Neither Trump nor the Deep State could not fail to notice that [Maj. Gen. Qasem] Soleimani was the key strategic asset for Iraq to eventually assert control of its oil wealth, while progressively defeating the Wahhabi/Salafist/jihadi galaxy. So he had to go.
For all the rumble surrounding Iraqi commitment to expel US troops and the Iranian pledge to react to the Soleimani assassination at a time of its choosing, there's no way to make the imperial masters listen without a financial hit. Enter the world derivatives market, which every major player knows is a financial WMD. The derivatives are used to drain a trillion dollars a year out of the market in manipulated profits. These profits, of course, are protected under the "too big to prosecute" doctrine. It's all obviously parasitic and illegal. The beauty is it can be turned into a nuclear option against the imperial masters. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) counts about $600 billion in total derivatives. Not really. Swiss sources say there are at least 1.2 quadrillion with some placing it at 2.5 quadrillion. That would imply a derivatives market 28 times the world's GDP. On Hormuz, the shortage of 22% of the world oil supply simply could not be papered over. It would detonate a collapse and cause a market crash infinitely worse than 1933 Weimar Germany. So Trump threatening to destroy 52 Iranian sites - including priceless cultural heritage - is a bluff.

The result of the whole game is an unproductive permanent income - a tribute - for the managers and shareholders of the financial institutions, while all other players are gradually driven into bankruptcy. And yet today, on closer inspection, the supposedly invincible opponent stands on feet of clay. The global tribute system only works because elected governments channel our tax money through countless open and hidden channels into the hands of the richest one percent and in the end convince us that it is all based on "market success". The first step to overcoming this system is to bring it into the public eye, to challenge its legitimacy and make it the subject of political debate.
Back in September, TV network OAN filed a lawsuit against MSNBC host Rachel Maddow for the time the host said that OAN "really, literally is paid Russian propaganda."
Except Maddow, likely still upset from spending 3 years trying to promulgate a Russian hoax that didn't exist, didn't quite get her facts straight. Now, Maddow finds herself having to come up with a defense for her statement in court. Her lawyers argued in a recent motion that "... the liberal host was clearly offering up her 'own unique expression' of her views to capture what she saw as the 'ridiculous' nature of the undisputed facts. Her comment, therefore, is a quintessential statement 'of rhetorical hyperbole, incapable of being proved true or false."
Luis Buñuel's surrealist film 'The Exterminating Angel' (1962) is many things to many people. The eye of the bewildered beholder, beholden to his or her personal perspective, conditions the response. The plot is straightforward: a small coterie of wealthy Mexicans convene for a dinner party, only to find that they cannot leave the party — literally. There is no apparent physical impediment. Nothing visual blocks their exodus. Rather it is a kind of psychic inanition that collapses their will to leave. As each guest variously attempts to cross the threshold, a thought pops into his or her head rationalizing a reason to stay. A coffee, breakfast, an argument, a love tryst. It makes no difference. No one leaves. These haut monde citizens are quite conscious of their predicament, but consciousness of the problem is no solution. It is an ingenious plot; sinfully simple, bafflingly motiveless.
The liberal class practices a kind of deliberate cognitive dissonance despite having informed opinion at their fingertips. So we are left with an effete professional class of lip-sync liberals who repeat the platitudes of friendly fascism before retiring back to their bunkers of creature comforts
CtF [Clearing the FOG]: Putting aside the Democratic Party, how do you see the potential for the Left movement awakening to anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist thinking?
CH [Chris Hedges]: I don't know that the Left is organized. I don't know that it has yet offered a strong alternative vision to the mainstream. I think it's often divided by identity politics without grasping that the fundamental issue is class. This is class warfare and as Warren Buffett has correctly said, his side is winning. We also have to make it clear that they have not only marginalized us but cut down the spaces by which we can communicate. That's why I'm on RT. What I do on RT should be on a functioning public broadcasting system, but the public broadcasting system, in particular PBS, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Koch brothers. If you go back to the 70s, you could see Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Angela Davis, and all sorts of people who were not beholden to institutions or to corporations offering a critique of power. The last national show that we had that critiqued power is Bill Moyers' show, which is now off the air and in the end, was funded through a private foundation. All of those sentiments are on the rise, but it is yet to be translated into a political movement. And if there are uprisings without that kind of vision and focus, then the ruling elites can easily decapitate them.
Former US President Barack Obama is now in severe legal jeopardy, because the Russiagate investigation has turned 180 degrees; and he, instead of the current President, Donald Trump, is in its cross-hairs.

