THE APACHE KILLING VIDEO
I agree with the readers who wrote in suggesting that the vehicle on the left is a tractor and that the Apache just blew away some farmers. I'm a farm kid myself, and there is no question that the men were involved in some kind of agricultural activity, most likely ploughing. This is cold blooded murder and this video records a war crime. Certainly the video makes it clear that the Apache was not engaged in evasive flight indicating that it was under any kind of a threat. Make local copies of this video. Put them on CD-ROMS. Hand them out.

My only encounter with Jim Hyde
When we did the Ron Wyden sit-in during the vote to authorize force in Iraq, we sent out press releases to all of the press we could think of. Noone from the Oregonian, noone from WW or the Mercury or OPB, or streetroots, or any of several radio stations, and noone from the Tribune showed up. Several Indymedia people came and attended all day and did good stories on the event, Dave Mazza from the Alliance came and stayed all day (but I never saw an article--doesn't mean one didn't come out), one TV news camera (with no reported) from a station I can't remember came out for about 5 minutes, and Jim Hyde and a camera person came out. Jim stayed for about 45 minutes, he took his time interviewing people outside and in. He was incredibly respectful of us, friendly, he asked intelligent, thoughtful questions. I was somewhat shocked because I expected him to be a jerk, being from KPTV and such.

POLICE VIOLENCE AT WTO RIOTS COST SEATTLE TAXPAYERS $250,000
Cop violence at LEIU protests in Seattle, Wa June 2, 2003 (Pic from Seattle IMC) In a time when Seattle is in deep need of money for its schools, its health care systems, for affordable housing, for public transportation, etc., we are paying $250,000, and rightly so, to protesters who were grotesquely violated at the WTO protests in 1999. And Seattle did not learn from that riot, as it produced two more unnecessary police riots in 2003, which still need to be addressed properly by officials, and perhaps the courts. Perhaps using this WTO case as precedence...

Finding Colours of Resistance
What lessons have we learned since the anti-WTO actions in Seattle? Can those lessons be applied to anti-war organizing? Can local struggles challenge global capitalism? How do we build movement for global justice that is anti-racist, multiracial and feminist? Pauline Hwang and Helen Luu have not only been asking these hard questions, they have worked to open up movement wide discussions about these issues in Canada and the United States. Pauline and Helen's activist work, writing and ability to connect people through the Colours of Resistance network have all helped to keep the hard issues on the table. And, as they argue, these are issues we must face if we're serious about collective liberation.

Although the facts of the Bush family/Nazi Germany connection have been whirling around in cyberspace for years, veteran journalist John Buchanan was among the first to confirm the story in print. Now he's running against George W. in the New Hampshire Republican primary.

His platform is quixotically idealistic: (1) end the corporate reign in this country by getting corporations out of politics and government entirely; (2) end war profiteering by former government officials and Washington insiders, which leads to billions of dollars in secret profits that are banked offshore, without scrutiny; (3) reform the media. His campaign manager is David Kubiak, a Democrat who ran in the New Hampshire primary for vice president in 2000.

Community Food Security Workshop this Saturday!
January 17 9am - Noon
St. Philip Neri Catholic Church SE 18th & Division

Why this workshop?
There are many signs in the Oregon area that point to the need to strengthen our region's food system. Oregon is the hungriest state in the nation. Farmers struggle to remain economically viable. Around the country people are beginning to see that food is a profoundly spiritual and moral concern. Communities of faith can play a vital role in creating a more just and sustainable system.

The goal of community food security is to develop communities that are food secure, that is "all persons in the community having access to culturally acceptable, nutriionally adequate food through local non-emergency sources at all times." It links environmental, economic, public health and anti-hunger efforts to a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

This workshop will explore:

  • Connections among food, faith, justice an sustainability.
  • Approaches to making sure everyone in our neighborhoods has access to fresh, nutritious culturally appropriate food
  • Roles that congregations can play
  • Why buying local food is so important
  • New partnerships to build the local food system

9-11 PENTAGON FIRE COVER-UP: "rescue" as 60 hr. witness assassination
comments by poster: I've been looking into various issues of 9-11 for two years, and still find myself humbled by how nefarious the hooligans who run the US are. This is a detailed analysis, drawn from documented sources, of how the Pentagon 9-11 fire was allowed to rage for 60 hours to assure all witnesses were dead. Lots of other interesting oddities: Oh, then they brought in a wrecking ball to make sure they were dead, etc.; Oh, and the FBI takes over the Pentagon, dismissing health worker rescuers and tackle it themselves; oh, and the Pentagon refuses to allow medical evacuations after the first 'accidentaly allowed' flight out to hospitals--wants them to die there, raising death totals. Oh, military calls in fake terror hits, cancelling search for people alive (or eye-witnesses to what many describe as explosions "smelling like cordite"). Motivations: to selling war you allow a small fire to grow due to lack of anyone allowed near it, allowed to run out of control for 60 hours, from a little 70 foot wide hole originally. Lots of detail here into something I had yet to even see covered anywhere: the kind of good detail that makes you sick of this evil government because all the actors come together in this story. This is kind of a horror story more akin to dark fireside retelling, out in the spooky woods, than bright daylight in the weeks after 9-11...It shows how lost is the media of this country of ever getting to the bottom of 9-11 without our help. This story even got an epilogue, Part V, in which her well documented story was attacked... There should be 9-11 Pulitzer Prizes given. I'd nominate Carol for investigative reporting.

Another Amer. political prisoner, Simkanin: questions income tax legality, is jailed
Dick Simkanin studied the details of the U.S. tax laws, he repeatedly asked the government to "show him the law" and when it refused - he acted upon the words and letter of the written law. Feds unable to cite any tax laws requiring filing income taxes, and jail him, and stop him from introducing this as evidence in his trial.
Dick Simkanin's story is continuing. With our help and commitment, he will overcome this judicial farce and justice will ultimately prevail. His "trial" was instructive. In that courtroom, we stared into the eyes of the despots and witnessed firsthand, the corruption and fear of a police state, dependent solely on an unsustainable illusion for the continuation of its existence, -- a vast deception upon our People that withers further and further each day.

July, 1999: Hawaii Senator Inouye to one of his constituents, a tax consultant. This official letter says it all: First it establishes that there is NO provision in the law that specifically requires citizens to file and pay income taxes, but then goes on to state that the IRS regulations set forth "penalties" for failure to pay, what must therefore by the written law, be a "voluntary" "tax". Incredulous? Yes. According to a U.S. Senator and the IRS regulations, citizens can (& will) be penalized for not filing, collecting and paying to our servant government the so-called "income tax", even though there is NO provision in U.S. law. . .
