The Attack Has Been Spectacular
Regardless how anyone frames it, the White House duped us. From "they hate us for our freedoms" to "solid evidence" of Al-Qaeda/Iraq connections, the Administration skirted some issues and manipulated information on others. In short, Bush Inc. lied and pressured others to do the same. The game plan succeeded, however, as polls repeatedly indicated that more than half of all U.S. citizens were consistently conned into believing Iraq was an immediate threat and that Saddam was involved in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Iraqi attacks could signal wide revolt
U.S. troops in Iraq are getting ambushed everywhere and every day — while guarding gas stations, investigating car thefts or on their way to make phone calls home. The number of deaths from hostile fire is on the rise: six Americans were killed in May in enemy attacks, while 16 had died in June as of midnight Saturday.

Private risk analysts are warning of an even chance of Iraq descending into open revolt.

ever wonder where the 'Z' in Pennzoil came from?
By 1955, Zapata was involved in two distinct oil businesses, offshore drilling and land drilling. Business seemed to be running smoothly. Soon, however, the Liedtke brothers began to grow impatient with the control Uncle Walker sought to establish over Zapata. To restore harmony, a series of stock swaps orchestrated by Bush resulted in divided control over Zapata Offshore and Zapata Petroleum. Bush and Uncle Walker won control over the offshore business and the Liedtkes gained control of the original Zapata Petroleum. By 1963, Hugh Liedtke was ready to expand Zapata Petroleum by merging it with the Penn Oil Company. The combined company took the name Pennzoil, with Hugh Liedtke at the helm as president and chief executive officer.

ACTION AGAINST POLICE VIOLENCE, continued, part two
There has been considerable praise for the efforts of the Recall Vera Katz Committee against police violence, and when people are approached and asked to sign the petition, the response is amazingly high. But more volunteer petitioners are needed. We appreciate the volunteers we have, but there are not nearly enough of them. Although people are eager to sign the petition, there has not been a corresponding eagerness to volunteer to circulate petitions.

Ian Masters interviews Nicholas Confessore about the neocon's dream of creating a one party nation, and how this all fits into a bigger picture of shrinking government (except defense and corporate welfare), how Karl Rove and Grover Norquist fit into the picture, etc. Nicholas Confessore is the editor of the Washington Monthly, a highly respected academic journal published by a think-tank with mainstream and conservative board members like Brent Scowcroft. This is not marginal views from the left. These are mainstream views that sharply criticize the total insanity that is the George W. Bush junta.

Responsibility
This is a follow-up piece the deaths of the cyclist at 39th and SE Belmont. The objective is to focus attention on what I perceive is the real issue of the tragedy which is the failure of civil trusties to effectively execute their duty to protect the safety and welfare of the public and the willing acceptance of that failure by politicians, public and the media. Civil authority failed to protect the public, in full knowledge of a dangerous situation, and there is no public out cry but rather public acceptance. The public and media and politicians would rather see the police harass CM rather than collar a dangerous drunk in violation of court orders. Excusing civil authority from their duty to equally protect the rights of all vehicles on the road and failing to press politicians for equal protection is all the same thing because it places lives in danger. To make this perfectly clear: I believe that the rights of all people should be equally ensured regardless of race, sex, political beliefs, transportation choice or any other unique human characteristic. These recent events and the treatment of the story by the media has diminished and drawn attention away from the central question; how did the civil authority fail to protect the public from a known danger in the community? And, how is it possible that the public should permit pubic trustees to ignore their sworn responsibilities?

Bicycles and the Community
The police are not the problem for cyclists because police too little power intellectually or politically to be a problem. In fact, the only true function of the police, aside from protecting and serving, is to respond to external stimuli with force upon the command of some greater authority. When there is no greater authority to direct their activities then civil anarchy rises and Kendra Jackson or some other poor soul dies. Police harrassment is a symptom of the problem but the problem of cyclist safety lies with the reluctanceof politicians and the community in general to recognize bicycles as traffic. As riders, especially as commuters, we are a minority and we need to recognize the basis of the problem and attack that. Yelling at the police makes great television footage but alienates the public from our message. Getting shot by the police makes great television footage and gains sympathy for our cause but it is life threatening. Reaching out to the public, addressing the political forums, and pressing city planning for access can achieve positive change to protect the safety and welfare of cyclists.
