Clarke Challenges Rice To Reveal Secret Emails
In a riveting television performance, Richard Clarke called on his principal critic and former employer, the national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, to release the entire record of their emails in the months up to the September 11 terror attacks to prove his contention that the White House did not then take the threat of al-Qaida seriously.

He also agreed to Republican demands to declassify testimony he gave to the Senate two years ago - to "prove" there were no inconsistencies. "Let's take all of my emails and all the memos I sent to the national security adviser and her deputy from January 20 to September 11 and let's declassify all of them," Mr Clarke told NBC television.

Mr Clarke's bravura presentation surprised the Bush administration. The decision to stand his ground could also be destructive to Ms Rice.

indymedia readers investigate PDX Police officer Jason Sery, killer of James Jahar Perez
When we look around at all the problems in the world -- imperialism, racism, environmental destruction, etc., -- we can feel hopeless. These issues are huge, and are the methods and results of a tiny class of wealthy people who dominate the vast majority of the rest of us. How can we fight back? One of the best ways is by taking on the corporate media, which is nothing less than the propaganda arm of the ruling elite. Factually, the corporate media lies and leaves out the important parts; Psychically, they define the world within a narrow framework of disempowerment -- in which everyday people are helpless to change anything (but can choose among dozens of colors of cellphone faceplates) -- and in so doing, cause the feelings of hopelessness we have about the state of the world. Corporate media incarcerates us inside our own skulls; fortunately, we can break out at any time if we so will it.

indymedia readers showed how open publishing can be used to challenge the corporate media model and create a more effective community resource, when they researched Jason Sery, the PDX Police officer who killed James Jahar Perez, and posted their findings to this site.

i love portland imc and the imc org. i wish there was a way to shut people up who just want to vent a particular frustration, force them to study writing as a convention and means of communication - and let them write till their hearts content.

lets be considerate - in the sense that people want to read your message, put some time into it - make it readable. i am tired of wordiness in largely irrational venting.

U.S. Wants Suit on Anthrax Probe Tossed
Government lawyers on Monday contended that Attorney General John Ashcroft named Dr. Steven J. Hatfill a ``person of interest'' in the 2001 anthrax attacks to dampen speculation that the bioterrorism expert was a suspect.

Deputy Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Bucholtz said ``it's clear the attorney general was trying to downplay'' federal investigators' suspicions that Hatfill sent anthrax-laced envelopes to government and media offices in October 2001.

Hatfill lawyer Mark A. Grannis scoffed at the idea the government was trying to help his client.

``Mr. Ashcroft acted to protect both the department and his own political image at the expense of Dr. Hatfill's constitutional rights,'' Grannis said at a hearing on the government's request that U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton throw out Hatfill's suit against Ashcroft and other government officials.

Hatfill claims the officials named him to deflect attention from their inability to find whoever was responsible for the attacks, which killed five people and sickened 17 others. He still is the only publicly named ``person of interest'' in the case.

The 213 Things Skippy is No Longer Allowed to Do in the U.S. Army
Once upon a time, there was a SPC Schwarz stationed with the Army in the Balkans. SPC Schwarz was either very clever or very bored; but probably both, since he managed to attempt or be warned about 213 things he wasn't allowed to do. He collected those things into a hillarious list and posted them to the web. The site hadn't been updated in a couple of years and has since gone away; but the list is classic, so I saved it. A couple favorites: 2. My proper military title is 'Specialist Schwarz' not 'Princess Anastasia'. and 191. Our Humvees cannot be assembled into a giant battle-robot.

The Politics of Truth - Joseph Wilson And worse is to come. In a few months former diplomat Joseph Wilson, will publish his book, an account of the build-up to the war in Iraq, called The Politics of Truth. Wilson last summer accused the White House of ignoring evidence in its efforts to show Iraq had WMD. The White House responded by leaking the identity of Wilson's wife, an undercover CIA operative.

That scandal led to a criminal investigation of White House staff, which is still ongoing. Richard Clarke's book is just be the start of a long summer of revelations.

South Korea Headed For Military Coup?
a) South Korea is at extreme risk of a military coup--from either hardline anti-Pyongyong, anti-communist military forces; or by military and civilian supporters of impeached President Roh Moo-hyun. South Korea is no stranger to military juntas and civilian uprisings.

b) South Korea is also at risk of a sudden invasion from the North. With America's military might spread out in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is very possible that the U.S. will not have the power or wherewithal to protect South Korea from a communist invasion (North Korea/China/Russia).
