American forces in Afghanistan have been accused of flouting international law with arbitrary arrests, torture and killing of prisoners in a report by Humand Rights Watch.
Soldiers are accused of using unprovoked deadly force in capturing civilians, some of whom were then allegedly subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment leading to deaths in custody. It is also alleged that looting has taken place during searches of homes. The report says the situation at Guantanamo Bay is being replicated many times in Afghanistan, with detainees being held in even worse conditions at the military bases of Bagram, Kandahar, Jalalabad and Asadabad.
![]() "[For] most people, even if they plug their ears, [the device] will produce the equivalent of an instant migraine," says Woody Norris, chairman of American Technology Corp., the San Diego firm that produces the weapon. "It will knock [some people] on their knees." The new megaphone being deployed to Iraq can operate at 145 decibels at 300 yards, according to American Technology, well above the normal threshold for pain. The company posits a scenario in which Al Qaeda terrorists would run screaming from caves after being subjected to a blast of high-decibel sound from the devices, their hands covering their ears. But in Baghdad or other Iraqi towns, where there are crowds and buildings, the sick and elderly, as well as children, are likely to be in the weapon's range.
"The number of jobs in the US has fallen three million since the Texan assumed command. The president obviously doesn't want to admit that the Bush philosophy based on tax cuts for the rich doesn't work. Cheating, cronyism and incompetence mark the policy of the White House.."
What makes a good or bad teacher? I think teachers who only offer the obvious, asking for rote regurgitation of facts and dates, turn students off to learning...with quality instruction, you can give students a passion for learning, instead of a repulsion at authoritarian education...

Maurice, Victor, Steve, and Rob are just a few of the thousands of GI's returning from Iraq -- often with one or more limbs amputated, flown in with little notice under the cover of night and brought to Walter Reed military Hospital in Washington, D.C. Here, they're operated on, treated, fitted with prosthetics when possible, generally medicated, and given psychological and physical therapy. For the record, Walter Reed is the hospital where wounded soldiers returning from Vietnam went. No fanfare for these heroes. On top of the injuries they've had to endure to their bodies and hearts, they come home to be ignored by mainstream American media.
"They come here [to Walter Reed Hospital]19 or 20 old and when I see them leaving with missing limbs - I've seen up to 3 limbs gone off people and I don't think in our generation, we've seen this amount of harm done to young people", explained Major General Delaune on public radio in Minnesota. "During the Gulf War, there were about 3 soldiers wounded for every death. In the current Iraq war, there are 7 wounded for every death", says an article titled "New Technologies and Medical Practices Save Lives in Iraq" in a Knight-Ridder newspaper. The facts support this statement: the Kevlar vests the soldiers now wear save lives, not limbs. England's newspaper The Guardian reports that the medical personnel, overwhelmed, work 70-80 hours a week, and according to CBS, Washington's largest military hospital has had to borrow beds from its cancer ward to meet the swollen needs of its prosthetics ward. Still the hospital can't handle the load, and several wounded soldiers are being put up in a nearby hotel.
![]() No, today we're dealing with Pop's brother, William, uncle of the current president. William Bush is a director of Engineered Support Systems Inc. (ESSI), a supplier of high-tech military goods to--well, to the highest bidder. Just last year they sold $13 million worth of advanced radar gear to upgrade Communist China's fleet of fighter jets--you know, the kind that force down U.S. spy planes with such aplomb. This is just par for the family course, however; William's brother, Prescott Jr., is head of the America-China Chamber of Commerce, while Pretzel's brother Neil is in bed with the son of former Communist chieftain Jiang Zemin.
![]() "We're just too fat," Health Secretary Tommy Thompson said at the unveiling of the study. It found that poor diet and lack of exercise caused 400,000 deaths in the US in the year 2000. That figure represents a 33% jump since 1990. If current trends continue, then obesity will shortly overtake smoking as the single biggest cause of preventable deaths in the United States.

We are posting the first threats to harass DeVoy which were posted by an FBI agent in 2002. Do not delete these as we are preserving the evidence by posting it here.
These threats can be traced to the FBI and they indicated exactly what they intend to do to DeVoy. They then followed through, but with libel and defamation, by creating the KOBEHQ website.

