In the US, the top tax rate was over 70% from 1938 to 1982. Reagan cut the top rate to 35% and changed taxation from corporate to individual leading to exploding inequality and generalized insecurity. Raising the taxes of the super-rich would partially reduce unjust inequality through redistribution. Taxation, investment, labor market, trade and distribution policies needchange

If the story ended there, it would be an Orwellian account of left-wing activists getting government workers fired during an economic recession in order to score points. But fortunately, the story doesn't end there.

[CONTEXT / CLARIFICATION FOR U.S.A. READERS: In Commonwealth countries, Remembrance Day is observed on 11th November, same as Veterans Day and Armistice Day.]
Over the last 10 years the sepia tone of November has become blood-soaked with paper poppies festooning the lapels of our politicians, newsreaders and business leaders. The most fortunate in our society have turned the solemnity of remembrance for fallen soldiers in ancient wars into a justification for our most recent armed conflicts. The American civil war's General Sherman once said that "war is hell", but unfortunately today's politicians in Britain use past wars to bolster our flagging belief in national austerity or to compel us to surrender our rights as citizens, in the name of the public good. For many of you 1914 probably seems like a long time ago but I'll be 91 next year, so it feels recent. My uncle and many of my relatives died in that war and they weren't officers or NCOs; they were simple Tommies. They were like the hundreds of thousands of other boys who were sent to their slaughter by a government that didn't care to represent their citizens if they were working poor and under-educated. Next year, I won't wear the poppy but I will until my last breath remember the past and the struggles my generation made to build this country into a civilised state for the working and middle classes.

Shame, shame, shame.
Can the bungling thus far be contained? If so, Obamacare will "succeed" just as its precursor, Romneycare, did. That Republican program did fix some problems with insurance markets and it did diminish the number of people in Massachusetts who are uninsured. This is all that Obamacare will do for the rest of the country if it doesn't founder first.
The deeper problem is that Obamacare relies on market mechanisms and private ownership of health care resources. In our political and media culture, it is blasphemy to speak ill of markets and private ownership. But they are the problem, and there is no evading this stubborn fact. In free market theology, supply and demand are in concord; wherever there is a demand (a want that someone is willing to pay to have realized), someone will come along to satisfy it. But even the most ardent free marketeers understand that this is an idealization that real world markets seldom even approximate. There are too many coordination problems, information deficits, transaction costs, and so on.

The New York Times' editorial board has made a disappointing endorsement of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), even as the actual text of the agreement remains secret. That raises two distressing possibilities: either in an act of extraordinary subservience, the Times has endorsed an agreement that neither the public nor its editors have the ability to read. Or, in an act of extraordinary cowardice, it has obtained a copy of the secret text and hasn't yet fulfilled its duty to the public interest to publish it.
Without a publicly available agreement, readers are forced into the uncomfortable position of taking official government statements at face value. We need to demand that our lawmakers oppose fast track, ask them to call for a hearing, and exercise their authority to oversee the U.S. trade office's secret copyright agenda.

The blind trust in efficient markets must be replaced and bankers given a new understanding. Profit making is different than profit maximization. Economics should be a pluralist discipline, open and welcoming to alternatives and critical perspectives. Banking should be a public function not a casino and the real economy and the environment not abandoned.

At just this moment in the Middle East, those "plates" are tipping in every direction. There's still time to prevent them all from crashing to the ground, but it would take a masterful effort from the White House — and it's far from clear that anyone there is up to the task.

Council Statement
This statement reflects the wisdom of the Spiritual People of the Earth, of North and South America, working in unity to restore peace, harmony and balance for our collective future and for all living beings. This statement is written in black and white with a foreign language that is not our own and does not convey the full depth of our concerns.
Not only should abortion be legal but it also is well worth arguing that having children should be made illegal (as in a crime). Now here is a statement even most sleeping Americans would agree is a radical proposition (so radical in fact you almost never encounter it). And yet it is a very practical and sane proposition, even to its extreme, logical outcome, that is allowing our very own human species to become extinguished (as in extinct). After all the ecological system of this world doesn't need the human species and would undoubtedly be better off without it. Why would a baby want, for example, to be born into a world of global warming? Or why would a baby want to be born into a world of diminishing resources, in respect to the perpetually growing world population (maybe not geometrically but still increasing) amongst competing global coalitions (and too often Cold War tactics), leading to even more wars, more covert lies as too often official news propaganda (and all the other crime stories the mainstream media reports as our daily angst of fear-mongering umbilical cord)?
The banks are writing the laws to bring back another disastrous bailout!!!
The state has a social nature and cannot only be a power and security state. Since the 1980s, the banks have carried out a quiet coup by spending $4 billion over ten years on campaign financing and lobbying (cf. Simon Johnson).
The Saudis and Israelis are fuming. Obama's talks with Iran's new President Hassan Rouhani point to a possible new direction in U.S.-Middle East policy. Iran is the regional archrival of the Saudis and Israelis, who for decades have shared the mantle as the main U.S. allies in the Middle East.
Israel has been poisoned by the psychosis of permanent war. It has been morally bankrupted by the sanctification of victimhood, which it uses to justify an occupation that rivals the brutality and racism of apartheid South Africa. Its democracy—which was always exclusively for Jews—has been hijacked by extremists who are pushing the country toward fascism. Many of Israel's most enlightened and educated citizens—1 million of them—have left the country. Its most courageous human rights campaigners, intellectuals and journalists—Israeli and Palestinian—are subject to constant state surveillance, arbitrary arrests and government-run smear campaigns. Its educational system, starting in primary school, has become an indoctrination machine for the military. And the greed and corruption of its venal political and economic elite have created vast income disparities, a mirror of the decay within America's democracy.
And yet, the hard truths about Israel remain largely unspoken.

Health professionals employed to design and participate in cruel, inhumane, and degrading torture of military detainees
The report published this week, Ethics Abandoned: Medical Professionalism and Detainee Abuse in the War on Terror, was conducted by the 19-member Task Force on Preserving Medical Professionalism in National Security Detention Centers over a two-year period. The report describes how doctors employed by the DoD and CIA "designed and participated in cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment and torture of detainees," and reveals vast breaches of ethical codes of conduct for health professionals in the name of counterterrorism.
According to Bernd Greiner, more Americans die annually from deadly bee stings than from terrorism. The 68-antiwar movement should have taught us to redefine security, health, strength and happiness and not fall into the traps of militarism or finacialization. Aren't job creation, affordable housing, health care and education vital for true security?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also called "Obamacare," may be the biggest insurance scam in history. The industries that profit from our current health care system wrote the legislation, heavily influenced the regulations and have received waivers exempting them from provisions in the law. This has all been done to protect and enhance their profits.
In the meantime, the health care crisis continues. Fewer people, even those with health insurance, can afford the health care they need because of out-of-pocket costs. The ACA continues that trend by pushing skimpy health plans with low coverage and restricted networks. This is what happens in a market-based system of health care. People get only the amount of health care they can afford, rather than what they need. The ACA takes our failed market-based system to a whole new level by forcing the uninsured to purchase private health plans and using the government to sell and subsidize them. Health care is at the center of the conflict of our times, the battle between the people and corporate interests, the battle to put people and planet before profits.

With the Tea Partiers relentless attacks on each of the troubles besetting Obamacare since its complicated, computer glitch-ridden startup on October 1, 2013, the compelling question is: Why aren't the Congressional sponsors of H.R. 676 - full Medicare for all with free choice of physician and hospital - speaking out as strongly on behalf of this far superior universal health care coverage?
