FBI Re-Arms Acrobatic Dancing FBI Agent Who Shot Bystander At Club
FBI agent Chase Bishop, accused of accidentally dropping and then firing his gun (as he attempted to pick it back up off of the floor  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueO1mFzr92Y ) after he back-flipped while dancing at a Denver nightspot and hitting a bystander in the leg, can again carry his work weapon while he considers a possible plea deal.

A judge allowed the change to Bishop's conditions for release from jail during a short court hearing Tuesday.

Bishop will still not be allowed to drink or use drugs while his case is pending.

Bishop's lawyer, David Goddard, told Judge Fran Simonet that the FBI strongly encourages its agents to carry the service weapons when they are not working. Prosecutors did not object, so Simonet said Bishop could be armed both on and off duty.

U.S. Corporate Media Push Moon-Truther "Trump: Russian Asset Since 1987" Conspiracy Theory
so you thought rAT's latest  http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2018/07/436380.shtml "Trump stole immigrant children for extraterrestrial black ops" wasn't enough? Wishing for some more amperage / higher voltage?

Have we got a CT for you, Flat-Earthers.

Donald Trump has been a RUSSIAN ASSET since at least 1987!

How d'ya like them apples?

[Wikipedia] Jonathan Chait is an American commentator and writer for New York magazine. He was previously a senior editor at The New Republic and an assistant editor of The American Prospect. He writes a periodic column in the Los Angeles Times.

In the latest issue of New York Magazine, Chait's cover story 'Prump/Tutin' claims that Vladimir Putin is Donald Trump's "handler" and that he's a 'Manchurian Candidate' (Lol!) who ascended to the White House for the express purpose of serving the Kremlin.

NYMag itself blurbs about Chait's screed: a "plausible theory" [Lol!] of Trump's collusion with Russia.

Nobody, still (after 2 full years) knows what "collusion" means to begin with. All of this, without a shred of evidence of course.

POLITICO has put up an editorial (by Tom Nichols) about Chait's claims titled:
'What Jonathan Chait Gets Right About Trump and Russia'
with the byline:
"Thirty years of contacts with Russia are hard to dismiss as a series of disconnected events."

Maybe Trump's gonna broker a real estate sale of the Brooklyn Bridge to the Russkies, and it'll be reconstructed in Moscow?

Popular Mechanics needs to get over there and debunk Chait and New York Magazine, tout de suite. After all they did such a bang-up job [NOT] with the World Trade Center towers...

Disarm PSU Police: Portland State Students Protest Shooting Of Navy Veteran
Protesters took to the streets of Portland, Oregon, Sunday to participate in the Disarm PSU: No More Killer Cops rally organized by the Portland State University student union after Jason Washington, 45, was shot and killed by Portland State campus police on Friday outside of the Cheerful Tortoise, a campus sports bar. At the rally, speakers said that Washington was a black man and the two officers appeared to be white. Students marched from Pioneer Park to the PSU campus public safety office to demand they disarm their officers.

Washington was a Navy veteran and U.S. postal worker. Witnesses told CBS News that he was attempting to break up a fight between two other men and was shot while moving to pick up a handgun that had fallen from his holster. Washington had a concealed-carry permit for the weapon.

According to 2012 data from the United States Bureau of Justice Statistics, 75 percent of college and universities with an enrollment of 2,500 have armed campus police officers. The vast majority -- 92 percent -- of public universities have sworn and armed police officers, whereas only 38 percent of private colleges do.

PSU officials are already preparing to defend the university against a lawsuit. Leaders convened a closed-to-the-public executive session Friday afternoon to discuss potential litigation. The session came even as leaders knew little about the victim, other than that he likely wasn't a PSU student.

The Con Of Diversity
Ta-Nehisi Coates in his book "We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy" writes that "Barack Obama is directly responsible for the rise of a crop of black writers and journalists who achieved prominence during his two terms." But this was true only for those black writers like Coates and Michael Eric Dyson who were obsequious cheerleaders for Obama. If, like Cornel West, you were black and criticized Obama you were isolated and attacked by Obama surrogates as a race traitor.

