Ashland Tree-Sitters Oppose Big Timber
Forest Defenders Take Action At Society of American Foresters Meeting at SOU

Early this morning, students and community members set two tree-sits high in the branches of a tree near the Stevenson Union at Southern Oregon University. The action serves as a symbol of opposition to the rhetoric of old-growth logging put forth at the Society of American Foresters Annual Meeting underway on campus.

With a banner proclaiming "Save the Wild Siskiyou!" strung between the tree-tops, the action sends a strong message to the timber puppets arriving in Ashland this week.

Bush's 'moral high ground' slipping away - Rumsfeld or Myers as sacrificial lamb?
In Washington, people are already speculating on whether George W. Bush will slaughter a sacrificial lamb -- a step he avoided in previous embarrassments, including the failure to turn up weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Some are calling for Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's head. But a more probable candidate is General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who tried to talk the CBS television network into scrapping plans to broadcast photographs of prisoner abuse.

"My guess is that the general is the most likely candidate," said Ted Galen Carpenter, vice-president of defence and foreign-policy studies at Cato Institute in Washington.

Holding the high moral ground looks increasingly difficult for the President, who yesterday couldn't bring himself to apologize for the prisoner abuse in two damage-control interviews on Arab-language television.

Pollsters have found that Americans say they accept almost anything if they believe it will help the war against terrorism. It's conceivable that an apology to the Arab world might even hurt Mr. Bush at home.

Film Screening and Fundraiser - Crisis in Bolivia
Pacific Environment press release 06.05.2004 02:40
Schwarzenegger Contract Threatens to Terminate Endangered Pacific Grey Whales
California Governor Schwarzenegger's plan to sign over huge energy contracts to Sempra Energy will likely add significant risk to the Western Pacific Grey Whales, one of the world's most critically endangered whale populations, that feed in the waters off of Sakhalin Island, Russia. There are only about 100 of these whales remaining, and only 23 of the females are capable of calving. The whales feed adjacent to where a consortium of companies, including Shell Oil and Mitsubishi, are drilling for oil. Natural gas that is extracted near the oil platforms is a part of the overall integrated project, and is intended for markets abroad.

This Thursday, the California Public Utilities Commission, urged by the Governor, is considering approval of long-term contracts of electricity to the energy giant Sempra. It is likely that some of the new gas needed to meet these contracts would come from Sakhalin.

According to the Governor, the Sempra deal is necessary to avoid a future energy crisis in California. However, the rolling blackouts of 2000-2001 were caused not by a shortage of gas, but by energy manipulation, and by the shut-down of gas-fired power plants to comply with the Clean Air Act. Sempra is one of the companies who were responsible for manipulation of the state's energy supply. Awarding these huge contracts to Sempra would make rolling blackouts more, not less, likely.

2-for-1 Voting
In November, Americans won't be casting their ballots directly for George Bush, John Kerry or Ralph Nader. From a constitutional point of view, they will be voting for competing slates of electors nominated in each state by the contenders. Legally speaking, the decisions made by these 538 members of the Electoral College determine the next president.

In the case of Mr. Bush and Mr. Kerry, electors will be named by each state's political parties. But Ralph Nader is running as an independent. When he petitions to get on the ballot in each state, he must name his own slate of electors. While he is free to nominate a distinctive slate of names, he can also propose the very same names that appear on the Kerry slate.

If he does, he will provide voters with a new degree of freedom. On Election Day, they will see a line on the ballot designating Ralph Nader's electors. But if voters choose the Nader line, they won't be wasting their ballot on a candidate with little chance of winning. Since Mr. Nader's slate would be the same as Mr. Kerry's, his voters would be providing additional support for the electors selected by the Democrats. If the Nader-Kerry total is a majority in any state, the victorious electors would be free to vote for Mr. Kerry.

Prison Tour Erupts Into Chaos
The Iraqi prisoners dashed from their beige canvas tents, gathering at the edge of a razor-wire barrier in a desperate but defiant throng. Drowning out a U.S. Army general, they shouted epithets of anger at their treatment by American captors.

"Mr. Bush, is this the freedom you want for Iraq?" one man shouted in Arabic.

An amputee removed his prosthetic leg and waved it in protest. "How can I be a security detainee?" he asked. "What can I do without a leg?" A second man raised a metal cane above his head; five others brandished wooden crutches.

The chaotic scene unfolded in front of two busloads of journalists whom the U.S. military brought to the world's largest Army-run prison for a tour Wednesday morning, hours before President Bush went on two Arab television channels to discuss the abuses of detainees here last fall.

The virulence of the inmates visibly surprised military officers, who hustled the journalists back on their way. "Come on, in the bus," ordered Col. David Quantock, who commands the military police at the prison. "We've got other things to do."

Austrians Angry At Arnold's Holocaust Remark, Death Penalty Stance
(Sacramento Bee photo by Anne Chadwick Williams via Associated Press) Schwarzenegger, whose father was a member of the Austrian Nazi Party, has always sought to distance himself from that part of his history. He was invited to Israel by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a human rights group based in Los Angeles, to which he has contributed $1 million.

His comments about the Holocaust on Sunday were largely ignored by the Austrian media, including the state television and radio networks, but those who did get wind of his statements were typically irate.

"By his actions and statements, Schwarzenegger has proven that he is no longer an Austrian," said Werner Schwaerzler, a salesman in his 30s. "He is just another American and one who favors the death penalty at that."

From Andorra and Austria to Ukraine and the United Kingdom, the 36 members of the European Council agreed in 2002 to a total abolition of the death penalty regardless of circumstances. The death penalty is so unpopular on the continent that few politicians ever make it a campaign issue.
