The Dictatorsbhip of Corporations
Why do the majority of politicians so often make decisions against the public interest and in favor of industry? A new quality of lobbyism arose on account of the dramatically stronger market- and financial power of companies. I sound the alarm. The power relations in our society are shifting endangering democracy, the market economy, our self-determination, and our freedom.
"A great setback...Wall Street won; normal persons are losers" admitted the head of the CFBB.

Central Banks Have Gone Rogue, Putting Us All At Risk
The largest single players (excluding institutions such as Blackrock and Vanguard which are composed of multiple investors) in global equity markets are now thought to be central banks themselves. An estimated 30 to 40 central banks are invested in the stock market, either directly or through their investment vehicles (sovereign wealth funds).

Central banks, which create fiat money out of thin air and for whom 'acquisition cost' is a meaningless term, are increasingly nationalizing the equity capital markets. Or at least they would be nationalizing equities, if they were actually "national" central banks. But the Swiss National Bank, the biggest single player in this game, is 48 percent privately owned, and most central banks have declared their independence from their governments. They march to the drums not of government but of private industry.

'Intersectionality': Set Theory of the Left
Intersectionality, far from having an inclusionary effect, actually excludes many, many people due to characteristics in them judged unwelcome. Intersectionality as a political strategy thus thwarts the objective of forming a large enough coalition capable of winning and effectively wielding political power.

Why is this idea of intersectionality, which is logically flawed on its face, so prevalent among various leftist factions and "progressives"? There are two likely possibilities, in my view:

1) The Left is being deliberately fractured by government and corporate policies or

2) The Left is exhibiting a sort of schizophrenic break with reality induced by both a perpetual inability to obtain economic and social relief from neoliberalism and the election of Donald Trump.

For example, a common refrain among the intersectionalist left is that Trump won the 2016 election due to the racism of white people, working-class whites in particular, and therefore the set we call working-class whites has nothing to bring to the intersection, so to speak. It can be ignored as a potential ally in the struggle against neoliberalism. However, the set of all working-class white people is not the same as what we find at the intersection of the set of working-class white people and the set of racists. By conflating the two sets, the intersectionalists are

1) excluding a large set of people that have been crushed by neoliberalism and

2) committing themselves to a much diminished coalition.

7 NYPD Officers Arrested In Connection With Prostitution And Narcotics Ring
Updated 47 mins ago

QUEENS, New York City (WABC) --

Seven members of the NYPD were arrested Wednesday in connection with a prostitution and narcotics case dating back to 2015.

The suspects -- three sergeants, two detectives and two officers -- were reportedly based in Queens and Brooklyn were believed to be providing protection for the operation of the prostitution and gambling ring in the same boroughs.

At least two NYPD detectives were placed on modified duty as a result of the investigation

The department released the following statement:

"Today, those who swore an oath and then betrayed it have felt the consequences of that infidelity. The people of this Department are rightly held to the highest standard, and should they fail to meet it, the penalty will be swift and severe. I thank Deputy Commissioner Joseph Reznick for the thorough investigation performed by the Internal Affairs Bureau, in partnership with the Queens District Attorney's Office, in rooting out this illicit activity. His unit initiated this probe and in doing so, has sent a clear message: there is no place in the NYPD for criminal or unethical behavior."

Cheney & Giuliani: First Government Officials To Dismiss Controlled Demolition On 9/11
Examination of the record shows that officials in at least three government agencies responsible for responding to the attacks—the White House, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the New York City Fire Department (FDNY)—said they suspected that the World Trade Center buildings had been brought down with explosives. In addition, many individuals in the news media commented throughout the morning of September 11th, 2001 that explosives appeared to be involved.

