Bedtime for Democracy
People need to be ready. No matter what the courts decide regarding the issuance of permits and the like, there will be protests in Boston and New York. Boston must see protests because the Democrats should not be let off the hook just because they aren't Bush. The reasons for protests in New York do not even to be outlined. We should not let the authorities scare us away by using the courts against us. Nor should we allow their threats of chaos and disorder keep us away. Indeed, history makes it only too clear that it is the police and their bosses that create chaos and disorder, not the protestors. After the Chicago police were televised attacking and beating protestors outside the Democratic convention in August 1968, Mayor Daley (the elder) was quoted, "The police are not here to create disorder. The police are here to preserve disorder." Whether he meant to say this or not, its veracity remains. See you there.

Him Again? Al Gore Needs to Move On!
I have received many responses to my February 26 CounterPunch article. Most were from people who agreed with Ralph Nader's decision to run. But some, of course, were from those not happy with Nader and who wanted to argue the 2000 election results with me (no thanks). After I told one e-mailer that Gore did win the election and would be in the White House were it not for the racist actions of Katherine Harris and Jeb Bush, he responded back with: but "despite the election tampering" and went on to blame Nader for being in the race. I hit my delete key.

There is something deeply troubling about the fact that it seems like many progressives in this country have followed in the path of the Democratic Party and US corporate media in their forgetting about the revival of Jim Crow in Florida; it seems that beating up on Ralph Nader gives progressives this sort of amnesia. There is no "despite the election tampering!" We should know better.

French Charge 62 Activists Over War on 'Brainless Ads'
Drawing moustaches or writing rude words on advertisements used to be a by-product of boredom or wanton destructiveness. In Paris, defacing ads on the Metro has become a trendy political movement, bringing together the far left, anti-globalizers, radical Catholics and feminists.

Yesterday 62 of them landed in court, accused of vandalism and damaging the image and advertising revenues of the Paris transport authority, the RATP.

The trial, the first of its kind, followed a mass arrest of "anti-pub" (short for publicitÚ or advertising) campaigners when they gathered at a Metro station in eastern Paris in December.

War Games: America's Media Leads the Charge
It's really not fair to dignify the reporting in America's papers of record as "journalism", most of that appears to happening by serious writers "eking by" outside the mainstream. The world of conventional journalism has deteriorated into a "knocking shop" for writers who don't mind slipping into "the spiked heels and fishnets" for a fat check at the end of each month.

They are every bit as responsible for the bloodletting in Afghanistan, Iraq and Haiti as anyone sitting in the Pentagon War Room.

Kerry and Me
Simply put, Senator Kerry can't have it both ways. He can't, on the one hand, tout his foreign policy expertise, political savvy and experience, and on the other hand be so callow as to claim to have been deceived by the Bush gang into voting for the war. He's either alarmingly, unforgivably na´ve after so many years in Washington, or, more likely, he voted for the war in a crass political calculation that it would help him look tough as he prepared his presidential bid. Either answer is extremely troubling for those looking for a savior from Bush's reign of error.

House 'Cheeseburger Bill' - Trash Food Makers Fatten GOP Coffers
We're just too darned fat, ladies and gentlemen, and we're going to do something about it," Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said.

Even as Thompson spoke, the pharaohs were on Capitol Hill, sitting in glee as the House voted, 276-139, to ban lawsuits against trash-food companies. The bill's sponsor, Republican Ric Keller of Florida, said, "The food industry is under attack and in the cross hairs of the same trial lawyers who went after big tobacco."

Unsaid was that Keller and his fellow Republicans were in the cross hairs of the food industry. Among Keller's current top five political contributors are the corporation that runs the Olive Garden and Red Lobster chains, Outback Steakhouse, and Disney (and we all know how healthy the food is at Disney World).

From 1995 to 2002, according to Common Cause, food and grocery companies and restaurants gave more than $19.3 million in soft money to Republican causes compared with $5.5 million for Democrats.

You probably never knew that doughnuts were a peculiarly Republican trash food. But in the current election cycle, Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme have both given 100 percent of their money to Republicans.

Thompson is right. The nation is too darned fat. Thompson's political allies are also too fat in the wallet from the companies making us fat. Until that changes, his decree is just a hydrogenated photo op. All fat. No meat. And definitely no fruit or vegetables.

Dissecting the Electable Mr. Kerry
It is hard to pin down John Kerry. You can slice and dice all his positions. You can lay them down on the table and compare them (inch by inch) with the notorious and hated wartime president.

But that approach doesn't get to the heart of the matter--which is that people are told to think that only two things really (supposedly) matter:

First, John Kerry is not George W. Bush.

And, second, John Kerry is electable, meaning he can (potentially, conceivably) beat George W. Bush.

And for some people, those two points settle everything. They have convinced themselves that it doesn't really matter if Kerry even agrees with them on important matters. They want the policies of Bush gone, gone, gone--and believe this can only mean getting themselves (and everyone else) to want Kerry in, in, in.

Let's get into why this logic is so dangerous and what this John Kerry campaign really represents-- starting with why he is considered "electable."

Spain's 3/11 and USA's 9/11: Is this Too Obvious?
Regarding yesterday's terror attack in Spain, does anyone find it very suspicious that the date of this attack, 3/11, resonates with 9/11 and that it happened 911 days after the WTC attacks on Sept. 11? Or the fact that the Spanish authorities claim to have found an audio tape with Arabic sayings from the Koran--just like the USA found Mohammed's Atta's Magical Passport in the rubble of the Twin Towers? Come on now, how blatant can you get? Was this a real "terrorist" attack or yet another government staged fake "terror" incident like 9/11? Anyway, here is a good article on the issue.
