Staring at the heads bent down in a circle, I saw the police move in on them hitting with batons, attacking with tear gas. Their bodies shaking they held each other embraced. Refusing to move. Tears filled the eyes of fleeing people, those who refused to move, across the globe children were dying. Screams. Later they paid this country to beat them, resisting war.

Painted With the Skin of Sky
"It has been an astonishing transformation, of the utmost significance. But we never, ever, hear or read about it in the news. Over the last few years, the skies over the American southwest have changed beyond recognition. The famous dazzling blue sky of yesteryear has become, as often as not, sickly pale ugly sludge. This is as shocking a difference as if the surrounding landscape had slowly turned black, while the human inhabitants remained bizarrely oblivious."

Judge Rules Against Tribe and Environmentalist at Medicine Lake
A federal judge ruled last week on the first of series of lawsuits filed by the tribal and environmental groups for Medicine Lake. For the first power plant, the judge ruled against the people and for Calpine, an energy giant with a bad corporate history. All the land in question is public Forest Service land that is sacred to many local tribes and is very ecologically important. Calpine hold leases for over 130,000 of these lands without having consulted the public, however currently over 50 million dollars of public money is going to Calpine to turn public lands into a wasteland. In Humboldt County the public just beat Calpine development and there are many important things coming up we can do to save Medicine Lake.

Today, those designated as non-Hispanic whites in the US constitute about 69 per cent of the population. Hence, everyone else by default belongs to an ethnic minority. But according to these latest Census Bureau figures, their share will fall to 50.1 per cent in 2050.

At the same time, the US is set to become considerably more grey. By 2050, 5 per cent of the country will be 85 or older, compared with 1.5 per cent now. And 21 per cent of the country will be 65 or older, compared with 12 per cent today.

US Gunfire Increases Toll of Arab Journalists

BAGHDAD (IHT 03-19)
A reporter for the Arab satellite television station Al Arabiya died from his wounds Friday after U.S. soldiers shot him hours earlier along with a cameraman, who died at the scene. The death brought to five the number of journalists killed in Iraq in less than 24 hours.
"There are so many things that are untrue that are being reported by irresponsible journalists and ... television stations, particularly like al-Jazeera and al-Arabia," he said, adding that the Iraqi people are being given an unbalanced picture "of what is happening in their country."

Coming of Age in America
Remember that phony list of the "top school problems" of 1940 ("talking, chewing gum, making noise, running in halls, getting out of turn, wearing improper clothing, not putting paper in wastebaskets") versus today's ("drug abuse, alcohol abuse, pregnancy, suicide, rape, robbery, assault") that circulated widely in the 1990s?

Big-time experts - including Yale University President Derek Bok, Education Secretary William Bennett, U.S. Sen. John Glenn, acclaimed juvenile justice author Ed Humes and institutional heavyweights of every stripe - were not only fooled by this ridiculous scam uncorroborated by any serious study of school problems. They embellished it with new horrors concocted out of thin air. It became "the most quoted 'results' of educational research, and possibly the most influential," lamented a New York Times Magazine report exposing the list as a hoax cooked up by right-wing zealots.
