Who Put The 'Z' in Pennzoil?
Penn Oil Company + [Bush family] Zapata Petroleum By 1955, Zapata was involved in two distinct oil businesses, offshore drilling and land drilling. Business seemed to be running smoothly. Soon, however, the Liedtke brothers began to grow impatient with the control Uncle Walker sought to establish over Zapata. To restore harmony, a series of stock swaps orchestrated by Bush resulted in divided control over Zapata Offshore and Zapata Petroleum. Bush and Uncle Walker won control over the offshore business and the Liedtkes gained control of the original Zapata Petroleum. By 1963, Hugh Liedtke was ready to expand Zapata Petroleum by merging it with the Penn Oil Company. The combined company took the name Pennzoil, with Hugh Liedtke at the helm as president and chief executive officer.

COG DISS: Bu$h Distances from Cheney on Saddam-9/11 Link
President Bush distanced himself on Wednesday from comments by Vice President Dick Cheney that left the impression he saw a possible link between Saddam Hussein and the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. "We've had no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved in Sept. 11," Bush told reporters as he met members of Congress on energy legislation.

Despite distancing himself from part of what Cheney said, Bush frequently suggested in speeches in the run-up to war that there was a link between Iraq and the al Qaeda network. In recent speeches, he has called Iraq the "central front" in the war on terror despite the failure to find conclusive evidence that Saddam was developing weapons of mass destruction.

INFERNAL NOISE BRIGADE, sentencing this Friday!
One of the members of the Infernal Noise Brigade was convicted in our recent trial in Portland. Jenna Barrett's sentencing is this Friday at the Multanomah County Courthouse. Due to the very recent trial and our attendance of the actions in Cancun against the WTO, very few Brigadeer's will be able to be there to support her in person. Although we greatly apprectiate the attendance by the few PDX'ers who were there for the trial, we were somewhat disappointed by the lack of turnout by Portland's community. Especially, as we supposedly have a large fan base/support for what we do down there. I fear that the band's decisions as to whether or not to play future events in PDX will be affected by the apparent lack of support for us down there. Please turn that opinion and our string of bad experiences in your fine city around by coming out to show your support!
thanks,

U.S. Facing a Rise In Iraqi Hostility
New intelligence assessments are warning that the United States' most formidable foe in Iraq in the months ahead may be the resentment of ordinary Iraqis increasingly hostile to the U.S. military occupation, Defense Department officials say.

That picture, shared with U.S. military commanders in Iraq, is very different from the public view currently being presented by senior Bush administration officials, including Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who again on Tuesday listed only "dead-enders, foreign terrorists and criminal gangs" as opponents of the U.S. occupation.

The Defense Department officials spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity, saying they were concerned about retribution for straying from the official line.

What exactly is a neo-con? They (I'm talking about Wolfowitz's team of mad Straussians at DoD) told Bush that there was irrefutable proof of the existence of weapons of mass destruction inside Iraq. Wrong. They told him the prime Iraqi exile group, headed by Ahmad Chalabi, had street cred in Iraq. Wrong. They told him it would be easy to install a US regime in Baghdad and make the place hum quietly along, like Lebanon in the 1950s. Wrong.

It would be housed in the new Terrorist Screening Center, a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week operation under the FBI's lead.

The CIA will provide information on individuals with ties to international terror organizations, such as al-Qaida and Hezbollah. The FBI will feed the center its data on individuals sought for domestic terror activities, such as bombing abortion clinics or torching sport-utility vehicles.

The US Senate is preparing to vote on misguided wildfire legislation as early as this week! Please contact Senator Wyden after reading the following alert, and share with other concerned citizens as well.

The so-called "Healthy Forests Restoration Act," HR 1904, has a very high likelihood of being taken up by the Senate within a few days. S. 1453 provides funding and establishes programs for truly restoring forests and watersheds degraded by activities such as fire suppression, logging and road building, and funds watershed restoration work

Republicans for Dean
These sorts of articles are scary and make false assumptions, but nonetheless, they are important to read so that one can be aware of the agendas going on, the view of the corporate media, etc. Note that in here he makes this point that Americans are better educated than in the past, but he makes no mention of the increased hijacking of the media (i.e., Fox footsoldiers for the Bush adminstration), or the fact that lies are being put out on the public (i.e., Cheney on Sunday) with virtually no response from congress or the media. Regardless of how 'educated' Americans are now, so is the corporate media, whose goal is to control what the voters will do depending on how they cover it. What they want now is this - "supporting a candidate so ideologically amorphous that he can appeal to these swingers." And that's how we get things like NAFTA and the silent deaths of millions of brown people all over the world. Dean will be no different. The right wing's spin that Dean is so progressive is part of an agenda. It's a lose-lose situation - they spin him as left so independents don't want him, but in the meantime, progressives are being tricked. Dean is being outed with every passing day for his false positions and shifting loyalties. Pretty soon he won't have any progressives, much less the independents.