"For those who didn't support Obama it was the lonely time," said Glen Ford, the executive editor of the Black Agenda Report, when we spoke recently. "It's like A.D. and B.C. Before Obama time, my politics reflected that of a black commentator, probably within a respectable black political spectrum. I'm looking at a fax, 'NAACP September 8, 2007. NAACP regional leader.' I got this after giving a keynote speech in Little Rock, Ark., in commemoration of the events in Little Rock in '57. You see what I'm saying? I could do that, even as late as 2007. Then Obama happened. It was a wonderful time for people who endorsed Obama. If you didn't endorse Obama, you were verboten in the community. All of a sudden you were ostracized."

"I'm not worried by the Trump phenomenon," Ford said. "That doesn't scare me. It's disconcerting. But it doesn't scare me. I'm far more afraid of the space that it gives to the corporatists. It's to their advantage. Trump defines the white man's party's space. It's big. It's no joke. It can win presidential elections. It can win again. It needs money from corporate Republicans, but it doesn't need anything else from them. The white man's party more clearly defines the space the Democrats claim. It's everybody who is not an overt racist. The Democratic Party is not behaving any differently than the corporations over the past 50 years."

Good Luck Ending Racism, Capitalism Still Needs It
July 6, 2018

Recently we learned Einstein put some racist musings in his diary. I'm not here to defend him (the Nazis thought he was racist, too). But that, in 1920, the man who redefined the world could still think race defined us, is no more odd than history's 2nd richest man preaching equality, today.

There are, after all, historic reasons for his opinion, and reasons — we think — ours is more just. Then, imperialism devalued others to pardon it abusing them. Now it acquits itself by liking them. But rejecting a racist cosmology hasn't cured us of racism. Instead, it's allowed us to distance — but not repair — the still-racialized abuses of imperial-capitalism.

Consider, a half-century after Civil Rights, nearly a quarter of all African-Americans live below the poverty line, and the entire community lays claim to only 2.5% of the wealth, compared to a 9% poverty-rate and 90% of the wealth for whites. With current patterns the median wealth for African-Americans will decrease to $0 by 2053.

Now consider, there are upwards to a million homeless Americans. 40% are African-Americans, though blacks total only 13% of our population. Bill Gates, 2ndrichest man, has been battling homelessness since 2000 (theirs—his home is secure). Millions of dollars spent on awareness, pilot programs, and research — with no apparent success — since the numbers (particularly in Seattle) are growing. But we could eradicate homelessness for $20 billion, according to HUD.

Gates could pay cash and still rank 3rd. Together he, Warren Buffet, and 1st place, Bezos (who could give a fuck about homelessness) would still own more than the bottom 50% of Americans, and bottom 90% of African-Americans, combined.

Glenn Greenwald: U.S. Corporate Media Encourages Smears Of Democratic Party Critics
MSNBC Does Not Merely Permit Fabrications Against Democratic Party Critics. It Encourages and Rewards Them.

____________

the ongoing "Russia conspiracy" allegations, which first surfaced mid-2016 after Donald Trump was nominated by the GOP, has blown into full hysterics two years later. Exiled (due to corporate media and U.S. government threatening behavior towards him) American journalist Glenn Greenwald has now been accused  https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/7/8/1778987/-Greenwald-Smears-Nance-MSNBC-Dems-to-Stand-Up-For-Russia-Stein of "defending" Jill Stein (who likewise has been accused by DNC/Democrats of 'throwing the election for Trump') and Putin's Russia.

Pretty ironic when we recall that, as of 8 November 2016 the entire U.S. corporate mass media was — and had been for months — predicting Hillary Clinton as victor with greater (FiveThirtyEight's Nate Silver predicted over 80%) than 60% margins.

DailyKos' frothy outrage was prompted by this 8 July 2018 piece Greenwald wrote for The Intercept. How dare he impugn the lofty U.S. corporate mass media, and moreover the Democrats!

Regime Change and Capitalism
July 8th, 2018

Regime change, both the term and the strategy it describes, has become all too familiar to those who follow the machinations of U.S. foreign policy. Enshrined in the lexicon of our 24 hour media I would not hesitate, however, to say that most people do not dwell on the historic implications associated with its applications. As the current administration proclaims nations such as Venezuela, Syria and Iran to be targets for regime change it would be worthwhile to examine how this weapon of American hegemony has been deployed by previous administrations in previous centuries. While 21st century politicians still offer an exalted claim to the promotion of freedom and democracy an honest examination of this policy readily points to a more base inspiration.

In 1953 the democratically elected secular government of Iran, under the leadership of Mohammed Mossadegh, sought to nationalize the oil reserves of their country. This brought them into conflict with the interest of the British and American fossil industry which in turn influenced their respective governments to actively instigate a coup. The Mossadegh government was overthrown and a repressive government under the Shah was installed preserving western access to Iranian oil.

