Gen. Wesley Clark Reportedly Is Asked to Join Dean
Last week, Dean said the United States should not "take sides" in the Middle East conflict and said that an "enormous" number of Israeli settlements would have to be dismantled as part of a peace agreement. Yesterday, Dean shifted course, saying the settlements should be left to negotiators.

Black copters over Oregon when President Bush visits Oregon
Black copters over Oregon
President Bush visits rural Oregon to tout his forest plan. Suddenly, huge fires burn. Now a small town is consumed by conspiracy theories.

- - - - - - - - - - - -
By Bill Donahue

Sept. 8, 2003 | SISTERS, Ore. -- The helicopters were indeed black, and when they came thwocking through the clear blue skies above Redmond, Ore., on the afternoon of Aug. 19, Don Berry happened to be having a slow day selling campers and fifth wheels at Courtesy RV. "We just stood there in the lot, my friend Chuck and me, watching," he says before launching into a bit of detail that government sources will not confirm. "They were Chinook military helicopters -- huge things with round noses. There were three of them, and they were moving in tight formation, lollygagging over the woods, zigzagging near [the town of] Sisters and out toward Black Butte," some 25 miles to the northwest.

Bu$h's Tin Cup -- $87 Billion Appeal for Credibility
Larger than the entire four-year cost of the Marshall Plan The one-year sum is larger than the entire cost of the Marshall Plan, which lasted four years and cost American taxpayers a total of $11.8 billion in 1950 dollars. Adjusted for inflation, the Marshall Plan would have a total cost of $86 billion today, with this difference: The plan helped 16 nations and 270 million people in Europe rebuild after World War II, compared with the Bush Plan in Iraq and Afghanistan, which will mostly pay for military occupation, with trickle down benefits going to 24 million Iraqis and 28 million Afghans.

Blood, Oil, and Tears - and the 2004 Bush Campaign Strategy
Our occupation troops are mostly European-, Hispanic-, and African-American-ancestry Christians in an Arab Muslim land that suffered during the Crusades. Thus, we will continue to draw thousands of Jehadists who find it infinitely easier to travel to Iraq than New York, and our presence will continue to inflame nationalists' passions just as the British did in their failed venture in Iraq nearly a century ago. And George W. Bush will probably lose the 2004 election, unless he can divert our attention by ginning up a war somewhere else within 13 months.

Intellectual Property
Intellectual property rights are a ticking time bomb. It seems fairly obvious that artists wouldn't want their stuf sent around just anywhere for free, and without even knowing about it. It is less obvious that the same legal maneuvers are used to "patent" the genome of a rice plant or "own" someone's cell line (someone besides the new owner, that is.)

In any case, suing 12-year olds for copying songs seems like a good way to eliminate the desire for recorded music. Live music might inadvertently get a boost from all this

Random Thoughts on our Fair City: Portland
A series of random thoughts about what makes Portland great and what threatens that greatness. Written originally as a response to some Zoo Bomb detractor it became a thing itself. I hope it sparks thoughtful reflection and quality conversation.

A sample: Beware of those who promise quick, easy, or painless economic recovery for they are selling you a bill of goods that you do not want. Beware of those who complain about the social backwater of Oregon because they threaten to reshape your community rather than to celebrate its beauty. Beware of people who proclaim affinity with Portland and point to their bumper sticker to prove it after they bitch everything that would make Portland better. Portland is a beautiful and socially progressive and evolving place; beware of those who were not drawn here by that beauty and by that social community because they cannot see or appreciate the only true value and beauty that Portland, specifically, and Oregon, generally, has to offer.
