The Women of the Black Caucus
This is a letter to the women in the Black Caucus because their courage might yet provide us with a time to retrace and undo our sinful evil ways in Haiti. What the US has done there is a sin of such grievous magnitude, it is a assuming such a heavy karmic debt before the world and the continent of the Americas, that we will be paying and regretting it for generations to come. We have, in suicidal fashion, brought to our continental shores the genocidal psychopathic madness we unleashed upon a stunned world in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Same-Sex Marriage Sweeps the County
Yesterday, Multonomah County sold nearly 300 marriage licenses to same-sex couples. It was the first day that same-sex couples were allowed to buy the licenses which cost $60 each. The Oregon Constitution does not define criteria for marriage outside of age. Lawyers found that it would be unlawful for the County to not issue the licenses since the constitution allows this. County Commissioner Lisa Naito said: "Multnomah County cannot deny marriage licenses to Gay or Lesbian Couples. We will not allow discrimination to continue when the Constitution of the State of Oregon grants privileges equally to all citizens."

Part of the County Attorney's opinion reads, "Refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples violates Article 1, Section 20, of the Oregon Constitution... Multnomah County is required to act in accordance with the Constitution." Finding that not issuing marrriage licenses violates the State Constitution, county commissioners asked that the rest of the state follow suit and allow same-sex marriages. In Medford, people rallied in support of this, and asked for licenses to be issued in Jackson County as well. Medford Rally and March VIDEO

are you swallowing it? Yet if you're listening to NPR or watching tv, you'd think it was all over. Yes, Kerry has 1500+ of the 2162 he needs to secure the nomination... yet you are being told that he has already won. In fact, you were told he won before Super Tuesday with many headlines on Kerry's inevitable victory. Does anyone ever question why? Why is our democracy supposedly decided when all of the people have not spoken? Is the media working for you... are they reporting the news... or are they making the news and telling you how it's going to be?

VerfiedVoting.org: Last Chance for a Fair Election
FAIR ELECTIONS MIGHT BE POSSIBLE IN 2004, AFTER ALL

Our best, and possibly only, opportunity to require a voter-verifiable paper trail for electronic voting everywhere in the U.S. for the November 2004 election is "The Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act of 2003." The House version (H.R. 2239) was introduced in May by Rep. Rush Holt. The Senate version (S. 1980) was introduced in December by Senator Bob Graham.

VerifiedVoting.org is in the midst of a campaign to contact every Senator as many times as possible to let them know how much we care about passing this bill. We have heard that the House bill may not move until the Senators are clear on which of the three voting bills (Clinton's S.1986, Boxer's S.2045, or Graham's S.1980) is gaining the most support.

It is important that GRAHAM's bill emerge as the obvious choice, or it is unlikely that we will have a paper trail by this election.

PLEASE take a moment to use the 1-800-839-5276 number and:

1) Call your Senator and ask their position on S. 1980. Tell them you support it, and ask them to co-sponsor.

2) Report the results of your calls to  pass2239@verifiedvoting.org so they can update the data about the legislators.

Also: post this notice on any other blogs you go to.

If you need information on the voting issue or the bills go to  http://www.verifiedvoting.org.

Attacks from 'war president' are unrelenting -- time to return fire
Like it or not, the president who came in promising to unite us has created, in only three short years, the most polarized and the most bitterly politically divided country since Reconstruction. His team has created more anti-American hatred around the globe than has ever previously existed in history. Those same political strategists have shown that they will stop at virtually nothing to gain and exercise power, and will do so almost exclusively to enrich their hyperwealthy friends and feed their warped ideological crusades -- crusades that, if presented honestly, would be rejected by the vast majority of their countrypersons and the rest of the world.

The role of international financial institutions in the destabilization of Haiti

Here's part of the recipe for destabilization and devastation which was applied to Haiti, concentrating on the role played by the IMF and other international financial institutions as willing accomplices to the exploitation of the nation at the hands of international capital and to the political destabilization accomplished through economic siege.

  1. Destroy any hope of self-sufficiency by forcing Structural Adjustment Programs on Haiti which predicate loans on the facilitation of foreign trade and investment. Some call it "liberalization", but a better term might be "pillage".
  2. Count on convenient military coup to overthrow populist reformer Aristide overwhelmingly elected to the presidency, who might challenge IMF "wisdom".
  3. Have this deposed president reinstated, suitably chastised and constrained to follow IMF dictates on trade policy.
  4. After the SAP's have been implemented with all their disastrous consequences, pull the rug out from under Haiti by withholding hundreds of millions of dollars of promised funds because the Bush administration claims that Aristide's government is in power because of voting irregularities.
  5. Have another coup, securing an even friendlier climate for business and capital.

Perhaps the above sounds a little oversimplified. If you want the details to make your own judgement on the antidemocratic and callous activities of the IMF/WB in Haiti , here's the whole story in excerpts from other media, independent and otherwise:

Reasons for Marriage Equality
Marriage equality would build on America's tradition of moving civil rights forward and erasing the inequities of the past. More than 10 nations already allow same-sex couples to get married or to enter federally recognized domestic partnerships. What's more, the fact that excluding same-sex couples from marriage has a long history in this country doesn't necessarily mean that this policy is in keeping with American values. The real tradition in this country has been to pass laws to safeguard the American people and to expand laws where they leave citizens unprotected, as well as done for voting rights and work place protections. It is also an American tradition to abandon discriminatory laws, even if they are popular - as were bans on interracial marriage and Jim Crow laws segregated the races in everyday life.

The entire No, there is nothing wrong with this graph. The debt owed by United States of America is about to spiral out of control, and there's really nothing anyone can do about it. Alan Greenspan has just warned lawmakers that the Social Security system, which currently enjoys a budget surplus that it donates to the country's general fund, will become over subscribed and begin operating in the red by the year 2008. So the influence of the Social Security surplus won't even help for much longer.
