Truth can be stranger, and funnier, than fiction. See how Americans have been kept away from the SUVs they deserve in this fun new cartoon.
The United States is shouldering a greater debt burden today than it did during the Great Depression.
The total amount owed - by consumers, businesses, governments and financial institutions - totaled $34.4 trillion at the end of 2003, according to the Federal Reserve. The economy produced $11.3 trillion of output. That makes the nation's debt triple its gross domestic product. In 1933, debt was about 2 1/2 times GDP, according to a study by the Gabelli Mathers mutual fund.

The Bush Administration is now saying it never told the public that Iraq was an "imminent" threat, and therefore it should be absolved for overstating the case for war and misleading the American people about Iraq's WMD. Just this week, White House spokesman Scott McClellan lashed out at critics saying "Some in the media have chosen to use the word 'imminent'. Those were not words we used." But a closer look at the record shows that McClellan himself and others did use the phrase "imminent threat" - while also using the synonymous phrases "mortal threat," "urgent threat," "immediate threat", "serious and mounting threat", "unique threat," and claiming that Iraq was actively seeking to "strike the United States with weapons of mass destruction" - all just months after Secretary of State Colin Powell admitted that Iraq was "contained" and "threatens not the United States." While Iraq was certainly a dangerous country, the Administration's efforts to claim it never hyped the threat in the lead-up to war is belied by its statements.
The GOP has tried relentlessly to throw the blame at Clinton, but on Tuesday, the game took a bizarre new turn. According to an editorial in the New York Post, John Kerry is to blame for the attacks of September 11. Yes, you read that right. John Kerry did it.

There has been too much good news for the good guys this week. Remember what happens when the good guys start getting too many points on our side: the devils in the White House/Langley/boardrooms punish us with one of their more virulently violent reactions. We have to be prepared for some really outlandish freaky nasty move from them soon and no later than the anniversary of Hitler's birthday in one month (because of the admiration they have for him from Bush on down).
The people are still not convinced that they are the only ones that matter. The pundits, the commentators, the analysts, the liberals, the rich the fascists are all united for once in their lives - everyone fears Nader because his support is growing. The polls are trying to lie but they can't eliminate him because too many people know statistics. Now what do we do??!!??

As March 20 fast approaches, politicos are trying to dope out what the effect will be on whatever is left of the primary elections --- and that includes all of the Oregon primary on May 18 --- and also on the effect of what may become a season of activism that is only beginning with the March 20 protests. In that context, I went around the web sites to find out, with varying success, WHERE THE CANDIDATES STAND ON THE ISSUE OF IRAQ. One of the biggest strikes in world history took place 3 weeks ago in India, but the U.S. media chose to ignore it! (I just found out about it today). Briefly, India's supreme court had ruled that it was illegal for government workers to strike, so in order to protest the ruling and pressure the government: the workers--went on strike!

At the moment, the largest campus-based socialist organization in the United States is the International Socialist Organization, with eight hundred or so members. Over the last few years, the ISO has been successful in recruiting hundreds of students, and has played a significant role (or has at least been noticeably present) in the struggles against the sanctions on and bombing of Iraq, to end the death penalty, and to save the life of Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Aznar's Popular Party (being the haven of the Franco fascists just as the Christian Democrats in Germany became the haven of Nazis after World War Two) more than likely contracted the men arrested through their handlers (the Bush regime) to plant the bombs that went off Thursday in Spain in an attempt to shift a weakening or possible loss for the Popular Party in the Spanish parliament to resounding victory for the Popular Party by blaming the attacks on the militant Basque separatists, the ETA.

In the early 1980s, Mark Dayton ran for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota. He spent so much of his own money, about $8 million, that it shocked people, and he was defeated.
Voters in Minnesota comfortable with Don Frazer, Hubert Humphrey and Gene McCarthy running on a shoestring were not going to permit anyone to buy a Senate seat. Today Dayton is a U.S. senator, and no one cares how much money he spent to get there. John Corzine, a Democratic senator from New Jersey, spent $59 million of his own money to capture a job that pays about $160,000 annually. In Illinois, five multimillionaires are competing to fill that state's open seat. And we have millionaire Republicans hoping to join multimillionaire Herb Kohl as our U.S. senator from Wisconsin.

![]() Spain's incoming Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has attacked the US invasion of Iraq and has rapidly shifted the country's strategic alliance from the United States to the so-called "Old Europe" countries of France and Germany, in a move that will undermine Washington's influence in Europe. Two hours before the polls closed in Madrid, Condoleezza Rice, Mr Bush's national security adviser, was on network television proclaiming her belief that "the Spanish people understand that they've had strong and good leadership in José Maria Aznar and his government". Not only was that view quickly and harshly contradicted by the election result; so too was the Bush administration's assumption that a major terrorist attack in Europe would draw sceptical populations closer to Washington. In Spain, the opposite appears to have happened.
