I have been following the 'peak oil' debate currently taking place on a number of Indy sites, and I have been interested in studying the papers and reports written by the debunkers and critics of 'peak oil'. What I have found reminds me of the debunkers of global warming (bad arguments, not to hard to question or even refute). My criticisms of these critics follow below...

Neoliberals sometimes claim that destruction of resources creates jobs. The truth is that conservation creates far more long-term jobs. Accepting and acknowledging the taboos and errors in neoliberalism is vital in envisioning future friendliness, an alternative to the increasing unemployment, inequality and destruction.
America's extreme environmental activists are becoming more and more brazen. One green group, the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), has caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage with arsonist attacks and violent vandalism.

The absolute last vvestige of hope for even a semblance of democracy and, therefore for America as we were led to believe it was, just died with Dean's resignation from the presidential race. There is nothing that can be said as a palliative to this fact: the only option remaining for the few who will not sell themselves like prostitutes is revolution.
Over 30 community members attended the DivisionVision meeting held at the Red and Black Cafe Monday night to develop a planning strategy for the Division Street business corridor. A lot of energy and discussion was put into community land trusts and local development corporations. This was largely due to the groundswell of opposition around the planned Starbucks (and possibly Subway) currently under construction at SE 20th and Division St. There was general agreement that the community needs to plan in advance of economic development so that self-serving developers cannot make economic choices counter to the will local communities. It is clear that time is of the essence in the proceedings.

Dr. Hanan Ashrawi is a Palestinian academic and politician. This poem is typical of her work posted on the internet, pretty good but not great, and unabashedly polemic. I sometimes wonder, what could she write had she not so heavy a responsibility. Rise up!
A heartbreaking documentary that upsets your expectations of happily-ever-afters, Daughter from Danang is a riveting emotional drama of longing, identity, and the personal legacy of war. To all outward appearances, Heidi is the proverbial "all-American girl", hailing from small town Pulaski, Tenn. But her birth name was Mai Thi Hiep. Born in Danang, Vietnam in 1968, she's the mixed-race daughter of an American serviceman and a Vietnamese woman....

Dodging the draft will be more difficult than those from the Vietnam era remember. College and Canada will not be options. In December 2001, Canada and the US signed a "Smart Border Declaration," which could be used to
keep would-be draft dodgers in. ... the declaration involves a 30-point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.
![]() . . . To address these needs, Rumsfeld requested that spending be increased by between $255 billion and $842 billion over the next five years. To comprehend the audacity of Rumsfeld's request, recall that defense spending since 2001, after two wars, has increased by around $150 billion. Obviously, Rumsfeld may have been putting in large requests as a bargaining tactic, and Suskind does not tell us what happened to his request or what Bush's reaction to it was. This account makes painfully clear, however, that Rumsfeld had dispensed completely with the idea of a "peace dividend." . . .Rumsfeld was somehow prescient to request this sort of money before 9/11. . . memo does not focus on terrorism but on hostile states that may gain access to weapons of mass destruction . . .[NOTE: Rumsfeld was the one to parcel out these 'WMDs' to North Korea under Clinton, because Rummy was CEO of the nuclear construction company ABB that got the Clinton contract. Both Rummy and the other CEO head are Bilderbergers. Seed your enemies, then reap the military empire attempting to snuff them out?]

With the defeat of Measure 30 here in Oregon, Citizens for a Sound Economy, which claims credit on it's web site www.cse.org for blocking tax measures in Alabama and Oregon, moves on to Washington State and Governor Locke's proposal for a tax increase. As one of those who voted for the defeated Measure 30, I wonder, who are these anti-tax campaigners from Washington D.C.??

This is a great site. I know that I have featured this site before but it rules! I am getting ready to go to the art museum and the sun is shining, my cat is snoring, the birds are singing, I got my comfy pants on, and people are dying from "occupupation" how dare you call it war? The embedded reported asked me. Why do you keep saying Vietnam was an occupation? I ask.

Private expropriation of the commons forces the mortgaging of our culture to financial interests, and corrodes the public interest obligations inherent in administering these commons. FBI Joint Terrorist Task Force operatives subpoenaed Drake University and the Des Moines chapter of the National Lawyers Guild for membership and attendance lists of people present at a university-sponsored conference on antiwar activism and related legal issues. After receiving unwanted publicity and facing a motion to quash the subpoenas, the officials have backed down and withdrawn them before a judge could rule on their requests.

According to two collective members of worker-owned businesses in SE Portland, rented vans (without logos for Qwest or any other corporation) were seeing fooling around with the phone lines outside the Red and Black Cafe, People's Food Co-op and a residence belonging to Portland Collective Housing. It seemed suspicious to one of the witnesses that the vans were in front of these three collectives at the same time. This report has been posted here to indymedia so that if the phone lines were indeed being tapped, that they will now know that we know!

Want to be sure your vote is counted? Might consider the following this November when you cast your vote on one of those machines.
Backers of a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage have
created a misleading impression of their legislative plan-- a deception that some media outlets have not properly explained to readers and viewers.
Between 1979 and 1995, the salary of the median American worker had actually dropped 4.6 percent, from $25,896 to $24,700.
But, during the same period the top 1 percent of U.S. families had an increase in income of 78 percent. The American wage gap between a typical CEO and a typical worker had grown from 40 times to 190 times. The differential is now over 500 times. The gap grows every year, and now it is nourished by a changed taxation philosophy. Since the 1930s, America has had a tax structure designed to keep a strong middle class by distributing enormous wealth made at the top of society to public works that benefit all. Now, with every tax cut, the rich-poor gap widens.
