Frank Serpico 26.10.2014 14:03
The Police Are Still Out of Control. I Should Know. | By FRANK SERPICO
In the opening scene of the 1973 movie "Serpico," I am shot in the face—or to be more accurate, the character of Frank Serpico, played by Al Pacino, is shot in the face. Even today it's very difficult for me to watch those scenes, which depict in a very realistic and terrifying way what actually happened to me on Feb. 3, 1971. I had recently been transferred to the Narcotics division of the New York City Police Department, and we were moving in on a drug dealer on the fourth floor of a walk-up tenement in a Hispanic section of Brooklyn. The police officer backing me up instructed me (since I spoke Spanish) to just get the apartment door open "and leave the rest to us."

VOICES IN ACTION: HUMAN RIGHTS ON FILM
VOICES IN ACTION: HUMAN RIGHTS ON FILM
While cinema provides entertainment and escape, for many committed filmmakers and viewers it is a vital medium of engagement and a powerful tool for social action. Tackling wide-ranging, thought-provoking issues, activist filmmakers help deepen our awareness of injustice and the values of dignity and equality as they tell universal stories of struggle and triumph. We hope these informative and inspirational films will broaden understanding and stimulate involvement as they reveal hearts and minds focused on challenges that touch us all. Our thanks go to the Human Rights Watch Film Festivals in London and New York for their showcasing and circulating of works of vitally engaged filmmakers, and KBOO Community Radio for their media sponsorship.

Russell Brand 'Open-Minded' On Who Was Behind 9/11 Attacks
Russell Brand - BBC Newsnight Interview
'I don't trust politicians & corporations in this country'

(15 mins.)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqsFp0J22Hc

Brand talks about economic and social pressures facing British citizens, in the above interview.

"... There might be an alternative to corporate hegemony..."

"I think it is interesting at this time when we have so little trust in our political figures, where ordinary people have so little trust in their media, we have to remain open-minded to any kind of possibility," said Brand.

"Do you trust the American government? Do you trust the British government?

"What I do think is very interesting is the way that even the BBC report the events in Ottawa to subtly build an anti-Islamic narrative. I think that's very interesting.

"I think it's interesting the way these events are used to enforce more controls on us."

A NATIONAL CALL: SAVE CIVILIAN PUBLIC EDUCATION
Over the last several decades, the Pentagon, conservative forces, and corporations have been systematically working to expand their presence in the K-12 learning environment and in public universities. The combined impact of the military, conservative think tanks and foundations, and of corporatization of our public educational systems has eroded the basic democratic concept of civilian public education. It is a trend that, if allowed to continue, will weaken the primacy of civilian rule and, ultimately, our country's commitment to democratic ideals.

James Risen: Greed, Power, An Endless Homeland Security-Industrial Complex
(full transcript / video / audio at link)
 http://www.democracynow.org/2014/10/14/james_risen_prepared_to_pay_any

We spend the hour with veteran New York Times investigative reporter James Risen, the journalist at the center of one of the most significant press freedom cases in decades. He has been pursued by both the Bush and Obama administrations in a six-year leak investigation from his reporting about warrantless wiretapping of Americans by the National Security Agency, for which Risen won a Pulitzer Prize in 2006.

Risen's answer to this saga has been to write another book, titled "Pay Any Price: Greed, Power, and Endless War." "You cannot have aggressive investigative reporting in America without confidential sources — and without aggressive investigative reporting, we can't really have a democracy," Risen says. "I think that is what the government really fears more than anything else."

Risen also details revelations he makes in his new book about what he calls the "homeland security-industrial complex."

The High Cost Of Living In A Police State: US Officers Shielded From Justice
Who pays the price for the police shootings that leave unarmed citizens dead or injured, for the SWAT team raids that leave doors splintered, homes trashed, pets murdered, and family members traumatized and injured, if not dead?

Indeed, a study published in the NYU Law Review reveals that 99.8% of the monies paid in settlements and judgments in police misconduct cases never come out of the officers' own pockets, even when state laws require them to be held liable. Moreover, these officers rarely ever have to pay for their own legal defense. As law professor Joanna C. Schwartz notes, police officers are more likely to be struck by lightning than be made financially liable for their actions.

Why is The Advocate afraid to talk about Palestine?
This summer, The Advocate refused to talk about Palestine.

Here's what happened: in mid-July an editor from the venerable LGBTQ magazine responded to my story pitch and asked me to write an op-ed on pinkwashing and Israel's 51-day attack on Gaza, which it dubbed "Operation Protective Edge."

After submitting an article, I received a revised draft which included heavy political editing. I was told the article would be published if I agreed to these changes. The edits included the removal of the words "apartheid," "occupation" and "colonialism," and the addition of a sentence condemning Hamas.