The U.S. military-industrial-congressional triangle (MIC) is comprised of the Pentagon, the headquarters of the U.S. Armed Forces; industry, the corporations that sell goods and services to the Pentagon and allied governments; and U.S. Congress, which authorizes funding for the Pentagon to purchase industry's goods and services. The MIC is insulated. It is entirely removed from the will of the U.S. public; the public elects the congressional side of the triangle, but industry corrupts Congress (via, for example, campaign finance, strategic allocation of manufacturing plants, think tank narratives, and forceful lobbyists), neutralizing the prospects of redress or the attainment of a republic. Last week at Baghdad International Airport, the U.S. military, under the direction of former Raytheon executive (current Secretary of War) Mark Esper, assassinated another human, Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. Also killed in the airstrike were members of Kata'ib Hezbollah, a paramilitary organization operating as part of the Popular Mobilization Forces, which are part of the overall Iraqi state security apparatus. This follows U.S. airstrikes against Kata'ib Hezbollah in eastern Syria and Western Iraq on Sunday, December 29. Global citizens add these deaths to the hundreds of thousands who have died in the post-9.11 wars.

Private charity is the result of neoliberalism. Real services of general interest need global solutions... Ensuring that school buildings and education are intact is not a private responsibility, but a public one. It would be a mistake not to always insist on this public responsibility. Only in this way can human rights be realized...
The global stands in relation to the local. For example, in order to be able to carry out meaningful health prevention, local contexts need not only their own decision-making powers, but also the appropriate resources... Common goods can only be realized outside the sphere of capitalist economics.

The October decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to withdraw American troops from northeastern Syria did not only precipitate the Turkish offensive, codenamed 'Operation Peace Spring', into Kurdish-held territory which followed. It also sparked an outcry of hysteria from much of the so-called "left" that has been deeply divided during the 8-year long conflict over its Kurdish question. Despite the fact that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were objectively a U.S. proxy army before they were "abandoned" by Washington to face an assault by its NATO ally, the ostensibly "progressive" politics of the mostly-Kurdish militants duped many self-identified people on the left into supporting them as the best option between terrorists and a "regime." Apparently, everyone on earth except for the Kurds and their 'humanitarian interventionist' supporters saw this "betrayal" coming, which speaks to the essential naiveté of such amateurish politics. However, there is a historical basis to this political tendency that should be interrogated if a lesson is to be learned by those misguided by it.

The break with the old neoliberal and new authoritarian policies becomes a necessity in the face of the multiple crisis. An impending economic slump would exacerbate this situation. The "middle way" of post-ideological openness and left-wing liberal criticism is becoming powerless. Even those who advocate the preservation of liberal civil liberties and minimum standards of solidary living must take a stand against authoritarianism and neoliberalism, i.e. for a more radical left course. Now is the moment of decision, at a time of interregnum, when different developments are still possible. A socialist project is necessary in view of the danger of barbarism.
OK, we need to talk about fascism. Not just any kind of fascism. A particularly insidious kind of fascism. No, not the fascism of the early 20th Century. Not Mussolini's National Fascist Party. Not Hitler's NSDAP. Not Francoist fascism or any other kind of organized fascist movement or party. Not even the dreaded Tiki-torch Nazis.
It's the other kind of fascism we need to talk about. The kind that doesn't come goose-stepping up the street waving big neo-Nazi flags. The kind we don't recognize when we're looking right at it. It doesn't look like fascism to us. Fascism only looks like fascism when you're standing outside of it, or looking back at it. When you are in it, fascism just looks like "normality," like "reality," like "just the way it is." We (i.e., Americans, Brits, Europeans, and other citizens of the global capitalist empire) get up in the morning, go to work, shop, pay the interest on our debts, and otherwise obey the laws and conform to the mores of a system of power that has murdered countless millions of people in pursuit of global-hegemonic dominance. It has perpetrated numerous wars of aggression. Its military occupies most of the planet. Its Intelligence agencies (i.e., secret police) operate a worldwide surveillance apparatus that can identify, target, and eliminate anyone, anywhere, often by remote control. Its propaganda network never sleeps, nor is there any real way to escape its constant emotional and ideological conditioning.

