did you see Bush on live TV this morning?...was he on drugs or a hangover?
Did you happen to view the live telecast of Bush's little speech this morning? He came to
the podium in stiff and brisk manner, then quickly went into his little remarks, never batting
his eyes; but with fixated look that was surreal in nature. When his remarks were over, he
quickly turned and fast paced to the exit behind him, nearly stumbling into the right side of
the entranceway. His speech came across as one who was "programmed" to say words
and then get the hell away from microphone when finished. In a way, he seemed like a
person on medications...maybe sedated? Or, could it be he was on a hang-over, as if we
recall his earlier life history, he was a drunken lush for major portion of his life. Isn't it odd
that his handler's would let him go on live TV in such fashion? Am waiting to find emerg-
ing commentary on same subject by others...let's have your comments on this!

Nature as Healer and Teacher
Nature is a healer and teacher, a wounded healer and scorned teacher, a majestic fountain of awe, wonder and inspiration. This essay focuses on the misuse and commodification of nature and calls us to new consciousness and new priorities. Nature, the foundation of economics, cries in pain because she is reduced to a free good, external or sink by a one-dimensional economism.

Jeffrey St. Clair 14.12.2003 02:56
The Map is not the Territory
EXCERPTED FROM: Been Brown So Long It Looked Like Green to Me When you think of Oregon, you probably think of forests. The highway maps help pump the mystique, splashing wide swaths of green across the state. It's another illusion. Two-thirds of the Oregon is desert, high desert: parched, austere, beautiful and vulnerable. The other third of the state, a thin 150-mile wide band from the Cascade Mountains to the Pacific Coast, harbors the mightiest forest on the continent. Now it too is becoming a kind of desert, a biological desert, an ecological dead zone.

A century of unbridled clearcutting has taken its toll. By 1980, the Cascades, that lush volcanic range running from British Columbia to northern California, had been transformed into a patchwork of a hundred thousand clearcuts, a sight so surreal that stunned even President Carter when he flew over Mt. St. Helens to survey the damage. Carter mistook the scars of logging for the blast of the volcano. There's a difference. The forests flattened by Mount St. Helens are starting to come back to life. The land leveled by the timber cartel isn't.

Voting Machines Gone Wild!
Why are major defense contractors like Northrop-Grumman and Lockheed-Martin mucking about in the American electoral system? And who are Accenture and EDS?

Until January 1, 2001, Accenture was known as Andersen Consulting, a part of Arthur Andersen. Despite having offshore headquarters, Accenture is a member of the U.S. Coalition of Service Industries (USCSI), an industry association that promotes vastly extending the privatization and free trade in services via the WTO and GATT. It also is a member of U.S. Trade, the coalition that pushed for fast-track trade authority.

Why Northrop-Grumman, Lockheed-Martin, EDS and Accenture have been hired to alter the election process in America becomes clear when personnel is considered. The three largest voting machine companies in America are Election Systems and Software (ES&S), Sequoia and Diebold. Like Accenture, they, too, have tarnished pasts.

Fur Free Friday Marchers Lend Loud Voice for the Critters
Too loud to ignore and fun for the whole animal-loving family! This year's Fur Free Friday March in downtown Portland had something for everyone—an exuberant faux-furred wolf for the kids, an angry fur store proprietor for the cops, more than 100 raucous marchers to educate the gridlocked shoppers, and even a couple of pooches showing off their beautiful (original owner) fur coats.

The animals had loud voice as 115 traffic-stopping activists of all ages took over Yamhill Street, forcing shoppers to consider the 41 million fur bearing animals brutalized by the fur trapping and farming industries for fashion and greed in the U.S. every year.
