An Annotated Critique of the Foreign Policy Segments of President George W. Bush's 2004 State of the Union Address
Bark is more in need of volunteer help than anytime before!
"...They see Bush as a vicious, thoughtless warmonger with fascist tendencies, Americans as arrogant brutes who don't give a passing thought to the innocent people who die at the hands of their government and rapacious corporations as hegemonic steamrollers that crush cultural distinctiveness and independence in their ceaseless quest for the almighty dollar..."

This certainly isn't the worst article that's ever appeared in the WW (especially by its notorious author, Nick Budnick). Factually, it's on-base (which with the corporate media cannot by any means be assumed), but the style of Budnick and the WW (and most city weeklies across the country) continutes to be grating. His "hip" (or is it "post-hip"?) oh-so-clever tone (seen here in the descriptions of the R&B and its customers) has a tendency to trivialize whatever subject it touches, especially when that subject is activists and their concerns; note, in contrast, his straight-up quoting of the Starbucks corporate line with no irony whatsoever. Is this nit-picking (or maybe, "Nick-picking")? No. It's important to be a careful reader if you're going to expose yourself to the slick corporate media, and form is just as important as content. In the case of the WW (and, as I said, most weeklies across the country), that form is usually fairly cloying, with the result that its subjects are often cast more tritely than they deserve.
Still, with a campaign like this one, there's some truth to the adage that any coverage is good coverage. This article will bring the struggle to keep Starbucks out of Seven Corners to the attention of more people, many of whom will see through the fluffy veneer and who might lend their energy to the fight, and that's great. I'll stop short of thanking Budnick for his effort though -- it is, after all, just his job. ;-)

Alice Loveless. In conflict resolution I showed you some of the poetry written by her students. Today I want to share a poem of hers that has particular ressonance with me. In this poem she talks about the genocide days when a group of scurvied malnourished men destroyed the tropical regions, murdering women, and enslaving the globe. In it she remembers and yet she persists in the present feeling the pain of these enslaved times. As the serial murders and mauraders ramsacked the globe she remebers the child who lived. Resist! Recycle!

a short time ago, I posted a piece about GOLD and it's soon projected upswing in price, and the
possiblities of significant profits to be earned as result. It was clear, in the context, that the U. S. economy was soon to do a major dive as result, and now, we have the former Malaysian Prime Minister telling the Saudi Arabians that they ought to get off the "dollar habit" and sell their oil for gold. I'd bet they'll do so...but, they'll meet same fate as Saddam, for he'd sought to shake-up the world's economy by selling Iraqi oil for Euro's and this incurred the wrath of Georgie & junta and he was then removed from office via "regime change" based on lies. WHAT lies will Bush & regime tell on Saudi Arabians to keep them selling oil for dollars, rather than get bitten by the Gold Bug???? What lies indeed????

Fun for all, except those of us who actually live in the US where it's just self-medication...
Portland TV news once had a reputation for examining serious issues and shying away from the emotion and hype of heavy crime coverage, but now newscasts feature more faces of sex abusers and rape suspects than office holders, business leaders and educators.
It has been almost 3 years since the killing of Mexican immigrant Jose Mejia Poot at the hands of Portland police. The Latino community has been trying that whole time to get some accountability from the Portland police for their racist and violent behavior. The police Citizen Review Committee TRIED to hear this case last year, and were prevented from doing so by City officials who sabotaged the process--this incident led to the resignation of the majority of CRC members, who denounced the entire "citizen review" process as a sham. Now the ex-CRC members are trying to carry out their responsibility as private citizens to make sure this case is not forgotten. Let's all be there to support them, and support our Latino brothers and sisters!

In a public conversation attended by 500 people and Webcast to 4,000 more worldwide recently on
the Berkeley campus, Pusztai, Losey, Hayes and Chapela shared their experiences and together explored ways to prevent similar fates from ever happening to their peers. Their similar stories provide a unique window into a disturbing trend in modern science. These four men were not attacked because of flawed or imperfect experiments but because the findings of their work have a potential economic effect. The sad part is that the academies and other allegedly independent institutions that once defended scientific freedom and protected employees like Hayes, Chapela, Losey and Pusztai are abandoning them. . .