Vice President Dick Cheney and New York City's Mayor Rudolph Giuliani each publicly dismissed the notion of controlled demolition of the WTC towers within hours after the event. Jerome Hauer, a security consultant who worked for Kroll Associates and was formerly Mayor Giuliani's Director of NYC's Office of Emergency Management, appeared on CBS News with Dan Rather (who like many other television anchors and reporters speculated that the buildings had come down due to explosives) the morning of 9/11 saying "velocity of the plane" and "intense heat" probably "weakened the structure; I think it was simply the planes hitting the buildings and causing the collapse."

The Fakest Fake News: The U.S. Government’s 9/11 Conspiracy Theory
The official version of the attacks of 9/11 is fake news at its worst. It is a story told for dunces.

A Review of 9/11Unmasked: An International Review Panel Investigation by David Ray Griffin and Elizabeth Woodworth

September 10th, 2018

If you want to fathom today's world, absolutely nothing is more important than to understand the truth about the attacks of September 11, 2001. This is the definitive book on the subject.

For seventeen years we have been subjected to an onslaught of U.S. government and corporate media propaganda about 9/11 that has been used to support the "war on terror" that has resulted in millions of deaths around the world. It has been used as a pretext to attack nations throughout the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa. It has led to a great increase in Islamophobia since Muslims were accused of being responsible for the attacks. It has led to a crackdown on civil liberties in the United States, the exponential growth of a vast and costly national security apparatus, the spreading of fear and anxiety on a great scale, and a state of permanent war that is pushing the world toward a nuclear confrontation. And much, much more.

The Original 9/11: 45 Years After Pinochet's Coup
September 11, 2018

---

On this day in 1973 the democratically elected president of Chile, Salvador Allende, was overthrown by General Augusto Pinochet. In the aftermath, 3000 leftists were murdered, tens of thousands tortured and hundreds of thousands driven from the country.

Since it doesn't serve to justify further domination by the powerful few in the Canadian media will commemorate the 'original 9/11'. Even fewer will recognize Canada's role in the US backed coup.

The Pierre Trudeau government was hostile to Allende's elected government. In 1964 Eduardo Frei defeated the openly Marxist Allende in presidential elections. Worried about growing support for socialism, Ottawa gave $8.6 million to Frei's Chile, its first aid to a South American country. When Allende won the next election Canadian assistance disappeared. Export Development Canada (EDC) also refused to finance Canadian exports to Chile, which contributed to a reduction in trade between the two countries. This suspension of EDC credits led Chile's Minister of Finance to criticize Canada's "banker's attitude".But suspending bilateral assistance and export insurance was not enough. In 1972 Ottawa joined Washington in voting to cut off all money from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to the Chilean government.(When Allende was first elected western banks, including Canada's, withdrew from Chile.)

Explanation Of The Evidence At The Pentagon On 9/11
Wayne Coste's epic analysis of the evidence at the Pentagon (originally a 5hr 40 min video Powerpoint) is now available in easily digested chapter-by-chapter form narrated by David Chandler.

Wayne started this project when he was on the other side of the fence, convinced that no plane hit the Pentagon. He was working on a compilation to prove that case and ended up convincing himself otherwise. This represents a massive effort and deserves careful consideration and study.

I was reflecting recently on something Barbara Honegger pointed out. She said the Pentagon was the most important piece of the 9/11 operation, from the perpetrator's point of view, because an attack on the military turned this from a mere crime to an act of war, justifying military retaliation. It does not follow, however, that the evidence we need for proving government involvement is at the Pentagon. The evidence we need to show government complicity is at the World Trade Center. All that needed to be done at the Pentagon was to hit it with something...anything.

Ramming a plane into the Pentagon did not require any kind of fancy deception. The more blatant the better. If shrouding it in secrecy and false speculation helped throw the dissenters into disarray, all the better. What is required of the 9/11 Truth Movement is a mature assessment of the evidence...all of the evidence. There is no win in finding some spectacular deception. The "win" is in seeing the truth of the matter with clear eyes.

Is this the official story? Not at all. The official story is we were attacked by Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda. That is certainly false. Big planes hit the WTC, a big plane hit the Pentagon. That's what the evidence shows, and a clear look at the evidence is what provides a path out of the wilderness for the 9/11 Truth Movement.