The following year, 1954, the leftist Guatemalan government of Jacobo Arbenz instituted an agrarian reform law which gave peasant and indigenous farmers access to land being horded by foreign interest such as the United Fruit Company. Refusing to lose access to their ill-gotten gains the United Fruit Company petitioned their contacts in the U.S. intelligence community and within months a CIA directed effort produced a coup that violently deposed Arbenz.

Growth will decline again through the trade war. Why must US consumers pay more for imports from the EU? Why should European consumers be punished with higher prices for US imports? These questions aren't even discussed in the current trade war.

Tribute to Robert Parry: Investigative Journalist and Patriot
July 8th, 2018

Robert (Bob) Parry was born in 1949 and died suddenly from pancreatic cancer in January 2018. An enthusiastic tribute to him and his work was recently held in Berkeley California. A video of the event is online here.

Although Robert Parry never became personally famous, many readers will recall news stories he played a key role in bringing to public consciousness. He uncovered the "Iran-Contra scandal" where the US secretly sold weapons to Iran via Israel with profits supporting mercenary "Contras" attacking the Nicaraguan government. He uncovered Lt. Col. Oliver North secretly working at the Reagan White House to supervise support for the Contras. He exposed CIA collusion with criminals sending weapons to the Contras and receiving tons of cocaine on return flights from Colombia and Central America.

In 1988, Parry co-authored an article which documented CIA and State Department activities to misinform the public to promote the desired public policy.

Next, Parry worked with the television documentary "Frontline" to uncover the "October Surprise". That story involved Ronald Reagan's election team clandestinely negotiating to delay the release of American hostages held in Iran. These stories appeared in mainstream media but were ultimately swept under the carpet.

The Left-Right Political Spectrum Is Bogus
It might be a division between social identities based on class or region or race or gender, but it is certainly not a clash between different ideas.

My prescription isn't civility or dialogue, which though admirable are boring and in this case evidently impossible. Rather, my approach is "philosophical": to try to confront both sides with the fact that their positions are incoherent.

The basic set of distinctions on both sides rests on the idea that state and corporation, or political and economic power, can be pulled apart and set against each other. This is, I propose, obviously false, because hierarchies tend to coincide. Let's call that PHC, or Principle of Hierarchical Coincidence. A corollary of PHC is that resources flow toward political power, and political power flows toward resources; or, the power of state and of capital typically appear in conjunction and are mutually reinforcing.

I'd say it's obvious that PHC is true, and that everyone knows it to be true.

The idea that free markets are historically distinguished from large, powerful states is an ahistorical ideology shared by the capitalist right and the communist left. The rise of capital, its consolidation into a few hands, and the enduring structures of monopoly or gigantism to which it gives rise are inconceivable without the state.

We live in a world where corporate capitalism has always completely depended on state power, and the basic practical thrust of left statism has always been annexation of the economy.

Mediterranean Sea: The Largest Graveyard in Modern History
July 7th, 2018

In June 2018 alone, more than 500 refugees drowned in the Mediterranean Sea. Their boats were refused access to land in either Malta or Italy. They were force-driven back by gun-boats to the North African shores they came from, mostly Libya, but many boats capsized and countless refugees didn't make it.

These are de facto murders, high crimes against humanity, committed by the very European Union. The same "leaders" (criminals, rather), whose forebears are known to have raped, exploited, tortured, ravaged peoples and their lands of Asia, Africa, Latin America over the past 1000 years of abject colonization. Europeans have it in their genes to be inhuman. This can possibly be extended to the 'superior' greedy white race in general. At least to those who make it to political or corporate high office in the formidable EU or exceptional US, or to those who appoint themselves into the European Commission. We should call them "The Heartless Bunch".

This is the so-called West, now led by the United States of America, basically the British empire transplanted across the Atlantic, where they felt safer between two shining seas, than as a rickety island in the Atlantic, just in front of the enormous, contiguous land mass called Eurasia. The Old Continent, alias Europe, was given by the new trans-Atlantic empire, the new masters of the universe, a subservient role. And that was in the making for at least the last 100 years, when the new empire started weakening Europe, with two World Wars.

Can decentralized social networks be a new trend in the aftermath of the Facebook, Cambridge Analytica scandal?

