president. All told, over 5000 troops and police forces were deployed to "protect" the ceremony from protesters and other would-be terrorists.

Stupidity Documentary Held Over at Clinton Street Theater
Due to popular demand, the hit documentary Stupidity is held over at Clintons.

This review from Portland's Newsweekly
Williamette Week

Stupidity

In one of the most compelling and entertaining films of the year, documentarian Albert Nerenberg asks one simple question: What is stupidity? It's much harder to answer than you might think, for, as Einstein theorized, the universe and stupidity are the only things that are infinite--and he had his doubts about the former. Amazingly, there has been no real academic study on stupidity, and there are only a handful of serious books on the topic, but that doesn't stop Nerenberg from blazing forward. The result is a sometimes funny, sometimes terrifying look at the human race and the stupid things it has done over the course of time. One of the theories Stupidity puts forth is that people prefer the act of "resisting intelligence," as it makes them feel more comfortable. In other words, ignorance is bliss. Which would explain why this country is in so much trouble. Thankfully, Nerenberg isn't content with simply pointing a finger and saying things like, "Bush is a moron." Instead, he offers some surprising theories, offering much intelligence behind the veneer of idiocy. Along with Super Size Me, Stupidity is one of the most important films you can see in town this week. Don't miss it. NR (DW)

But what about the public employees who didn't get a shit (and still don't) about what kinds of environmentally and socially damaging schemes their PERS monies were invested in?

If these guys weren't discovered, they'd still be lauded to the skies by the O and the corporate community.