![]() Doug Rediker, former U.S. representative to IMF executive board : [on global / IMF national debts and loans] "Borrowing has become a 'costless' exercise in recent decades, where we've seen that: no longer will countries borrow on the expectation that they will repay. They borrow on the expectation that they will refinance. And in a zero, or low, or negative interest rate environment, that's a costless exercise. You just borrow and, you're actually getting paid (in Germany's case) for the privilege of borrowing. So that's a great thing; but that's not necessarily going to last forever, in fact I would argue it's impossible to believe it's going to last forever. At some point, these low/absurdly low and negative interest rate borrowing costs are going to turn around. And since you're not borrowing on the basis of an ability to repay, rather on the ability to refinance, when those refinancing costs go up: where's the money coming from?"
ELKINS—Local resident Phil Hudok has received an arbitration award ordering the federal government to provide remedy and relief. Hudok, of Huttonsville, along with four complainants, demanded that the federal government provide Constitutional authority for 573 claims of "interface with the people," and when the federal government failed to produce the requested information, the Constitution was established as a breached contract. The claimants offered a new contract to the federal government, which was accepted and included all Americans as beneficiaries.

When in the early 1970s an Italian right-wing journalist told me about a secret army training in Italy's mountains, I scoffed at first thinking he was repeating a rumor picked up from some scoop-obsessed reporter. He gave me the name of a member of that secret army who would talk with me.

Well, it looks like we've somehow managed to survive another year of diabolical Putin-Nazi attacks on democracy. It was touch-and-go there for a while, especially coming down the home stretch, what with Jeremy Corbyn's desperate attempt to overthrow the UK government, construct a British version of Auschwitz, and start rounding up and mass-murdering the Jews. That was certainly pretty scary ... but then, the whole year was pretty scary. The horror began promptly in early January, when Rachel Maddow revealed that Putin was projecting words out of Trump's mouth in real-time; i.e., literally using Trump's head like a puppet, or one of those Mission Impossible masks. And that was just the tip of the iceberg, as, despite the best efforts of Integrity Initiative, Bellingcat, and other such establishment psyops, Internet-censoring sites like NewsGuard, and an army of mass hysteria generators, Putin's legion of Russian "influencers" was continuing to maliciously influence Americans, who were probably also still under attack by brain-eating Russian-Cubano crickets!
I was recently starting an overnight hospital shift, when I received a text from a medical colleague working in a hospital in New York: "The NYPD are here harassing a gunshot wound victim who is a minor with no family present [... ] So much so that the family of the patient next door came to us complaining about how they were manipulating [the patient] and twisting his words."
What are police officers—members of a racist, murderous institution founded on the legacy of slave patrols—doing anywhere near an institution whose one, singularly proposed, job is ostensibly to be addressing the health and well-being of an individual? I am a physician who went into the medical field to better the well being of the public. As I see increasing police presence in our hospitals, health clinics, schools, subways, it leads me to ask the question: Are the police good for our health?
Human beings are collaborative, interdependent animals. Much of the good and the bad that we as a species have created has been achieved through cooperation on both small and grand scales. The simple, primary thesis of this essay is that private interests have effectively organized themselves throughout the complete fabric of modern society to both control that society in order to extract value from it and, most importantly, to maintain continuous power over it. I call this by now global system of surreptitious governance: Neopatrimonial Factionalism (NF). It is the private "steerage" system behind the public formalities of "democracy" "party" "state" "nation" "citizenry" "republic" or even "politics" as such. It is the partial realization of the ancient argument of Thrasymachus that the "stronger" decides what is "just". And that this overwhelming strength of both action and decision is ultimately derived from the effective organization and coordination of a relatively vast amount of people whose somewhat covert membership cuts across class, race, ethnicity, gender and ideology.