An Ideology Of Self-Righteousness
On the afternoon of September 11, 2001 I found myself in Greenwich Village's Washington Square Park. A smoky haze from the morning's destruction a few blocks south hung in the air. The smell reminded me of a restaurant fire. My friend and I were two of maybe a thousand people in the park. Some were singing and playing musical instruments. Others were trying to contact family or friends. Some were smoking weed and drinking beer. The air was abuzz with hundreds of conversations. The one nearest me was between three men. After a few minutes, one offered me a hit from the joint they were smoking. I accepted his offer and listened while they discussed the burning towers and what to do with terrorists. Their consensus was simple: the US and other western nations should colonize the places terrorists came from and teach them how to be "civilized." To say the least, this consensus startled me, especially given that the men were all African-American and their ancestors had been the subject of one of western civilization's worst attempts to civilize a people.

The U.S. Military Is Winning The Global War On Terror. No, Really, It Is!
Decades after the end of the Vietnam War, the U.S. military has finally solved the conundrum of how to "out-guerrilla the guerrilla." And it couldn't have been simpler. You just adopt the same definition of victory. As a result, a conventional army -- at least the U.S. military -- now loses only if it stops fighting. So long as unaccountable commanders wage benchmark-free wars without congressional constraint, the United States simply cannot lose. You can't argue with the math.

The United States has not won a major conflict since 1945; has a trillion-dollar national security budget; has had 17 military commanders in the last 17 years in Afghanistan, a country plagued by 23,744 "security incidents" (the most ever recorded) in 2017 alone; has spent around $3 trillion, primarily on that war and the rest of the war on terror, including the ongoing conflict in Iraq, which then-defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld swore, in 2002, would be over in only "five days or five weeks or five months," but where approximately 5,000 U.S. troops remain today; and yet 74% of the American people still express high confidence in the U.S. military.

How Bill Clinton Paved the Way for Trump's War on Immigrants
Sep 07, 2018

---
Then President-Elect Bill Clinton in 1992. (Mark Reinstein / AP)
---

This week, the Department of Homeland Security proposed a new regulation that would allow U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain migrant children and their parents indefinitely, upending 20 years of legal precedent. Critics have decried the sadism of such a proposal, but few have acknowledged how multiple Democratic administrations helped pave the way for the Trump administration's violence and cruelty. In the latest installment of Scheer Intelligence, immigration attorney Helen Sklar reminds us that it was President Bill Clinton who first branded immigrants without the necessary documentation an "unlawful presence in the U.S."

The result, decades later, is that many in Congress "do not want to see the Mexican population in this country documented." As Sklar tells Truthdig's Robert Scheer, "Whether it's based on labor interests and the extent to which people's undocumented status could be exploited in the workplace ... there's a racial animus that motivates the desire for Mexicans not to be able to regularize their status."

Ultimately, Clinton's elimination of laws that made it easier for Mexican immigrants to establish permanent legal status has enabled Trump to separate families at the border, an act Sklar abhors. While she acknowledges certain historical parallels, Sklar admits this "singling out of children, and making them orphans" is unlike anything she has ever seen. As of Aug. 31, as many as 500 minors remain separated from their parents, victims of the administration's "zero tolerance" policy.

Dallas PD Officer Enters Her Neighbor's Apartment, Fatally Shoots Man
Uniformed, off-duty officer called police, saying she shot a man after she entered a neighbor's apartment by mistake
Botham Shem Jean, 26, was transported to a hospital where he died
Police issue manslaughter warrant against officer; Chief says blood will be drawn from officer to test for drugs/alcohol.

At some point during the interaction between Jean and the officer, she fired her weapon, hitting him, police said.

