The polarization following the Trump electoral victory is not what Karl Marx called the "class struggle." But it reflects an underlying class struggle—what Marx called the "uninterrupted, now hidden, now open fight"—which is a real thing, surely, in this country and globally. This struggle between capitalists and workers has never been totally eclipsed by struggles over anything else, including those involving "culture wars" and ethnic identity.
Forget that tired assumption that Trump can't win without the women's, African-American, Latino, and GLBTQ votes. He can win, you fools, if he has the working class! Notice how this honorable term, always central to Marxist discourse, avoided scrupulously in mainstream media (obfuscating/shunning its very existence) reporting for decades, is suddenly back in vogue? The fourth estate along with the education system and politicians in general did this by positing a vast "middle class" between the poor—an unproblematic category, assumed to always be there. To depict the Trump movement as (principally) a neofascist movement—as some are doing—is, I think, to misunderstand it. Just as the working class re-emerges (on the news anchor's teleprompter), it gets vilified as white-racist. The problem with this is that Trump also got a lot of non-white working class votes too. And Trump got 54% of the white women's vote: it appears that while older, well-educated women enthused about electing the first woman president, younger and working class women found her deeply unappealing and if they voted at all, they opted more for Trump. We have to grasp the fact: the rejection of Clinton, who was unquestionably the candidate of the Establishment and Wall Street, a war monger and globalization enthusiast, by the Trump supporters was in large part a working class revolt. Why is this important? Because accurate assessment of reality is important.
53% of white women voted for a man whose respect for women barely reaches Henry VIII levels. Yet in an establishment culture which promotes and celebrates Bono as "Woman of the Year" (as Glamour magazine recently and absurdly did) as a way to desperately and aggressively promote the ultimate fluidity of gender identities, it should hardly be a surprise if millions of women have become tired of Clinton's ultimately pathetic "vote for me because of my gender" rhetoric.
The lessons from this should be clear. If your politics involves associating a group of the electorate with some particular societal evil (e.g. blaming Leave voters for the post-Brexit vote outburst in racist street attacks) then it is unavoidably hollow and directionless, not only because we are all ultimately responsible, but because it results in the exact same sin leftists call out Trump for when he labels Mexicans rapists - it places blame and error on a vulgar stereotype and ignores root causes such as economic injustice. We can either blame working people for the rise of Trump, Farage and other reactionary demagogues, or we can blame the powerful. The term 'social justice warrior' (SJW) has been used sneeringly by the alt-right to demonise leftists who have the gall to try and achieve social justice. The term is almost universally used pejoratively to label progressives rather than understand their grievances, and typically carries the implication that the individual promoting progressive causes is doing so largely for personal validation rather than to achieve a concrete political goal. It's meaning can perhaps most succinctly be summarised by the following satirical News Thump headline: "Hipster claims he was into Syrian refugees before it was cool."
When we look back on this sad, pathetic period in American history we will ask the questions all who have slid into despotism ask. Why were we asleep? How did we allow this to happen? Why didn't we see it coming? Why didn't we resist?
Was this a victory of a show over substance? Was this a triumph of anti-intellectualism rampant for years? Trump capitalized on the economic plight of a very concrete section of the population. Today democracy, pluralism, and liberality are in retreat internationally and even within democratic nations. Who can be surprised when politics is more a poorly functioning administration than a contest of ideas? Today the US is a source of fear for the rest of the world

I've been kind of collecting these "glitches in the Matrix" on Twitter. Basically the Mandela Effect is when large groups of people remember certain things entirely differently, and they are disturbingly certain about those memories. Are they from a different reality? Have time travelers changed our timeline? Are we being pranked? Or do we all just have lousy memories?

Is there a Left in America today?
There is, of course, a Left ideology, a Left of the mind, a Left of theory and critique. But is there a Left movement? Does the Left exist as an oppositional political, cultural or economic force? Is anyone intimidated or restrained by the Left? Is there a counterforce to the grinding machinery neoliberal capitalism and its political managers? Our politics has gone sociopathic and liberals in America have been pliant to every abuse, marinated in the toxic silt of Obama's mordant rhetoric. They eagerly swallow every placebo policy Obama serves them, dutifully defending every incursion against fundamental rights. And each betrayal only serves to make his adoring retinue crave his smile; his occasional glance and nod all the more urgently. Still others on the dogmatic Left circle endlessly, like characters consigned to their eternal roles by Dante, in the ideological cul-de-sac of identity politics.