While most digital ledgers and blockchain-based platforms still have problems scaling as more users jump on board, it seems the number of blockchain-based social media is increasing both in number and in usership.

"These decentralized systems are just not made to grow and scale for the masses yet," Anthony Di Iorio, co-founder of ethereum, said in an interview with Bloomberg. "There are always problems with early technology. It takes time."

"join the debate on Facebook" (and-or Twitter) — Corporate Media Surveillance Trap?
^ This phrase with embedded URL is commonly seen on many news-provider sites. Most often it appears at the end of an online article.

precisely when did this become a phrase to use, for websites providing political content?

Facebook (and Twitter) themselves, recommended to the site developers that it be included at the conclusion of their article pages to increase traffic?

Surveillance profiling of online users with corporate profit motive, is the only logical reason I can see for including this as "standard" / default for a news or political site.

Why, voluntarily, get into political debates on the Facebook corporate surveillance platform? What is the benefit to that, for you or the movement?

For (so-called) progressive or Radical Left activists, 100% of their energy ought to be focused on DESTRUCTION and encouraging the demise of Facebook and Twitter.

U.S. Army Is Discharging Immigrants Who Were Promised Citizenship

---

The military is booting out immigrant reservists and recruits who enlisted with the promise of a path to citizenship, according to an AP report. Some said they are being discharged with little warning or explanation, and the Army and Pentagon said they could not comment due to pending litigation.

Last week Lucas Calixto, a Brazilian reservist who came to the U.S. when he was 12, filed a lawsuit against the Army, alleging that he was offered no reason for his discharge aside from "personnel security," and given no chance to defend himself.

Immigration attorneys told the AP they know of around 40 other people who have been discharged under similar circumstances, or whose status is now questionable.

Immigrants have served in the U.S. military since the Revolutionary War, and there are roughly 10,000 serving currently. The immigrants facing discharge all enrolled in recent years as part of the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest program, or MAVNI. The recruiting program, which was started under the George W. Bush administration, offered expedited naturalization to immigrants with much-needed skills, including military specialists and people fluent in certain languages.

Trump Montana Speech: CNN 'Editor-at-Large' Claims To Be "Free And Independent" Media
President Trump was at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls, Montana on July 5, 2018 for a rally and speech. In response CNN's 'Editor-at-Large' Chris Cillizza posted an article  http://www.cnn.com/2018/07/06/politics/donald-trump-montana-speech/index.html titled :
'The 11 most dangerous things Donald Trump said in his Montana speech'.

Cillizza claims that the speech "contained a number of genuinely dangerous lines," which "no president before Trump would even considering uttering among a small group of friends".

Number 6 of Cillizza's 11 points claims that Trump's "impugning" of [corporate media's use of] "unnamed sources is part of a broader attempt on his part to undermine a free and independent media." The multibillion-dollar corporate media 'Editor-at-Large' also rhetorically asks: "Have you ever seen what life is like for the citizenry in a country in which the media is state-run?"

Donald Trump is no stranger to clashing with U.S. corporate mass media, who had a big role in supporting his opponent (in league with the rest of the political establishment of his own GOP and the Democratic Party) during the 2016 presidential campaign. On October 13th, 2016 at a rally in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump called out the U.S. corporate mass media by name :

 http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2016/10/433420.shtml

"... the most powerful weapon deployed by the Clintons is the corporate media — 'the press'. Let's be clear on one thing: the corporate media in our country is no longer involved in journalism. Persecution of WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange continues
5 July 2018

Today is the 100th consecutive day of the denial, by the Ecuadorian embassy in London, of the democratic right of WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange to communicate with the outside world, or receive visitors, apart from his legal representatives and a brief, unexplained visit by two Australian consular officials.

Julian Assange sought political asylum in the small embassy building on June 19, 2012. For 2,767 days—more than six years—the British government has denied him exposure to direct sunlight and adequate medical care. On July 3, he turned 47-years-old, enduring conditions that the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention condemned as "deprivation of liberty," a "violation of his human rights" and tantamount to torture.

The reasons why Assange sought asylum—and why it was granted, under international law, by Ecuador—have not changed. He was being given no support by the government of Australia, where he was born and holds citizenship, under conditions where he faced the prospect of extradition to the United States.

Milk Surplus, Dairy Lobby Pleads: 'Please Eat Our Cheese'
Americans are drinking so little milk, the dairy industry is turning it into cheese. There is such a surplus of cheese, the US government has bought 11 million tons to distribute to food banks.