The officer then called 911 to report an officer-involved shooting — minutes later, Hall said, officers and EMS with Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived and began to treat the victim. Jean was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

In an interview from New York Friday, Allison Jean, Botham's mother, questioned how someone could walk into an apartment and not know they were in someone else's home. "Somebody has to be crazy not to realize that they walked into the wrong apartment. He's a bachelor. Things are different inside," Jean said. "I don't want to judge her. We are Christians. We forgive. But I need to look into her eyes and ask her why did she do that to my son. She took away my heart. My soul. He didn't deserve to die. The explanation does not make sense."

Resident Tomiya Melvin said the hallways in the building all look the same so it could be a simple misunderstanding, but that, of course, she never expected anything like this to happen.

A manslaughter warrant is expected to be issued for the white female officer. Dallas Chief of Police U. Renee Hall announced the warrant during a news conference early Friday afternoon and added that a blood sample will be drawn from the officer to test for drugs and/or alcohol.

The Party Is Dead; Long Live The Party — That Vulgar Bourgeois Reformism
One quarter of American workers get no vacation time a year. None. Nada. A vast 63 percent don't have $500 saved for an emergency, let alone anything so exotic as a vacation. Ten percent never leave their state. Ever. Not even to the fair Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, where they might have faintly approximated the glories of Venice, that cradle of Italian statehood. See that luminous city of lit gondolas erected on a swampland as a last resort against the uncultivated hordes. No, they've not even got enough money to afford a simulacrum of a real wonder.

The liberal class has died and become a front for the zombie banks that care nothing for the working class. The narcotic of financialization has rent Wall Street from Main Street, setting the latter adrift, rudderless in the sea of indifferent politicians. Witnesses to the machinations of capital have been calling for reform since Vladimir Lenin broke with Karl Kautsky and his desire for "vulgar bourgeois reformism." The Democratic Party cannot and should not and will not be saved or ressurrected or reborn. Martin Luther King, Jr. understood as much when he said, "A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death." He was persona non grata among Democrats for such opinions. Quetzal Cáceres nicely covers the abyssal depths of the Democratic Party and why switching it up is not a creditable platform.

From false flag attacks to dehumanization of the "enemy," here are all the examples you'll need to help debunk a century of war lies.

The Imperial Anatomy of Al-Qaeda: The CIA's Drug-Running Terrorists and the Arc of Crisis
As the anniversary of 9/11 nears, and the war on terror continues to be waged and grows in ferocity and geography, it seems all the more imperative to return to the events of that fateful September morning and re-examine the reasons for war and the nature of the stated culprit, Al-Qaeda.

The events of 9/11 pervade the American and indeed the world imagination as an historical myth. The events of that day and those leading up to it remain largely unknown and little understood by the general public, apart from the disturbing images repeated ad nauseam in the media. The facts and troubled truths of that day are lost in the folklore of the 9/11 myth: that the largest attack carried out on American ground was orchestrated by 19 Muslims armed with box cutters and urged on by religious fundamentalism, all under the direction of Osama bin Laden, the leader of a global terrorist network called al-Qaeda, based out of a cave in Afghanistan.

The myth sweeps aside the facts and complex nature of terror, al-Qaeda, the American empire and literally defies the laws of physics. As John F. Kennedy once said, "The greatest enemy of the truth is not the lie - deliberate, contrived, and dishonest - but the myth - persistent, pervasive, and unrealistic."

This three-part series on "The Imperial Anatomy of Al-Qaeda" examines the geopolitical historical origins and nature of what we today know as al-Qaeda, which is in fact an Anglo-American intelligence network of terrorist assets used to advance American and NATO imperial objectives in various regions around the world.

Part 1 examines the origins of the intelligence network known as the Safari Club, which financed and organized an international conglomerate of terrorists, the CIA's role in the global drug trade, the emergence of the Taliban and the origins of al-Qaeda.

CNN Anchor: "Don't Denigrate Our Reporting".
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnC0seSAYSg

CNN, the multibillion-dollar media network, had the guts to post ^ this video under their own account name on YouTube.

