Ore. Lawyer Brandon Mayfield (Held in Spain Attack) Released!
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - An American lawyer who was arrested two weeks ago in connection with the terror attacks in Spain was set free Thursday after evidence pointed to another suspect in the deadly train bombings.

Brandon Mayfield, 37, was released soon after Spanish officials said fingerprints found on a bag near the bombing site were that of an Algerian. U.S. authorities had previously said the prints were Mayfield's. The bag contained detonators similar to those used in the March 11 blasts, which killed 191 people and injured 2,000 others.

``I want to thank my friends and family for what I'll call a harrowing ordeal,'' Mayfield, a convert to Islam, said as he walked out the federal courthouse in Portland, grasping his wife's hand and holding a Koran and a Muslim prayer rug.

In Arabic and then in English, Mayfield recited the Muslim prayer: ``God is great. There is no God but God.''

His three children, ages 10, 12 and 15, rushed up behind him, and his wife's eyes filled up with tears. The family has insisted Mayfield is innocent, saying he has not been out of the country for at least a decade.

Nation's thirst for gas reaching the limit
For some reason, America's politicians and special-interest groups never mention the limits of oil companies' capacity for making gasoline.

Why do the consumer-protection lobby and environmental groups say nothing about this real and urgent problem? They must see a gasoline shortage coming. Do they want it to occur? One of their favorite legislative goals, higher mileage standards for automobiles and light trucks, could soften the collision between gasoline demand and supply.

Federal whistleblower alleges politicization of science in '02 Klamath River fish kill
A federal biologist who said his team's advice was illegally ignored prior to a massive 2002 Klamath River fish kill has resigned, accusing the government of politicizing scientific decision-making and misleading the public. Michael Kelly had sought federal whistleblower protection after he complained the Bush administration violated the Endangered Species Act by pressuring for altered scientific findings...

Kelly resigned from the agency's Arcata, Calif., office Friday after nine years, saying Regional Manager Jim Lecky had again intervened in overturning his finding in the latest project to which he was assigned.

No Jobs & No Oil: the unsustainability of full employment and cheap energy
Industrial capitalism functions because of an equilibrium in the supply and demand of two crucial commodities: jobs and oil. Without either of the two, societies based upon such an economy will crumble.

Capitalist society requires new markets and industries which must constantly be found to enable economic growth and to replace jobs lost by technical efficiencies. But what if the supply of jobs cannot increase forever, but the demand for new jobs continues to grow?

Industrial society is also dependent upon the supply of cheap energy. In the 19th Century, following the growing use of coal, an even more dense, cheaper and abundant source of energy was tapped in the form of oil - industrial society flourished. We've now become complacent upon our supply of energy. But what if the supply of oil cannot increase forever, but the demand for more oil continues to grow?

The conclusion is simple: full employment and high energy consumption cannot be sustained. The death of industrial capitalist society as we know it is unavoidable.