Despite the ubiquitous "Got Milk?" ads, milk sales have been falling for decades. Millions are choosing dairy-free milks like soy, rice, oat, coconut, pea, almond, cashew, hemp, flax, hazelnut and quinoa. Non-dairy milks generated $1.4 billion in U.S. sales last year, up 54 percent since 2012.

All that unused fat had to go somewhere, and it ended up in the dairy industry's cheese operations.

Trying to support dairy farmers and safeguard the health of Americans at the same time finds the USDA talking out of both sides of its mouth. Even as it recommends "low-fat" diets that certainly preclude cheese, it has worked with the industry group, Dairy Management and the food outlets Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Burger King, Wendy's and Domino's to "cheesify" menus and get Americans to eat more cheese.

Why 'Demolition Deniers' Are Obsessed With The Plasco Building Demolition In Tehran
On January 19, 2018, the one-year anniversary of the Plasco Building collapse in Iran, the website Gizmodo published an article [  link to gizmodo.com ] by structural engineer Alex Weinberg titled "Why 9/11 Truthers Are Obsessed with the Plasco High-Rise Fire in Tehran."

The focus of Weinberg's article was the response of Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth (AE911Truth) to the destruction of Tehran's first-ever, iconic high-rise. At around 8:00 AM that day, the upper floors caught fire and burned for a little over three hours before a series of explosions rocked the building. The structure then completely collapsed to the ground, tragically claiming the lives of sixteen firefighters and six civilians.

The day after, AE911Truth issued a statement, based on our analysis of the available videos, urging the Iranian government to investigate the possible use of explosives. One month later, after compiling more evidence, AE911Truth published a report recommending that investigators consider explosives and incendiaries as the primary hypothesis for the building's destruction. Our purpose was "to help the people of Iran in their effort to understand the cause of this tragic incident."

Fast-forward one year later to the first anniversary, January 2018. Within an hour after we released a video to bring attention to the issue (the video is available in English and Farsi), Alex Weinberg's hate-fest of an article was published. I use the term "hate-fest" not only because this article is unabashedly derisive and dehumanizing, but because Weinberg also openly admitted his disdain of "9/11 conspiracy theorists" in another article he penned on the sixth anniversary of 9/11.

(book review 'The American Oligarchy') Money, Power, And Class In US Politics
Consumers of left-wing media are well aware that America is an oligarchy, not a democracy. Everyone with a functioning cerebrum, in fact, should be aware of it by now: even mainstream political scientists recognize it, as shown by a famous 2014 study by Martin Gilens and Benjamin I. Page. Nevertheless, it is important to continue to publicize the oligarchical character of the United States in order to delegitimize the institutions that have destroyed democracy (insofar as it ever existed) and inspire people to take action to restore it. Ron Formisano's book 'American Oligarchy: The Permanent Political Class' (2017) is a valuable contribution to this collective project.

Over half the members of Congress are millionaires, with a total worth in 2013 of $4.3 billion; but even the ones whose income is of a mere six figures are able to live like millionaires. The reason is that the gears of Washington are greased by a "gift economy," which, to quote ex-lobbyist Jack Abramoff, amounts to "a system of legalized bribery. All of it is bribery, every bit of it."

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Talks to Glenn Greenwald About Democratic Party and 2018 Midterms
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuoKLLLpiuE

House candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez talks to Glenn Greenwald about the need for Democratic Party reform, her views on immigration and criminal justice reform, her approach to "identity politics," why she has taken such unusually blunt positions on Israel and Palestine, and the challenges of running against a machine boss politician.

Her Democratic opponent, Rep. Joseph Crowley, has been in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1999. It has been 14 years since Crowley has faced a primary challenge, thus receiving the Democratic Party nomination automatically every two years since 2004.

Entreaty to Dismantle a Genocidal Empire
July 4th, 2018

Celebrate July 4! Raise the colorful red, white and blue flag, the sight of which turns the stomachs of tens of millions of innocent people overseas, who lost loved ones, mass murdered in their own countries, often as not, in their very own homes, by American GIs 'serving' the good old USA.

On the fourth, sing loudly the Stars and Stripes National Anthem, which sends chills down the spine of most families in Vietnam and Iraq who heard that melody as played by American military bands during the long bloody genocidal US occupation of their homelands.