The future of the Seven Corners area of Southeast Portland was once more the center of discussion and contention tonight, at a meeting between the Hosford-Abernathy Neighborhood Association (HAND) and the "Opal Corporation", which is made up of four individuals who want to open a bar called "the Night Light Lounge" at 21st & Clinton. Just around the corner from the new New Seasons, and down the street from the planned Starbucks, this establishment is one more example of how quickly Seven Corners is changing these days, and how little (if any) power that neighborhood residents have over what happens in the places they live.
The subject of tonight's meeting, which was facilitated by Eric, a man from the city's office of neighborhood involvement, was a "Good Neighbor Agreement" that Opal has been discussing with HAND over the course of several meetings. HAND has already come out in opposition to Opal's application to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC). The application is for a "limited on-premise license" for beer, wine, malt beverages and cider that would let the Night Light sell those alcoholic beverages until 2:30am, the latest time allowed by Oregon State Law. It's my understanding that Opal wants to stay open that late in order to cater to the twenty- and thirty-somethings around town who work at other bars and restaurants and want someplace to go after work. HAND has offered to withdraw its opposition to the OLCC license if a Good Neighbor Agreement is signed. By the end of the meeting, however, no agreement had been reached, but a lot was revealed about the state of The System.

.. why didn't the Chairman recall the projections by the Social Security trustees who tell us that the retirement fund is solid until 2042 without any changes or benefit cuts, based on an average GDP growth rate of 1.7 percent annually? The latter figure is very conservative. For the past 50 years the average GDP growth rate has been well over three percent.

Today's Snoregonion had a little article about a police officer shooting himself in the leg. Their words were something along the lines of "his gun discharged in the office" Gosh, that must have caused quite a scare.
Breaking news here- firearms tend to make holes in people and things. Usually this is not a good thing. I've always held the belief that most cops should not carry handguns. Put a good rifle or shotgun in the car, only get it out when theres a good chance they need it. Most any rifle or shotgun is a much "better" weapon than any pistol. Certainly they shouldn't be carrying those silly semi-automatics. A 38 special is more than adequete. Officers who really feel like they need a surrogate penis could apply for permission to carry a 357 for awesome noise and the ability to shoot thru telephone poles, engine blocks, and concrete block walls.

![]() Widespread release of this report would have triggered a congressionally mandated cutoff of aid to the country, a key ally in the CIA's efforts to support Afghan rebels fighting a pro-Soviet government. It also would have killed a $1.4-billion sale of F-16 fighter jets to Islamabad. Cheney dismissed Barlow's report because he desperately wanted to sell Pakistan the F-16 fighter planes. Several months later, a Pentagon official was told by Cheney to downplay Pakistan's nuclear capabilities when he testified on the threat before Congress. Barlow complained to his bosses at the Pentagon and was fired. Ironically, Pakistan, critics say, was let off the hook last month so the U.S. could use its borders to hunt for al-Qaeda leader and 9-11 mastermind Osama bin Laden.

Maybe you're a dedicated revolutionary, so you'll vote for Bush to "bring 'em on!" But if you are a working person, you might want to consider the reality that you may actually have a choice in the 2004 presidential election ! ! Maybe not as much of a choice as you would like, but a choice all the same affecting your future. Columnist for the London Sunday Times (quoted in part below) makes the point.
A vote for Bush is a vote for Bush

Outsourcing: sounds so harmless, doesn't it? A somewhat vague and professional buzzword, like "synergy" or "knowledge transfer": something that doesn't have any real impact or meaning. Well, outsourcing is the theft and destruction of American jobs and we've got to wake up and fight it NOW.

When I was younger, I was very interested in the 1960's. The vietname war, the music, the movies, the art, the protests. The love, all of that stuff makes a young person think that change is possible that another world is possible it made me beleive that we could win. I wondered whatever happened to the people that were protesting war in the 60's and actively pushing for change in this country and the world.
I found out that those people went underground, were jailed, were outright murdered, were duped back into society, etc etc etc. There is the Weather Undergroud, active force of revolution springing for Students for a Democratic Society. There was the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, the Yippies, numerous names that are no longer remembered of community based/student organizations. These are gone now. Why?

Very interesting piece on a company in B.C.