It's starting. McCarthyism, or the red scare rides again.
Enclosing Trump as a solitary force for bigots, racists, misogynists would be politically tragic, as it is simplistic, in that it fails to recognize the manoeuvres of such narratives. There is a more imperative underscore of why and who elected this candidate that must be teased-out.
Today it is clear that much work needs/is to be done. An immediate and important aspect of this effort is to recognize how our contemporary class consciousness is currently being expressed. As evident, it is a class-identity channelled through an autonomous individuation associated with self-interest rather than a body correspondingly divorced from the means of production and consequentially exploited. It is essential that a clear understanding of where one sits in relation to the distal structures of power be grounded in a recognition of the State and the means of production. What then needs to be taken off the shelf is a class consciousness of shared-relation(s); a collective recognition of alienation as a class rather than a singular neoliberal by-product (or subject).
The most common myths start from the "tax state" that burdens the economy, the housework ordered by the state (save, save, save) to the Schwabian housewife prescribing the austerity creed. Politics will tend to every need of capital as a scared doe and therefore lower taxes... The term reform has been twisted around completely and is used to reduce the social responsibility of the state.

My relatives in Maine are deplorables. I cannot write on their behalf. I can write in their defense. They live in towns and villages that have been ravaged by deindustrialization. The bank in Mechanic Falls, where my grandparents lived, is boarded up, along with nearly every downtown store. The paper mill closed decades ago. There is a strip club in the center of the town. The jobs, at least the good ones, are gone. Many of my relatives and their neighbors work up to 70 hours a week at three minimum-wage jobs, without benefits, to make perhaps $35,000 a year. Or they have no jobs. They cannot afford adequate health coverage under the scam of Obamacare. Alcoholism is rampant in the region. Heroin addiction is an epidemic. Labs producing the street drug methamphetamine make up a cottage industry. Suicide is common. Domestic abuse and sexual assault destroy families. Despair and rage among the population have fueled an inchoate racism, homophobia and Islamophobia and feed the latent and ever present poison of white supremacy.
The suffering of the white underclass is real. Its members struggle with humiliation and a crippling loss of self-worth and dignity. The last thing they need, or deserve, is politically correct thought police telling them what to say and think and condemning them as mutations of human beings. Those cast aside by the neoliberal order have an economic identity that both the liberal class and the right wing are unwilling to acknowledge. This economic identity is one the white underclass shares with other discarded people, including the undocumented workers and the people of color demonized by the carnival barkers on cable news shows. This is an economic reality the power elites invest great energy in masking.

A 69-year-old Akron man wearing a U.S. Marines uniform doused himself in gasoline and set himself ablaze on a Highland Square street Saturday morning.
Witnesses said the self-immolation occurred moments after the man became increasingly agitated while ranting to strangers about the need to protest President-elect Donald Trump. It was unclear whether the man, who had not been publicly identified, would survive. Police said he was taken to Akron Children's Hospital with severe burns. A passer-by who tried to save the man by extinguishing the flames with his coat was not injured.
"Black Lives Matter" is not based on anything. It's just a vague feeling.
Class is the major motivating and environmental factor political leftism going back 150 years and more. Worldwide. Sure during the 1950s and 1960s in the U.S., when Jim Crow laws were widespread across America the civil rights activists had major justification and motivation, with consequent gathered support nationwide for what they wanted to accomplish. But forward motion of the struggle against establishment corporatist capitalist plutocracy, can not and will not be based on "Black Lives Matter" (or a bunch of anti-Trump demos in states/cities where that ticket lost in a big way). This isn't about other persons' opinions of the BLM / related movements; or how your 'feelings' / 'privilege' may have been hurt. It is though entirely about whether or not you will continue down the road handed to you in spades on 8 November 2016. Have you got the guts and willpower to face that challenge?