On the 4th, sing proudly, 'God Bless America,' and chuckle over Obama's family pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who in 2007 was seen over and over again on TV crying out, "No, no, God Damn America for her crimes against humanity!"

On July 4th, 2018, keep your faith in the CIA and don't believe candidate Congressman Dr. Ron Paul MD, seen on prime time coverage of the 2012 GOP presidential debates stating calmly: "All the invasions and bombings by the US overseas, beginning with Korea, were illegal, unconstitutional and a horrific loss of human lives."

While watching and cheering the men and women of the military parading on the Fourth of July, as they are expected to do, try to forget that a renegade former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark wrote and repeats: "US foreign policy is the greatest crime since World War Two."

File Cabinets In World Trade Center Towers On 9/11: Where Did They Go?
As we know (from NIST, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce) the collapses of New York's two 1,300-foot tall skyscrapers on 11 September 2001 were gravity collapses.

Each of the two skyscrapers had many thousands of file cabinets in their offices.

What happened to all the steel file cabinets?

( Sure the paper file contents inside, especially for non-insulated non-fireproof cabinets would have been incinerated — as would occur in any office or home fire. Cabinets themselves constructed of sheet steel. )

Does anyone know what happened to all of the thousands of file cabinets in the World Trade Center towers?

Are there any reports from Ground Zero in New York City, of file cabinets being observed-seen at the site?

In a gravity collapse of the buildings, the deformed or crushed remains of thousands of bulky, rectangular-shaped filing cabinets — far more sturdy and durable than plastic computers, telephones, wood furniture, upholstery cloth or glass computer screens — should have survived.

Trump Ran A Post-Ideological Campaign
This article was first published December 5, 2016 (approximately 1 month after the 2016 U.S. presidential election).
____________

During a panel of the campaign managers for the Republican primary candidates (as they mulled over Trump's surprising appeal to evangelicals), Trump's pollster Tony Fabrizio jumped into the conversation with an important window into the winner's thinking.

"Everybody in this room needs to pull their head out of their a**es," said Fabrizio. "We really live in a world where everybody thinks that ideology is linear, and that, 'if you answer these 10 questions correctly, that makes you a conservative.' But not every conservative is pro-life. Not every conservative is anti-gay marriage. Not every conservative puts 100 percent emphasis on this or that."

"One of the problems is many people tried to look at the Donald Trump phenomenon through the ideological lenses which had defined previous Republicans presidential nominating contests," Fabrizio added. "Donald Trump is post-ideological. His movement transcends ideology.... Through his own antennae — and, trust me, many times I had this conversation with him — Donald Trump understood the fold in American politics. It's the reason so many Trump supporters and so many [Bernie] Sanders supporters agreed on so many things."

Techniques Used To Disrupt 9/11 Questioning
People need to be able to recognize infiltration of grassroots movements because the system will not change on its own. It's likely that only a catastrophic and catalyzing realization on the part of a large segment of society will lead to any real change and recognizing the techniques of disruption could help achieve that realization.

Techniques used by infiltrators or disruptors can be seen as expressions of commonly known rules of debate. Specifically, the rules are reflected in philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer's sarcastic publication, The Art of Being Right: 38 Ways to Win an Argument. Here are a few examples of how these techniques were used to disrupt 9/11 questioning.

For example, with Schopenhauer's "Put His Thesis into Some Odious Category" technique, 9/11 questioning was frequently conflated with positions that were seen as hateful or stupid. This led to some members of the media lumping "truthers" in with "birthers," holocaust deniers, and those who question the moon landings.

The Supreme Court Turns The First Amendment Into A Weapon For Corporations
In an essay for the journal Democracy about the encroaching dangers of the [Chief Justice John] Roberts Court's pro-corporate constitutional interpretation, Duke Professor of Law Jedediah Purdy writes, "The Court has made the First Amendment a new anti-regulatory hammer."

Under this Court, free speech has been equated with spending, advertising, and even data grabs for marketing purposes, expansive liberties that apply not only to human beings but to corporations, because the Court says they're people, too.

Who's 'Weaponizing The First Amendment'—The Left Or The Right?
A recent panel for the progressive American Constitution Society on "The Weaponized First Amendment" illustrated this well. Prof. Martin Redish of Northwestern University School of Law and others discussed the Friedrichs case at length without once mentioning the existence of the actual plaintiffs and their concerns. Rather, Prof. Redish discussed the case in the abstract and proclaimed that just "Because you don't like the idea [of unions] doesn't mean you can you can't be forced to associate with the activity... You may hate the idea of unions... That doesn't mean you can't be forced to do it."

