The loneliness of Noam Chomsky
Noam Chomsky (AFP photo) After September 11, the mainstream media's blatant performance as the U.S Government's propaganda machine has only served to highlight the business of `managing' public opinion. The resultant `mistrust of the mass media' would at best be a political hunch or at worst a loose accusation, if it were not for the relentless and unswerving media analysis of one of the world's greatest minds. And this is only one of the ways in which Noam Chomsky has radically altered our understanding of the society in which we live. Rationally and empirically, he has unmasked the ugly, manipulative, ruthless American universe that exists behind the word `freedom', says ARUNDHATI ROY, in an essay written as an introduction for the new edition of Noam Chomsky's 'For Reasons of State' (New Press, 2003).

Diebold Voting Machine Controversy in Ohio
Walden W. O'Dell, Chairman of the Board, President, and CEO of Diebold, Inc. Walden O'Dell--chief executive of Diebold Inc. and active in the re-election effort of President Bush--sent an Aug. 14 letter to central Ohio Republicans asking them to raise $10,000 in donations in time for a Sept. 26 Ohio Republican Party event at his home, saying that he is "committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year."

O'Dell attended a strategy pow-wow with wealthy Bush benefactors - known as Rangers and Pioneers - at the president's Crawford, Texas, ranch earlier this month. The next week, he penned invitations to a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser to benefit the Ohio Republican Party's federal campaign fund - partially benefiting Bush - at his mansion in the Columbus suburb of Upper Arlington.

Latest republican "argument"
Brit Hume lies on Faux News website Yes, the dittoheads are out in force with this whopper: It's ok that soldiers are being killed in Iraq because they're less likely to be killed than people in California (note that they chose California). The reality, of course, is that soldiers are 46 times as likely to be killed in Iraq than people in California. And, one would think that any soldiers dying without cause would be a bad thing, regardless of the rate of death.

Political Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition - A Summary
In May of this year a group of psychology researchers released a paper which caused a stir, titled "Political Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition", which sought to synthesize years of research into conservatism and the right wing phenomena. The paper is lengthy, and some of the terminology is difficult, and so I thought it might be good to post a summary of some of the interesting points it raised.

With a small, rational part of the brain, we recognize that our existence is governed by material realities, and that, as those realities change, so will our lives. But underlying this awareness is the deep semi-consciousness that absorbs the moment in which we live, then generalizes it, projecting our future lives as repeated instances of the present.

Day of Reckoning: Blair's Future May Hang On Testimony
When he steps into court 73 at the Royal Courts of Justice at 10.30 this morning, Tony Blair knows that his future as Prime Minister could hinge on the next couple of hours.

Blair aides now wish they had called a truce in the battle with the BBC. Of course they would never have pursued it if they could have foreseen the consequences. But there was one man who could have called off the attack dogs. It wasn't Alastair Campbell, the chief rottweiler. It was Mr Blair.

Steel Not Seen As Factor in WTC Collapse
The tests found that, typical for construction steel used in the 1960s when the World Trade Center was erected, the steel beams exceeded requirements to bear 36,000 pounds per square inch. Often they were capable of bearing around 42,000 pounds per square inch.

These findings would rule out weak steel as a contributing factor in the towers' collapse.

US Navy's Sonar Is Danger To Sea Life, Judge Rules
The United States Navy has been stopped from testing a powerful sonar system in most of the world's oceans after a federal judge ruled that the booming sounds used to detect enemy submarines could "irreparably harm" whales, dolphins and fish.

US District Judge Elizabeth Laporte ruled in San Francisco on Tuesday that the navy and the National Marine Fisheries Service failed to consider alternatives that could shield whales and other marine life from these loud sounds, which have been compared to standing next to the space shuttle at take-off.
