Deaths of Scores of Mercenaries Hidden, Not Reported
At least 80 foreign mercenaries - security guards recruited from the United States, Europe and South Africa and working for American companies - have been killed in the past eight days in Iraq.

US authorities in Iraq are also aware that more Western mercenaries lost their lives in the past week than occupation soldiers over the past 14 days.

us france block UN probe into aristide ouster
The situation in Haiti clearly shows it is the Security Council, not the United Nations, which is really ineffective, Joan Russow of the Global Compliance Research Project told IPS.
''The Security Council has continued to violate the principle of sovereign equality in the U.N. Charter. The Council has been discredited primarily because of the use of the veto by the United States and specifically by the U.S. practice of intimidating, cajoling and offering check-book diplomacy.''

Girls have been faster learners for six million years, chimpanzee study shows
A study of young chimpanzees living in the wild might explain the biological reason why infant girls tend to learn faster than infant boys.

Professor Elizabeth Lonsdorf, head of field conservation at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, and her colleagues Lynn Eberly and Anne Pusey of the University of Minnesota believe that the gender differences in learning behaviour seen in young chimps and children could date back to when apes and humans last shared a common ancestor, about six million years ago.

Their four-year study, published in the journal Nature, involved filming 14 young chimps living in the Gombe National Park in Tanzania to observe how they learnt complex skills such as "fishing" for termites using a thin stick as a tool.

US Appoints Former Hussein Officers To Iraqi Security
The United States is about to appoint a large number of senior officers from the former army of Saddam Hussein to top jobs in the new Iraqi security forces in an attempt to prevent a repetition of last week's mutiny by several hundred Iraqi soldiers.

The newly trained Iraqi battalion refused to join the US Marines' attack on Falluja, saying its job was to defend the country, not to kill other Iraqis. The action cast doubt on the US aim of building up Iraqi forces to let US troops withdraw from the front line.

The appointment of officers from the old regime was advised by British officials last summer after the entire Iraqi army was disbanded by Paul Bremer, the top US administrator in Iraq, a move which sparked anger and discontent.

The Falluja mutiny has put a question mark over the army. They refused to move on Falluja even though they had several dozen US special forces with them to give leadership.

Ideological Hegemony: Thought Control in America
In June 2003 a Washington Post-ABC News poll found that about 1 in 4 Americans (incorrectly) believed Iraq had used weapons of mass destruction during the recent war with the United States. A separate poll in the same month found that 34% of Americans believed the United States had already found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. In September another poll found that 69% of Americans believed Saddam Hussein was personally involved in 9-11.

Even the Bush administration has been forced to admit that these claims are not true. These misconceptions are the outcome of a system of thought control called ideological hegemony.

Bushes, Cheneys Reaped Tax Benefits
The government's top two executives, both wealthy men, paid smaller shares of their income in federal taxes in 2003 than in the year before, according to returns released Tuesday by the White House.

Bush and his wife, Laura, paid $227,490 in federal income taxes — or about 28 percent of their $822,126 in adjusted gross income. For 2002, the Bushes paid about 31 percent of their adjusted gross income — slightly higher at $856,056 — in federal taxes, for a total of $268,719.

The difference from one year to the next was even more pronounced for Cheney. He and his wife, Lynne, owed $253,067 in 2003 federal taxes — about 20 percent of their $1.3 million in adjusted gross income. In 2002, the Cheneys earned less but paid more, owing 29 percent — or $341,114 — of their $1.2 million in income.

10 Years of the Northwest Forest Plan: Cascadia Eco-Resistance
forestfire2

PART II of a Two Part Feature - Click Here to Read Part I

Now, in Southern Oregon, the largest timber sale in history - 40+ square miles of logging - is taking shape, innocuously named the "Biscuit Recovery Project". Earth First! will hold its regional rendezvous there, June 10-14. The deep south Cascades are certain to be a hot spot: nearby, just across the CA border multinational energy giant Calpine (a co-conspirators with ENRON in the California energy crisis) and war profiteers Halliburton are planning to decimate 10,000's of acres of sacred tribal land around Medicine Lake for geothermal energy exploration.