It is an interview of former governor John Sununu (a Cuban-born Palestinian-American who served as the 75th Governor of New Hampshire and later White House Chief of Staff under President George H. W. Bush), by CNN's Alisyn Camerota, who insists that her network's reportage of the White House's apparent unwillingness to issue official statements on the recent passing of Sen. John McCain "a truism" and was not to be doubted or called into question.

Sununu, when repeatedly asked about and pressed by Camerota on this tp[oc during the latter half of the interview, calmly states that he is only there being interviewed (as he'd been asked from the outset) to reflect on the life and career of Senator McCain.

Camerota sternly served the former governor with an explicit warning: "Don't denigrate our reporting." She imperiously continues to ask her program guest to genuflect and kowtow at the altar of CNN's indisputable "fact" journalism until the end of the 9-minute segment.

Glenn Greenwald: The Bane Of Their [Democrats' / U.S. Corporate Media's] Resistance
Greenwald, a former lawyer who, in 2013, was one of the reporters for a Pulitzer Prize-winning series in the Guardian on Edward Snowden's disclosures about the National Security Agency, is a longtime critic, from the left, of centrist and liberal policymakers and pundits. During the past two years, he has further exiled himself from the mainstream American left by responding with skepticism and disdain to reports of Russian government interference in the 2016 Presidential election. On Twitter, where he has nearly a million followers, and at the Intercept, the news Web site that he co-founded five years ago, and as a frequent guest on "Democracy Now!," the daily progressive radio and TV broadcast, Greenwald has argued that the available evidence concerning Russian activity has indicated nothing especially untoward; he has declared that those who claim otherwise are in denial about the ineptitude of the Democrats and of Hillary Clinton, and are sometimes prone to McCarthyite hysteria. These arguments, underpinned by a distaste for banal political opinions and a profound distrust of American institutions—including the C.I.A., the F.B.I., and Rachel Maddow—have put an end to his appearances on MSNBC, where he considers himself now banned, but they have given him a place on Tucker Carlson's show, on Fox News, and in Tennys Sandgren's Twitter feed.

CNN Refuses to Comment After Lying About A Key Claim In Its Blockbuster Cohen Story
CNN's blockbuster July 26 story - that Michael Cohen intended to tell Special Counsel Robert Mueller that he was present when Donald Trump was told in advance about his son's Trump Tower meeting with various Russians - includes a key statement about its sourcing that credible reporting now suggests was designed to have misled its audience. Yet CNN simply refuses to address the serious ethical and journalistic questions raised about its conduct.

The substance of the CNN story itself regarding Cohen - which made headline news all over all the world and which CNN hyped as a "bombshell" - has now been retracted by other news outlets that originally purported to "confirm" CNN's story. That's because the anonymous source for this confirmation, Cohen lawyer Lanny Davis, now admits that, in essence, his "confirmation" was false. As a result, both the Washington Post and the NY Post outed Davis as their anonymous source and then effectively retracted their stories "confirming" parts of CNN's report.

CNN, however, has retracted nothing. All inquiries to the network are directed to a corporate spokesperson, who simply says: "We stand by our story, and are confident in our reporting of it." A newsletter sent Sunday night from CNN's two media reporters, Brian Stelter and Oliver Darcy, contained the same corporate language, but addressed none of the questions raised about CNN's report.

Is Shocking People Revolutionary? Crypto Romanticism and Its New Left Inheritors
The New Left in the US understands that it must reach sectors of the population that are not on board with its romantic roots. For almost 50 years the New Left has ignored its working class and dismissed them as stupid, bought off, simpletons and Archie Bunkers. What is its strategy? To shock people. So, by the multiplication of half shaved - fluorescent colored hair, body piercings and tattoos along with compulsive black attire, it tells the authorities and mainstream Americans to drop dead. The problem, however in the case of the working class, is that you are telling the same people you need to make a revolution with to drop dead. It would be naïve to think that working-class people in the United States, at least in their thirties do not also color their hair, have tattoos and more. However, the working class is also composed of people in their 40's, 50's and 60's who are still working, have the power to stop capitalism with strikes and boycotts, and they don't particularly like all the New Left garb.

