Troops Dig Into Own Pockets To Pay For Gear
Patrick Garrett, a defense analyst with GlobalSecurity.org says, "the Army ran out of desert camo boots, and a lot of soldiers were being issued regular black combat boots. Soldiers decided that wasn't for them, so they paid for new boots with their own money."

According to the Pentagon's "Operation Iraqi Freedom Lessons Learned" draft report, soldiers spent their own money to get better field radios, extra ammunition carriers to help them fight better and commercial backpacks because their own rucksacks were too small.

Todos Somos Lee
A few thousand of us maybe. No more. The crowd snakes through Cancun, a neo-liberal paradise lost. Of the 600,000 people who live here fully two-thirds are transient laborers. Like a large proportion of the world's population they exist in the twilight zone of mobile capital, industrial tourism and ecological catastrophe.

At the WTO fortification; a fence ten foot high reinforced by a matrix of steel and concrete a crowd assembles. Behind the fence, thousands of cops. The farmers electrify the mood. The Mexican campensinos push a table displaying a collection of diverse corn strains, alter-like, and are lead by one who carries a basket of kernels on his back. They say that the transgenic agenda of the WTO will mean the end of all this.

U.S. Housing Unaffordable to Most Low-Income Workers
With the rise in housing costs outpacing that of wages, there is no state where a low-income worker can reasonably afford a modest one- or two-bedroom rental unit, according to a study issued today by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, an advocacy group based in Washington. The study, "Out of Reach 2003," compared wages in each state, large metropolitan area and county in the nation against fair market rents as determined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. In 40 states, the study found, renters need to earn more than two times the prevailing minimum wage to afford basic housing. In the most expensive states — Massachusetts, California, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Connecticut — they must earn more than three times the minimum wage.

Folly Taken To A Scale We Haven't Seen Since WWII
What do these precedents mean? I have a dark suspicion. From now on, our leaders, our politicians, our statesmen will be fair game too. If we go for the jugular, why shouldn't they? The killing of the UN's Sergio Vieira de Mello, was not, I think, a chance murder.

Global Warming is good for you (unless you are an American)
I have been doing some research on climate history, and my research has taken me to the 'advocates' of Global Warming, who paint a rosy scenario of Global Climate Change. A change of only a degree or two takes us back in time about 8,000 years, when things were much better for much of the third world, even if it is bad news for Americans. A facts based parody of these rosy scenarios...
