Another Black Man Dies At Hands of Cincinnati Police
Nathaniel Jones died Sunday after bludgeoning by officers with metal nightsticks "We are outraged and appalled that a Black man, arrested for disorderly conduct, wound up dead," said an angry Amanda Mayes, co-chair of the Coalition for a Just Cincinnati, an organization founded in 2001 following the death of Timothy Thomas, a Black man shot dead by police.

Nathaniel Jones's death marks the ninth "Black man murdered by Cincinnati Police," in two years, Mayes said.

DUDE, WHERE'S MY INTEGRITY?
So Michael Moore has progressive political views on some issues. So what? News flash: So does John McCain; Dick Cheney even expressed "progressive" views on homosexuality in a televised interview. No, Moore isn't either of those people, he's a lot more progressive than they are and maybe than most people. But that doesn't make him a hero, especially when he uses the mileage from those progressive views to direct liberal scorn at "the left", to openly call for a war criminal to run for President, and to express belief in the guilt of a death row inmate with lots of evidence for his innocence.

Just remember: vote Democrat, Mumia's guilty, and forget all those crazy causes. So says Michael Moore, and the chorus of loyal liberals following in his path. Or, if they're not actually saying it, they sure aren't dissenting.

Among the "criminal activities" of protesters catalogued in the memo are "use of the internet to recruit, raise funds, and coordinate their activities prior to demonstrations" as well as "[d]uring the course of a demonstration ... using cell phones or radios to coordinate activities or to update colleagues about ongoing events."

CLASS - Democrat vs. Green in San Francisco Mayoral Race
I thought I'd share some news about the current mayoral election in San Francisco, going to a run-off on Dec. 9. They are Gavin Newsom, a DLC-style Democrat, and Matt Gonzalez, a progressive Green Party member and currently president of the Board of Supervisors (SF's city council). Newsom made his name passing anti-homeless and pro-growth legislation; Gonzalez is a true progressive activist.

I've never seen an election that was more explicitly about class. The best and most accurate quote about the run-off came from Peter Camejo, the Greens' 2000 candidate for governor: "This is not a Green versus Democrat fight,'' he said. "It's a coalition of Greens, progressive Democrats and independents against moderate and conservative Democrats and Republicans.''

At the moment, the candidates are running neck and neck. The Dems are panicking and throwing everything they have into stopping Gonzalez's election (Al Gore's even coming to town to stump on Newsom's behalf).

U.S. Military Bases In Iraq - Too Enticing To Pass Up
Despite Rumsfeld's denial, Tom Donnelly, a military specialist at the American Enterprise Institute with close links to Pentagon planners, published an article in the neo-conservative Weekly Standard that took Rumsfeld to task for not "fess[ing] up" that bases in Iraq were entirely consistent with changes in Washington's global military posture. Iraqi airfields in particular, he wrote, "are ideally located for deployments throughout the region ... There's plenty of space, not only for installations but for training," he said, adding confidently, "And they are enough removed from Mesopotamia that they would not be 'imperial' irritants to the majority of Iraqis."

Inside Story of How Washington Is Losing Its Battle
Take Afghanistan first. You don't read or see much about it these days. The reality is grim. The Taliban is resurgent; al-Qaeda is there too, but not as relevant as it was. Attacks on aid workers are soaring; many are refusing to leave the urban areas. The warlords are back in control of the countryside, where opium production is already above pre-invasion levels. "Afghanistan is a narco-economy once more," said one intelligence analyst.

It is not much better for Iraq. There are now an average of 130 attacks a day on coalition (mainly American) forces; almost 100 coalition troops have been killed in November, the grimmest month so far. "We only have a third of the forces we need to fight the insurgents," one former US diplomat told me. The intelligence is threadbare too: US commanders have no real idea who they are up against. "We still don't really know who is behind the attacks. So we just go around kicking doors in - which is exactly what the enemy wants us to do."

In addition, it is unclear whether the United States, whose motives for invading Iraq are regarded with skepticism by many, will feel it can oppose a clear call for popular democracy — exactly what the United States said it wanted to bring to Iraq.