On the one hand New Lefters think appearances are phony and don't really matter. In true romantic style, what is of substance to them is an inner essence beyond those appearances. But on the other hand, in trying so hard to rebel against traditional appearances they develop a new set of counter cultural appearances that they work very hard to maintain, scrupulously crafting the appearance that "appearances don't matter".

I say the desire to shock people by appearances is not a desire to extend and move people to join in a common project. Rather it is a haughty, in-your-face "we don't give a shit what you think" stance.

Promote Public Housing!
A basic principle of the market economy is that the market only reacts to solvent demand, not to needs. If a need is not reflected in a solvent demand, the market simply does not react. Expanding the supply of affordable housing is key, not subject promotion. The funds expended in subject-promotion land directly in the pockets of real estate owners. Renouncing on any political intervention would be a market-radical and nihilist answer to the housing crisis.

Former CIA Director John Brennan’s brief for dismantling democracy
18 August 2018

Following Trump's decision Wednesday to revoke John Brennan's security clearance, the former CIA chief has emerged as the chief spokesman of the anti-Trump faction of the ruling class. It is an altogether fitting position. Brennan embodies the criminality and authoritarian disposition of the military-intelligence apparatus, which is the driving force behind the opposition within the state to the Trump administration.

While Trump is seeking to develop a framework for authoritarian rule—including the cultivation of far-right and fascistic forces based on anti-immigrant chauvinism—there is not an ounce of democratic content in the campaign of his critics within the state and political establishment. In the name of opposing Trump—and the supposed Russian plot that sustains him—they are developing their own arguments for dictatorship.

This is the significance of Brennan's column, "President Trump's claims of no collusion are hogwash," published in the print edition of the New York Times on Friday. The pages of the Times were turned over to Brennan by James Bennet, the newspaper's highly-connected editorial page editor, brother of right-wing Democratic Senator Michael Bennet and son of Douglas Bennet, a former top State Department official with CIA connections.

The Anti-President
The U.S., with 900 military bases around the world, is now a endless machine for war profiteering and endless war itself. Simultaneously a hyper Imperialist machine directed toward global hegemony. Domestically it is a McCarthyesque empire of propaganda and censorship and mass incarceration. On both fronts it is a machine for channelling money directly to the ruling class.

The curious exaggerated response in the U.S. to the Trump presidency is understood, partly, by the failure of previous conflicts and even by 9/11, to produce a sense of national regeneration in the usually willing masses. No amount of revisionist history about Vietnam or Korea produced a real national sense of military purpose. Grenada and Somalia just didn't, frankly, kill enough people. This is a Puritan nation that has never left its roots in blood atonement. Organized corporate owned sports provides only a limited refuge from the crushing economic reality. Only today, I think, there is-either by accident or design — a manufactured dream. The dream of stopping the anti-president. You know that cognitive dissonance must be rampant when the two biggest U.S. allies are Saudi Arabia and Israel. The liberal educated white American is now shoehorning some contradictory ideological threads into this new belief system. Trump is a fascist they say (true, but he isn't the first) and stopping Trump eclipses all other concerns (like Obama's bloody policies, or Bill Clinton's, or Bush's etc). And this sense of purposeful hating of Trump is a bit like the new frontier. It is clear there are elements in the system, the so called deep state, that want Trump gone. But it's not the whole truth. For Trump serves the interests of even those who seem to want him gone. Why are we to believe a CIA/NSA/Pentagon cabal hate Trump and want him impeached? Seems to me he is carrying out policy that serves their interests. The ruling class is always united in the end.