East of the Cascade crest in Oregon massive old growth logging masquerading as forest-fire fuels reduction is being fought by groups like Blue Mountains Biodiversity Project and PROWL. New direct action groups like the Klamath-Salmon Action Network are activating in Northern California. The Cascadia Forest Defenders have a renewed womyn and trans gendered occupation in the forests near Eugene, OR. Citizen surveyors the Cascadia Wildlands Project and the tree-climbing Northwest Ecological Survey Team are all expanding their efforts.

In Portland:

Bark - Mt. Hood's timber sale monitors - is now facing dozens of logging operations, with logging season already begun at the Hipo and East Five-mile sales. Bark is holding a Community Forum on the issues on May 4th. The Cascadia RiSiNG! Eco-Defense Network support office (not to be confused with the Cascadia Rising Infoshop) promotes grassroots eco-resistance across Cascadia and helps folks find a place in the forest defense movement. Both groups need your support! Also, not to be missed: Wednesday and Thursday the Oxygen Collective will be speaking in Portland at PSU and Reed Colleges respectively.

As one Cascadian put it - "Bush is using Cascadia as his playground for a new forest policy, we will use it as our palette of resistance."

4 Halliburton Employee Bodies Found In Shallow Grave
Four bodies have been found in Iraq, possibly the remains of private contractors missing since an assault on their convoy outside Baghdad amid a wave of kidnappings of at least 22 foreigners.

A State Department official on Tuesday confirmed the discovery of the bodies. The private contractor, Halliburton Co., said it did not know whether the dead were its missing employees.

NBC News reported that the four bodies were in a shallow grave between Fallujah and Abu Ghraib, scene of the convoy attack, and that U.S. officials were led to the grave by an Iraqi.

Two U.S. soldiers and seven employees of Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root have been missing since their convoy was attacked Friday on the main highway west of Baghdad, between the district of Abu Ghraib and the central city of Fallujah.

Republicans Walk Out Of Federal Hearing On Voting Machines
As the battle over voting machines rages across the country, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights met on Friday, April 9th, to examine the Integrity, Security and Accessibility in the Nation's Readiness to Vote". Two scientists and four representatives of civil rights organizations were invited to brief the Commission.

But, before the panelists had a chance to share their views, three Republican commissioners and one (notably conservative) Independent commissioner walked out, ostensibly over a personnel dispute. But, others are not so sure.

It appears that voting technology is a topic that the Republican leadership wants to tightly control. It is without doubt that Republicans own most of the companies that manufacture, sell, and service voting machines. And President Bush and the Republican Congress appear determined to control and limit oversight of the elections industry.

Carlyle Group Meets in Portugal to Sell Arms, Infrastructure in Iraq
Directors of The Carlyle Group - one of the world's largest armament companies which is heavily involved in arms supplies to the Coalition forces occupying Iraq - are planning on meeting in Lisbon in three weeks time.

The Group is managed by a team of former US Government personnel including its president Frank Carlucci, former deputy director of the CIA before becoming Defense Secretary. His deputy is James Baker II, who was Secretary of State under George Bush senior. Several high profile former politicians are employed to represent the company overseas, among them John Major, former British Prime Minister, along with George Bush senior, one time CIA director before becoming US President.

The financial assets of the Saudi Binladen Corporation (SBC) are also managed by the Carlyle Group. The SBC is headed up by members of Osama bin Laden's family, who played a principal role in helping George W. Bush win petroleum concessions from Bahrain when he was head of the Texan oil company, Harken Energy Corporation - a deal that was to make the Bush family millions of dollars. Salem, Osama bin Laden's brother, was represented on Harken's board of directors by his American agent, James R. Bath.

The connection between the Bush and bin Laden families can also be traced to the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) in the 1990s.
