"From Taos: Friday and Saturday February 6 & 7 - Movie at the BAREISS GALLERY -7:30
pm - free THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS "What can a 36-year old docudrama about a colonial war in North Africa tell us today? Maybe more than we'd like to know. The Battle of Algiers shows how ragtag forces, with little real firepower behind them, were able to paralyze a Western army and drive that army into reliance on torture and other desperate measures, which ultimately fail. "Commissioned by the Algerian government after it achieved independence from France and directed in crude, swift fashion by Gillo Pontecorvo, The Battle of Algiers remains astonishing because it is an officially sanctioned statement about the value of terrorism to achieve political ends. (The scene showing a bomb set by Algerian rebels detonating in a soda shop retains a visceral power, even though subsequent events have far outstripped it in magnitude.) "This movie became a sort of political wet dream for Western leftists in the 1960s; the Black Panthers made it required viewing. The atrocities of Sept. 11, 2001 should make it required viewing at the White House." The Pentagon did choose to show the new re-released version of 'Battle for Algiers" ... why ??
The scenarios laid out here aren't nearly as drastic as the scenarios laid out by Thom Hartmann in "The Ice Age Cometh"

Wal-Mart is the bellwether of America's future. Over 1.4 million people now work for Wal-Mart. If American workers do not change how Wal-Mart operates, working Americans are in deep trouble.
We've been forced out of business because of the likes of Wal-Mart
"The economic downswing was relatively strong and lasted longer than normal. The downturn led to a job gap of six million jobs. Three million jobs were lost while another three million had to be created for the new workers coming on the market. The unempoyment rate is at nine percent, not six percent when those falling through the statistical screen are included..Businesses shift costs to the future and abroad.."

Pat Lowther was born, 1934, in Vancouver, BC, and murdered, 1975, by her husband, apparently jealous of her success as a poet. This poem, published postumously in 'A Stone Diary', 1977, marked what should have been the beginning of a strong poet's mature work.
Doc-Shop is short for Documentary Workshop. In this series of workshops we will explore the act of documentation through moving and still images, audio, writing and electronic archiving. We will explore documentation such as an act of intervention, control, creativity and we will look at different methodologies. These workshops will be excellent for anyone interested in documenting anything from their own backyard to major world issues.

Truth is shamelessly obscured by relentless quotes from oppositon figures oyrsuing American goals of "regime change", a euphemism for the overthrow of popularly elected governments.
According to several Egyptian dailies, former Egyptian Copts living in Europe and the U.S. are starting to stir news of ethnic strife ahead of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's annual Washington trip in the coming weeks.

A quick search of relatively progressive news sites, including znet.org, www.independent.co.uk, www.indymedia.org, is turning up NOTHING about the background of the coup d'etat that is currently underway in Haiti. Anyone know what the heck is REALLY going on, and where I can get more (English) info about it?

![]() There has been long debate in the Global Indymedia Network about this issue. Some would like to keep indymedia strictly based on cities, others would like to branch out with topic imc's. These sites collect articles about a specific topic throughout the imc network so they are all in one place. These sites create their own features and offer very detailed information on that topic, from an independant perspective. These sites are also dedicated to multilinguality because their scope covers more than one language.
Once again Liberals are showing their total lack of spine and total lack of ability to strike the iron while the iron is white hot. This is what happened when they declared their control over the peace movement that rose up against the war in Iraq by stating they were "backing away from more confrontational forms of protest like non-violent civil disobedience like blocking traffic in the streets of major cities" in the U.S. in March and April of last year.

I had the misfortune to read the recent article in the Tribune titled "Activist indulges capitalistic cravings". It was written by Jim Redden.
Now I have heard a couple people claim that Redden is something of a progressive, but this article is just another example of useless trash pushed out by for-profit commercial media which offers nothing of value to the reader.
this exceptionally well-written article by James C. Moore, the fellow who originally raised the
"issue" of Bush's military service (such as it was??) comes back with MORE fuel to the fire, and it's getting HOT for the Bushies...hot as hell! So...read this one...we repost, you decide!

"For its `business', industry in Germany needed 9.2 billion work hours in 1991. Ten years later only 6.2 billion hours were necessary.. Those who cause unemployment and crises should pay for their consequences just as the one causing an accident must be responsible for the damages. Thus when social security and state finances fall into crisis, a larger part of the profits should be mobilized to remedy the crises.."
Caring institutions must be explicit and intentional about the role of love as their guiding principle, without apology. There can be no greater justification for providing good care and education for our children than the value of love. The basis and ultimate justification for early childhood education must be, first and foremost, love - without apology.
Pablo Neruda, "injustice" Last night I awoke panicked. I had dreamt of a talk show like Donahue. The talk show agent was a vice mouth of corporate media. They were asking political prisoners and their lawyers questions that could not be answered because the questions were lies. The lawyers kept trying to explain they were lies but corporate media hosts were tricky. The prisoners, hundreds of them were begging to be heard on death row, life imprisonment. The INNjustice system. Stop corporate Media! Turn them off, turn them away! Resist!

On June 8th, the first day of the G8's behind-closed-doors meetings off the coast of Georgia, the Biotechnology Industry Association's (BIO) annual convention will convene in downtown San Francisco. We must reclaim and transform our communities and the world by asserting our power to create socially just, directly democratic, ecological, equitable, and peaceful alternatives to the agenda of trans-national corporations and the U.S. government, which are trying to gain monopoly control over the global food supply, water supply and the genetic building blocks of life itself. This is a call to begin visioning the next phase of our movement, the phase of building, growing, creating and manifesting solutions to the ecological devastation and social injustice that is clearly articulated by the biotech industry and the G8 at large. hey quick question -- why is it that the first two words of every story are getting smashed together with no space between? at first, i thought it was just misspellings, but now i've noticed that ALL the stories in the center column are like that. is this some wierd formatting glitch? what's up? it looks kinda sloppy....

In this piece I discuss the significance of toppling the religious right and destroying their power. This will require unconventional weapons of mass destruction, which, fortunately, I possess. Because I am concerned that 'secular' people will not understand these unconventional techniques, I discuss my WMD and then I move on to the tit for tat battle raging between myself and the religious right (and them's fighting words...let's go!)

The Taliban outlawed opium cultivation and had almost stamped out the practise. Afghan output now accounts for two-thirds of world opium production and ...it is spreading to areas in the country where it has not been grown before.