Afghanistan: America's War Of Abysmal Repetition
America's all-time most never-ending warsimply stumbles on amid continuing bad news with nary a soul in the streets to protest it. The longer it goes on, the less — here in this country at least — it seems to be happening (if, that is, you aren't one of the 15,000 American troops stationed there or among their families and friends or the vets, their families and friends, who have been gravely damaged by their tours of duty in Kabul and beyond).

And if you're being honest, can you really blame the public for losing interest in a war that they largely no longer fight, a war that they're in no way called on to support (other than to idolize the troops who do fight it), a war that they're in no way mobilized for or against?

Don't you find it just a tad grim that, close enough to two decades later, this country is still fighting fruitlessly in a land once known by the ominous sobriquet "the graveyard of empires"? You know, the one whose tribal fighters outlasted Alexander the Great, the Mongols, the British, and the Russians.

A Mighty Voice for Peace Has Gone Silent: Uri Avnery, 1923-2018
August 20, 2018

We received word early this morning that Israeli human rights activist and long-time CounterPunch contributor Uri Avnery died in Tel Aviv, following a heart attack.

Avnery, who was one of the first Israelis to call for the creation of a Palestinian state, was 94. He lived a sprawling life. He was born in Germany in 1923 and his family fled to British Palestine a few months after Hitler came to power. As a young man he was dispersed leaflets for the Irgun, a terrorist Zionist organization, and it haunted him for most of his life. Avnery would later play chess with Yasser Arafat and become one of the PLO's most ardent Israeli defenders.

Avnery began sending us his column in 2002, only a few months after CounterPunch went online. And they came, usually on a Friday night, with a faithful regularity. The first column Avnery sent us was "The Ship is on the Way," on the blockade of Gaza. The final one, a scathing indictment of Israel's new "Basic Law," was published on August 6, under the title "Who the Hell are we."

Carl Schmitt and the New Right
The intellectual New Right may be more a loose network of persons, political projects, publications and publishers than an organization or party. Carl Schmitt redefined democracy as the "identity of ruler and ruled." He started from the unity and homogeneity of the people's will with the will of the government and the state. State and people merge in the rule of the people. The plebiscite is used to overcome and delegitimate pluralism and parliamentary democracy.

Corporate Media: The Enemy Of The People
Corporate mass media really is, well (to use Trump's recurrent phrase), "the enemy of the people."

Here below is an essay I first published (on the venerable radical Website ZNet) in the late summer of 2015. It is a longer version of a talk I gave (with the help of a translator) in Havana, Cuba in April that same year. It was written from a Marxist and international socialist and anti-imperialist perspective and not at all from a Trumpian, white-nationalist standpoint.

It struck me that it might be worth re-publishing this essay (which was written as Obama's final term was winding down and many of us expected him to be succeeded by the "lying neoliberal warmonger"Hillary Clinton and did not yet take seriously the specter of pre-fascistic Trump presidency) in the light of recent bizarre developments. "Liberal" CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times, the Washington Post and much of the rest of the corporate news establishment are standing up against Trump in defense of blood-soaked U.S.-imperial spy-masters, surveillance chiefs, liars, and assassins like former CIA Director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper - and in defense of the supposedly noble imperial project that these and other current and former top U.S. intelligence and military operatives on Herr Trump's security clearance "Enemies List" have long "served" in pursuit of what CNN and MSNBC talking heads absurdly call (no joke) "speaking truth to power."

At 9am on 9 May, Luis Arturo Marroquín walked out of a shop in the main square of the small town of San Luis Jilotepéque in central Guatemala. Eyewitnesses say a black Toyota Hilux pick-up then drove up and, in full view of passersby, two men wearing hoods shot Marroquín repeatedly in the back.

The vehicle sped off but was identified and, within hours, police had stopped and reportedly questioned the men and found the weapons. But since then, no arrests have been made or charges levelled and the investigation has stalled.

