Wal$Mart, or: The Super-Scourge
In just the last six months, the Portland Metro Area has witnessed an on-going worker strike at Powell's book store and on-going solidarity pickets of Safeway stores. These are over worker benefits, immigrant rights, and working conditions. There is an underlying force to these actions, the super-conglomerate-corporate-monster Wal$Mart.

Wal$Mart has been rapidly expanding its market reach and potential all across the board. This is especially prevalent with the "wal$mart super stores" that also have grocery outlets housed inside. Wal$Mart is the largest employer in the US, and the number one corporation ont he Fortune 500 list. Because a super corporation is taking these leaps in the market, it is stressing smaller corporations, independant businesses, and especially workers unions.

Currently, there are rumours that Wal$Mart is moving into an old Albertsons store on McCloughlin Blvd. There are ongoing a class action lawsuit against walmart on behalf of womyn employees, a Planned Parenthood boycott, and a generral boycott call from "Boycott International". There is even an animal rights against Wal$Mart.

Report-back from anti-Starbucks action this lovely morn
we <3 local businesses! Today is the third anniversary of my first full day in Portland, and I thought to myself, "What better way to start it than by protesting the awful plans for that Starbucks in my neighborhood!" So I got up at the crack of dawn, biked over, and joined a few other folks on SE Division in front of the Ladd's Meat Building. I had downloaded and made copies of some flyers made expressly for this event and posted here on indymedia. The flyers are geared toward drivers sitting at the long light there, and warned thta if the Starbucks goes in, traffic and waits will be even worse. "Outreach to the Commuting Community", I guess you'd call this. ;-)

More 911 Revelations Yield Even More Questions
To be technically correct, the stewerdess identified seats and the computers provided names for those seats. However, remember that the FBI has stated publicly that the hijackers were using "skillfully made" fake IDs. So, in truth, we do not know who was really in those seats, only who we are supposed to think they were. also, note that the stewerdess describes a bomb being on board, which destroys the official story of perpetrators able to walk past airport security with box-cutters. This report of a bomb, plus other reports of tear gas, and as World Net Daily reported, at least one gun, strongly suggests that the perps had inside access and were able to bypass security entirely.

Bush Phenomena explained over 25 years ago in the movie Three Days of the Condor
But there is a deeper part of human nature which covers the planet in a sickly, light-sweet-crude blanket of denial. It is best exemplified from the closing lines of Sidney Pollack's 1975 Three Days of the Condor, perhaps the best spy movie ever made. As FTW has shown in recent stories - using declassified CIA documents - the CIA was well aware of Peak Oil in the mid 1970s. Three Days of the Condor took that awful truth and said then, what few in the post-9/11 world have had the courage to say. I can guarantee you that it is the overriding rationale in Dick Cheney's mind, in the mind of every senior member of the Bush administration, and in the mind of whomever it is that will be chosen as the 2004 Democratic Party nominee. Getting rid of Bush will not address the underlying causative factors of energy and money and any solution that does not address those issues will prove futile.

Bush, Mars, Peak Oil, and Manifest Destiny
Oil is not just about transportation, it is about virtually everything made in an industrial society (plastics for instance). It is about food supply - which covers planting and harvesting, fertilizer, processing, and transportation. It is about the energy that gets used to run electric power plants. The loss of oil is about the death of mass civilization (and the populations in it).
