It is time we the people take back our Power which has been so greviously been betrayed!!
The fact is that the legislature's budget bill (HB 2152) would not cost Oregonians one (1) cent in new taxes because of all the federal tax cuts. Here is a table of how much federal tax cuts and one time tax surcharges will be for Oregonians if Measure 30 passes.

Happy New Year Activists and Union Members! Today I have picked a special poem for you called As Life Was Five, written by Jimmy Santiago Baca. Mr Baca, just finished helping to compile a book of the United Steel Workers poetry called Steel Works. I chose this peice in honor of Miami. It is truly inspiring to me, to see the the steel workers reaching out to us in solidarity. It is my hope that we will honor this great alliance with unions and radicals, artist with artist, poet to poet! May we forge this union in the fire and temper it with steel. Rise UP!

Here are the lyrics to the new Willie Nelson song, "Whatever Happened To Peace On Earth?". You can hear a web broadcast of the song's debut during a rally for dennis Kucinich on Jan. 3, 8:00 PM Cntral (6:00 in PDX) at www.kucinich.us. Someone of Nelson's stature will no doubt add momentum to the anti-war movement. There are countless people who are both fans of Willie and who also need to hear this message. "Preachng to the choir" may be great for self-aggrandizement, but folks like Willie will get the mesage to the people who most need to hear it. Bush might "win" the war but WE can still win the peace!
On this tenth anniversary of the emergence of the Zapatistas from the Lacandon jungle, we call for the formation of a continental anti-authoritarian anti-capitalist network for North America. Our movements for liberation and freedom have met many challenges and our resistance continues to grow. It is now time to organize ourselves better through a de-centralized continental network of anti-capitalists.
"The most important asset of democracy is the trust of its citizens in the reliability of its rules and the persons representing these rules. Democracy needs general approval, not merely partial approval for a party in elections. Democracy is endangered where citizens become negative and withdraw resigned or indignant.. without finding their way to the polling station.." translated from the German
"Reforms were favorite goals and long-term hobbies of the left in Germany.. The basic impulse of reforms was philanthropic. This has completely changed. Sometime in the 1980s, the term fell into the hands of the neoliberals. Perhaps the left was tired or worn out and did not adjust. Since then, reform has meant something new: social cuts, profit-oriented privatization of the public infrastructure.."
![]() The document, titled Middle East - Possible Use of Force by the United States, said that, if faced with deteriorating conditions such as a breakdown of the ceasefire between Arab and Israeli forces following the October 1973 Yom Kippur War or an intensification of the embargo, "we believe the American preference would be for a rapid operation conducted by themselves" to seize the oilfields. It cited a warning from then defence secretary James Schlesinger to the British ambassador in the US, Lord Cromer, that Washington would not tolerate threats from "under-developed, under-populated" countries and that "it was no longer obvious to him that the United States could not use force". The 1973 embargo and production cuts, used by oil-rich Arab nations as a means to put pressure on the United States and Western Europe, caused a major global energy crisis and sent oil prices skyrocketing. The committee of intelligence service directors calculated that the United States could guarantee sufficient oil supplies for themselves and their allies by taking oil fields in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi, with total reserves of more than 28 billion tonnes. It warned however that the U.S. occupation would need to last 10 years, as western nations developed alternative energy sources, and would lead to the "total alienation" of Arab states and many developing countries, as well as "domestic dissension" in the United States.

His thoughts on the new year.
As it is (very nearly now) New Year's Day 2004, I thought a simple story and prayer called The War Prayer is a very moving thing to think about. Mark Twain wrote this about 100 years ago (1904 or 1905), in response to the Americans' war with the Phillipines in 1899-1902. BUT his publisher refused to print it. (That really sounds familiar, too, doesn't it?) Twain never published it while he was alive, but the War Prayer was found among his papers when he died. I think it speaks volumes to us today: in the repeat of a 100-year old American imperialist war; the rampant 'patriotism' and silence of dissent; and in the universal devastation of war.

The American imperialist butchers made clear, yet again, the kind of "democracy" they have in mind for Iraq when U.S. troops yesterday fired into a protest in support of Hussein in a town west of Baghdad, killing three people.

Willie Nelson has a new hit song out coming out soon. Well at least I hope it's gonna be a hit song. I hope it's all over the radio and TV. Can't wait to hear to hear the tune but like the sound of the words, and they resonate well enough to me.

The anti-Everglades bill had the full support of the governor and the loyalist governing board of the water management district. David Struhs, secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, misled state legislators when he claimed that federal agencies supported the bad bill.
For misstating the truth, Gov. Jeb Bush should have asked for the resignation of his lieutenant. Instead of using this blatant example of moral relativism and standing up for the truth, the public bore witness to the dismissal, transfer and silencing of key staff in environmental agencies who dared to differ with a governor for whom policy is what he believes to be true, whether facts support him or not.
In brief: blogs (online journals) are taking over and monopoly media says the sky is falling. Good!
President George W. Bush is asking top aides to produce recommendations for achieving a transition to democracy in Cuba after 44 years of communist rule, administration officials said.
A small group of advisers, including Secretary of State Colin Powell, is being asked to provide advice on hastening what the Bush administration calls the "inevitable democratic transition in Cuba."

So, this is the crunch time, watch out for the elections. Watch out for November 2004. All that value that is being spent propping up an uncompetitive American economy, sucking in cash from foreigners and creating huge waves of debt is not sustainable, even in the medium term. Bits of it might be, like war or tariffs, especially war. But both the imbalance and the greed of the financial industries will mean that eventually Americans will pay it back. The poorest 95% that is.

"There is more poverty today than in the eighties and nineties. This is a gift of the privatization of democracy. Poverty has increased in all Latin America.. The world lives with a great sin. The needy and oppressed die slowly and violently. Believing in God means being in solidarity with them.. Whenever someone exposes the hypocritical conduct of the powerful, he is insulted, defamed and sometimes killed.."
From now on, any cattle that cannot walk will no longer be eaten by Americans without being checked first for BSE. If they have some other disease, then, one assumes, Americans will continue to eat them. This, I suppose, counts as progress...