Marroquín was a Q'eqchi' Mayan, and a leader of Codeca, a group of indigenous farmers now gaining political ground by defending people from evictions, land grabs and pollution resulting from mines, hydro dams, logging, and huge palm oil and sugar cane developments.

Accountable Capitalism Act
Text of proposed Accountable Capitalism Act
 http://www.warren.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/Accountable%20Capitalism%20Act.pdf

The Accountable Capitalism Act is a proposed federal bill introduced by Senator Elizabeth Warren in August 2018. It would require that employees elect 40% of a board of directors of any corporation with over $1 billion in tax receipts, and that 75% of shareholders and directors must approve any political spending. Corporations with revenue over $1 billion would be required to obtain a federal corporate charter. The Act contains a "constituency statute" that would give directors a duty of "creating a general public benefit" with regard to a corporations stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, and the environment, and the interests of the enterprise in the long-term.

An Updated and Improved Marxism
August 15th, 2018

It is the rare intellectual who can withstand the pressures of groupthink. This is a fundamental truth, or a truism, borne out not only by daily experiences in an academic or other "intellectual" context (e.g., the newsroom or editorial board of any establishment media outlet) but also by critical scholarship from the likes of Ed Herman and Noam Chomsky. Left-wing intellectuals tend to be vigilantly aware of irrational groupthink among mainstream, establishment types, or even among other leftist sects with which they don't identify; but, like all intellectual cliques—indeed, like nearly all individual intellectuals—they're reluctant to turn their critical gaze on themselves. They imbibe certain ideas and ideologies in their formative years and perhaps refine them as they mature, but on the whole their commitment to the ideology is apt to become rigid and uncritical.

This complacency has always most disturbed me with regard to Marxists, whose system of thought, if correctly formulated, is precisely the most critical, the most self-critical, the most democratic and revolutionary ideology ever devised. I expect intellectual laziness from most "postmodernists," from liberals and centrists, from all witting or unwitting servants of power. I'm disappointed, though, when I see it in Marxists and semi-Marxists. There's a pronounced dogmatism in most Marxist circles. Personally, I've tried to stimulate some critical rethinking of Marxism in various publications, including my book Worker Cooperatives and Revolution: History and Possibilities in the United States and this distillation of some of its arguments (though disregard the editor's oversimplified summary at the top of the page), but I haven't had much success. These writings appear to have been ignored.

Where Have All The Nazis Gone?
The corporate media and the rest of the Resistance had been flogging this event for months. That infamous photo of the tikki torch Nazis had been repeatedly reprinted all summer long. Features on Kessler, the organizer, whose activities seem to have been mostly funded by his grandmother, with whom he had also been living, had been published in major international broadsheets. The coverage peaked going into the weekend. On Saturday, he was featured on National Public Radio, where he shared his views on "racial intelligence." Go ahead, google him, and marvel at the amount of free publicity bestowed on this geek.

And it wasn't just the corporate media. No, the militant "anti-fascist" left had also been also promoting this so-called "rally" as the Return of the Revenge of the Bride of Charlottesville. Affinity groups had been activated. "Anti-fascist" posters had been printed. Militant Twitter hashtags created. Snappy "anti-fascist" slogans, like "It takes a bullet to bash the fash," and "Drive out Trump/Pence fascist regime," had been applied to signs and banners. By Sunday morning, social media was buzzing with thousands of tweets and posts by people hoping to "punch a Nazi." Antifa was obviously looking forward to some hardcore "preventative self-defense" ... all they needed were a few hundred Nazis.

So it was a little embarrassing, to put it mildly, when only a dozen or two racists showed up, instead of the hordes of swastika-tattooed, Sieg-heiling Nazis the Resistance was hoping for. After all the energy and money they've invested in convincing millions of credulous liberals that America is being existentially threatened by legions of fascists "emboldened" by Trump (and somehow connected to Vladimir Putin), to then have this paltry bunch of racist misfits show up for "the big Nazi rally" ... well, it kind of makes a mockery of the official narrative they've been selling everyone.