We are again reaching the point in the business cycle known as "peak debt," when debts have compounded to the point that their cumulative total cannot be paid. Student debt, credit card debt, auto loans, business debt and sovereign debt are all higher than they have ever been. As economist Michael Hudson writes in his provocative 2018 book, "... and forgive them their debts," debts that can't be paid won't be paid. The question, he says, is how they won't be paid.
Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan called Paul Volcker "the most effective chairman in the history of the Federal Reserve." But while Volcker, who passed away Dec. 8 at age 92, probably did have the greatest historical impact of any Fed chairman, his legacy is, at best, controversial.
Less discussed was Volcker's role at the behest of President Richard Nixon in taking the dollar off the gold standard, which he called "the single most important event of his career." He evidently intended for another form of stable exchange system to replace the Bretton Woods system it destroyed, but that did not happen. Instead, freeing the dollar from gold unleashed an unaccountable central banking system that went wild printing money for the benefit of private Wall Street and London financial interests. The power to create money can be a good and necessary tool in the hands of benevolent leaders working on behalf of the people and the economy. But like with the Sorcerer's Apprentice in Disney's "Fantasia," if it falls in the wrong hands, it can wreak havoc on the world. Unfortunately for Volcker's legacy and the well-being of the rest of us, his signature policies led to the devastation of the American working class in the 1980s and ultimately set the stage for the 2008 global financial crisis.

Douglas Valentine is an investigator and author with a rare and tenacious approach toward research. His writing results in uniquely incisive and revealing books on the dark side of U.S. intelligence activities and the National Security State. His latest book, 'The CIA as Organized Crime: How Illegal Operations Corrupt America and the World', draws parallels between CIA operations in Vietnam as exposed in his well-known 1990 book, 'The Phoenix Program: America's Use of Terror in Vietnam'—and recent/current operations in Afghanistan, El Salvador, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and elsewhere. In the following interview, Valentine reflects on a variety of issues including the Phoenix Program, plausible deniability, paramilitary wars, drug trafficking, sabotage, blackmail, propaganda, Operation GLADIO, class interests of the CIA establishment, Trump, the Mueller Report and the Bidens.

The capitalist bourgeoisie needs and defends democracy as a form of social freedom only as long as it is useful to its own class rule. Their understanding of democracy & freedom is structurally limited - only he is a full-fledged human being who is also a citizen of property. The real barriers of bourgeois democracy must be recognized & overcome. Learning from O Canada and imitating the 26 comunity centers in Vancouver could give us new perspectives on democracy & freedom.

Russiagate, Ukrainegate and impeachment aren't conspicuously economic issues. But they are, to a large extent, class issues. They are inside-the-beltway dramas about foreign policy arcana that are important to people who see their lots tied in one way or another to the established order. This includes, by degree, those of us who would like to make room for outside-the-beltway concerns like ending militarism, solving environmental crises, providing meaningful employment for all who want it and creating functioning healthcare and educational systems.
In the 1920s, the influential American intellectual Walter Lippman argued that the average person was incapable of seeing or understanding the world clearly and needed to be guided by experts behind the social curtain. In a number of books he laid out the theoretical foundations for the practical work of Edward Bernays, who developed "public relations" (aka propaganda) to carry out this task for the ruling elites. Bernays had honed his skills while working as a propagandist for the United States during World War I, and after the war he set himself up as a public relations counselor in New York City.
There is a fascinating exchange at the beginning of Adam Curtis's documentary, 'The Century of Self', where Bernays, then nearly 100 years old but still very sharp, reveals his manipulative mindset and that of so many of those who have followed in his wake. He says the reason he couldn't call his new business "propaganda" was because the Germans had given propaganda a "bad name," and so he came up with the euphemism "public relations." He then adds that "if you could use it [i.e. propaganda] for war, you certainly could use it for peace." Of course, he never used PR for peace but just to manipulate public opinion (he helped engineer the CIA coup against the democratically elected Arbenz government in Guatemala in 1954 with fake news broadcasts). He says "the Germans gave propaganda a bad name," not Bernays and the United States with their vast campaign of lies, mainly aimed at the American people to get their support for going to a war they opposed (think weapons of mass destruction). As Bernays has said in his book, Propaganda, "The American motion picture is the greatest unconscious carrier of propaganda in the world today."

It is destined to go down as one of the greatest journalistic and regulatory failures of our time - the lack of serious attention by investigative business reporters and the U.S. Department of Justice to the glaring fact that the largest Wall Street banks continue to trade their own and each other's bank stocks in their own Dark Pools.
Dark Pools function as unregulated stock exchanges inside the bowels of the largest Wall Street banks. Making the situation even more dicey, some of the big banks own more than one Dark Pool, raising the possibility that there could be cross-trading between those pools to artificially inflate or depress stock prices. After being repeatedly charged with collusion, should global banks be allowed to team up on the darkest of trading markets, i.e., Dark Pools? Should felon banks like Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase be allowed to trade the stocks of their own bank? Should any Wall Street bank be allowed to trade its own stock in darkness?
