Thursday 2 pm city hall public hearing on waterfront development plans for OHSU and PDA.
*N. Macadam being "turned into another Pearl District" -- The Low income housingaspect of the proposal that was previoiusly agreed to has been changed to being far less than was agreed to... This will be paid for, not by the owners of the property, who will reap the benefits of the sale of these places, but by we the taxpayer.

*74 million for a tram to OHSU, a tax-exempt "non-profit" corporation with questionable policies on who gets treated there...heavily funded by taxpayers and private foundations.

Far as I can tell, there is a move being made by the Portland Developers Association that has a chance of being opposed by the CIty Council and even possibly Vera. This is one of the biggest issues in the city right now, and even if we can't attend, letters and calls to council members and Katz are essential if it is to be killed rather than passed through. Testimony on Thursday is important, but also it can't be ill-informed ranting. Maybe that's why there has been no effort to post this here....

Oregon, Poor Oregon!
Oregon's official state song ("Oregon, My Oregon") praises the glory of the empire-building that has destroyed the Eden it once was. I humbly submit this poem as the new state song. Right-wingers and left-wing Dems alike are hell-bent on destroying what little is left through more empire-building in the name of "managing" "inevitable" growth. To stop the madness, we need speak out for an economy and mode of living that holds the land and its habitat, flora and fauna as the most sacred manifestations of existence here in Oregon. Comments are welcome.

Americanism and anti-Americanism
"The essential inner contradiction of Americanism consists in its invoking of values such as freedom, human rights, democracy andfree markets while resorting for their enforcement to methods that actually entail in every concrete case subordination to the USA, suspension of international law and human rights, the establishment of politically dependent regimes and monopolistic access of the USA and its allies.."

Gospel According to Bush
Bu$h the Christian? There were and are countless conservative talk show hosts acting like huge bellows pumping hot air onto the flaming wreck of the Clinton presidency. No remark, no split hair, no intended action went unchallenged by the piranhas who smelled Clinton's blood amid the foul excrement afloat in the political septic tank. What greater proof is there of the existence of an ultra conservative right wing media blitz than this? Countless millions of tax payer dollars went down the tubes (septic tank) in an effort to bring to light every detail of Clinton's sordid sex life. Yet Bush can make war on the entire world, invade any sovereign country he feels like, kill thousands of innocent people, spit upon the constitution and shred the bill of rights and in the process turn the entire planet against us. Amazingly, there is nary a word of dissent spoke of it in the corporate media. How peculiar but typically American, in the land of OZ. Aside from other fascist states, this odd behavior occurs nowhere else on earth. The American media is so under the control of those in power that it has utterly abandoned its obligation to the people; it is essentially as fraudulently propagandistic as any state owned newspaper in the world's most oppressive self appointed regimes. What is most amazing about this weird behavior is that Bush is getting away with it; and calling himself a Christian in the process!

Liberia's Taylor Says U.S. Backs His Enemies
President Charles Taylor during an interview on Monday. (photo - Michael Kamber) President Charles Taylor, in an interview, accused the United States today of supporting his rebel enemies and pressed Washington to prove its commitment to Liberia by sending peacekeepers. He also added a surprising coda to his promise to step down, calling his exile a brief "cooling-off period" before a return to Liberian politics.

"My regret is that they never understood me, they never gave me a chance," he said of the Americans. "I'm at a loss. I harbor no anger. I harbor no animosity. I want to work with my people and hope the United States sees me in a different light."

Homemade bomb kills U.S. soldier in Iraq
A U.S. patrol in north Baghdad was hit by a homemade bomb early Monday, taking the life of a soldier in the 1st Armored Division.

In Khadamiya on Monday, plenty of people said more violence would follow if the Americans didn't leave. A civil affairs soldier was shot in the neighborhood June 27 while shopping for DVDs. "We will fight. We will kill them," said Abdul Sada, a Shiite bus driver, who pantomimed chopping off a head. "Our customs don't allow strangers to move around our area." Standing next to Sada, Jafar Ismail said anti-American sentiment was widespread. "It is not Sunni. It is not Shiite. All of Iraq hates the American troops," he said. "If the American soldiers stop near our mosques, they will be shot."

U.S. Falling Into Bin Laden's Trap
bin Laden . . . he's either DEAD, or ALIVE . . . Faced by the growing messes in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Bush administration is trying to emulate its role model, the late, unlamented British Empire, by hiring mercenaries to do the dirty work in Iraq. Washington is offering billions to India and Pakistan to send 15,000 troops each to pacify Iraq's unruly natives. Other nations like Poland, Italy and Bulgaria are being pressured or bribed to send token forces to help pull Bush's chestnuts out of the fire in Iraq. Canada has been browbeaten into sending troops to increasingly dangerous Afghanistan where they have no useful mission other than protecting the widely detested regime of U.S.-installed puppet ruler, Hamid Karzai.