In plain English, the logical extension of this belief is to conclude that people like Rebecca Friedrichs do not have their First Amendment rights violated when the government forces them to do something because they are still free to think that something is wrong. This argument works when applied to taxes, which everyone must pay regardless of whether they agree with them or not, but now it is the favored go-to argument of the left when confronted with First Amendment claims desiring to express the wrong kind of speech.

Housing as Infrastructure
Housing as a human right is sometimes superseded by the right of speculation. Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (a Federal program), non-profit or cooperative housing, and SROs (single residency occupancy) are three solutions to the housing crisis. Strategies like public subsidies for building social housing are known from earlier housing emergencies. The Vienna example shows government housing policy can go different ways and strong external pressure is necessary.

Stop Whining And Start Organizing
The wailing you hear from public sector unions and from trade unions in general in the wake of the Supreme Court's Wednesday Janus decision banning the mandatory payment of fees to unions by workers who choose not to join them in the public sector is overwrought. In many states with strong public sector unions, this has been the case long before this ruling came down.

It's also the way things have long been for unions in the private sector, as "open-shop" rules, called "right-to-work" rules by their advocates, have become increasingly popular with state legislatures. Nevada, for example, has had an "open-shop" or "right-to-work" law on the books since 1952 and unions remain strong and common in that state.

Unions, which back in 1954 represented 35% of all workers in the United States, today represent only 10.7 percent of workers. In the private sector, the number is a truly pathetic 6.5 percent (and it's still falling), while in the much smaller public sector, it is 34.4 percent, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

To survive, the US labor movement needs to undergo a sea change, from being basically a collection of "business unions," to again becoming a mass political movement of workers. They need to be led by committed activists not by people looking for salaries, benefits, perks, a nice paid office staff and the opportunity to rub elbows with the rich and powerful, They need leaders who worked their way up through the ranks of fellow workers, earning their positions because of their selflessness and militancy, not because they went to college and got a degree in labor law or management.

Nationwide Protests: Pro-Immigrant Or Anti-Trump?
Over the past weeks, there have been a series of major protests against the mistreatment of immigrants. The protests against immigration policies in the Trump-era are different than protests against abusive immigration policies in the Obama-era. There were mass protests against Obama's immigration policies, which led to deportations at levels that Trump has still not approached, but in the Obama-era, the protests were organized and led primarily by immigrants. In the Trump era, there are protests by immigrants, especially around protecting the Dreamers, but they are also being organized by non-immigrant protesters with a focus against President Trump. These protests began almost immediately with the election of Trump and focused on his policies of stopping immigration at airports, Trump's Muslim ban.

Democratic Party-aligned groups used the anti-war sentiment early in the George W. Bush presidency to stir up their voter base in opposition to President Bush and the Republicans, but were noticeably silent during the Obama administration in order to protect the Democrats. Is immigration being used similarly as an issue to elect Democrats? It appears to be the case.

A Fatal Incompatibility: Big Business and Human Survival
June 30th, 2018

Dramatic as the title of the article is, it is becoming increasingly clear that this is not hyperbole or hysterics. It is the only logical conclusion one can arrive at if one analyses the facts of our current situation as a species.

Commerce has existed for thousands of years, with private and government-owned companies providing goods and services for sale, largely unregulated for most of that time. Of course, government has always had the capacity to intervene where business practices have been found to be unsafe or unethical, for the protection of society.

As economies have developed beyond a mostly agricultural foundation into a consumer-driven industrial system, corporations have gained increasing economic, social and political influence. Although there is now an enormous quantity of legal regulation in relation to the conducting of business (in the developed world particularly) corporations exert such a huge influence on countries (democratic or otherwise) that we could accurately be described as living in an age of corpocracy. The infiltration of governments by corporate interests is so severe that governments are almost powerless to prevent the wholesale destruction of our environment and huge damage to humanity without causing a worldwide economic collapse.

Most corporations are not owned by one or a few individuals any more. Generally a large number of unknown individuals (shareholders) own them, to whom the directors are solely answerable. In almost all cases, the priority of the shareholders is the maximising of dividends and share prices, which companies achieve by creating as much profit as possible within a given time frame; e.g., per quarter year.
