Looking in the mirror and asking ones self deep questions is important. Those of us visiting indy media are probably already motivated to change the world. Many are probably choosing the best local option for those things we need already.
Theory hardly plays any role in political science. Mathematics has a firm hold on the discipline. You can only publish is you mathematicize. However mathematics doesn't have any answers to questions about justice. Central questions (which political system is just? In what society do we want to live?) cannot be explored well under time and result-pressure.

why I'm not afraid of a government default
when people in this country hear that the government might default on its loans, they panic. obama tells us that they'll have to freeze social security checks, which brings in the AARP to sob to congress and get them to agree to another trillion or so dollars of debt...after all, what's another trillion on top of the thirteen trillion we already owe? but I think obama is being disingenuous, and using the AARP and the like for a political end, that the debate over whether to raise the debt ceiling so we can keep paying for our wars is like demanding ransom from a nation held hostage to the irresponsible corrupt actions of the corporate elite and their government puppets.
After the U.S. government shutdown you'd expect Republicans and Democrats to remain at each others' throats, so different was their vision for the country, or so it appeared.
In contrast to the struggles of working people, the world's billionaires added more than $11 trillion to their collective wealth in the past year.
Class struggle defines most of human history. Marx got this right. The sooner we realize that we are locked in deadly warfare with our ruling, corporate elite, the sooner we will realize that these elites must be overthrown. The corporate oligarchs have now seized all institutional systems of power in the United States. Electoral politics, internal security, the judiciary, our universities, the arts and finance, along with nearly all forms of communication, are in corporate hands. Our democracy, with faux debates between two corporate parties, is meaningless political theater. There is no way within the system to defy the demands of Wall Street, the fossil fuel industry or war profiteers. The only route left to us, as Aristotle knew, is revolt.
The "ABCs of Alternatives" published in May 2013 includes chapters on democratization, globalization criticism, global social rights, good work, Keynesianism, knowledge commons, liberation pedagogy, no person is illegal, peace, rebellion, redistribution and the World Social Forum.

If you think the SNAP food stamps debate is about poor people's need to eat, you're wrong.
It's about big corporations' need to profit. Xerox, JPMorgan Chase and eFunds Corporation have all successfully turned poverty into a profit center. So have Coca Cola, Kroger, Wal-Mart, Kelloggs and a large slice of the rest of the Fortune 500 corporations. Discussions about government spending are inherently bogus because the elephant in the room, big business, is absent.

![]() at a recent University of Florida, Gainesville talk Noam Chomsky was asked his opinion on the collapse of World Trade Center Building 7, in New York City on 11 September 2001. Professor Chomsky's response seemed even more divergent and dismissive than previously heard, when the topic of 9/11 has been posed to him in the past. Below is an analysis of the three main "points" he cites (in an exceedingly fuzzy and roundabout way for such an esteemed academic who's spoken so cogently on so many other topics) here in response.
Toute idée est reçue, c'est le préjugé de l'idée, l'idée du préjugé...
In what is a staggering example of not only state meddling in the affairs of the "free press", but worse, sheer state idiocy, yesterday The Wall Street Journal posted an article on its website revealing that as many as 24 co-conspirators would be exposed shortly in the ongoing Libor manipulation scandal and divulging the names of various individuals on this list.
What promptly followed was truly bizarre. As the WSJ reports shortly after posting the article, "a British judge ordered the Journal and David Enrich, the newspaper's European banking editor, to comply with a request by the U.K.'s Serious Fraud Office prohibiting the newspaper from publishing names of individuals not yet made public in the government's ongoing investigation into alleged manipulation of the London interbank offered rate, or Libor." This happened at 7:18 pm London time, after the original WSJ article had already hit the Internet.
More and more money capital concentrates in the hands of the rich which they let `work for itself.' Every day $1.5 trillion circulates around the globe and changes hands. Only two to three percent of that is needed to handle the business with goods and services. The rest is speculative excess. Imagine: a powerful multinational corporation turns its eye towards the natural resources you live upon — land that is supposed to be protected; sacred, thanks to the struggle of your ancestors. Imagine that this corporation begins to extract the resources from your land, despite treaty, law, and morality. Imagine that your family, your friends, even your pets grow sick -- and die -- because this corporation is poisoning your land, and your water. Imagine that you protest this, peacefully. Imagine that the state responds by sending in a domestic army, waging war upon you.
Now, imagine this: imagine that you fight back.

In the name of national security, there has been a steady erosion of civil liberties and privacy rights in both the U.S. and Canada. Our freedoms are under assault. The amount of information being collected and shared on all aspects of our daily lives has expanded and is being stored in massive databases. Sweeping new surveillance powers targeting terrorists and other criminals are being increasingly turned against those who are critical of government policy.
Glenn Greenwald, the lawyer and journalist who brought The Guardian the NSA scoop [and -- among many other stories of note -- also investigated the 2001 anthrax attacks], is departing the London-based news organization, for a brand-new, large-scale, broadly focused media outlet.
The recent attempt to shutdown the EBT system only backfired.
The practice of upfront payment for non-emergency care has been spreading in the U.S. as deductibles rise. Now, the advent of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is likely to accelerate that trend.
Many of the plans offered through the law's insurance exchanges have low initial premiums to attract customers, while carrying significant deductibles and other out-of-pocket cost sharing. The second-lowest tier of Obamacare plans in California, for example, carries a $2,000 annual deductible. Hospitals say they need to charge patients prior to treatment because Americans are increasingly on the hook for more of their own medical costs. And once care is provided, it's often difficult for hospitals to collect.

While the U.S. media has been obsessed with the in-fighting between Democrats and Republicans, as well as the recent government shutdown and the global/domestic ramifications of a possible government default, little attention has been paid to a looming disaster confronting working people: Obama is again threatening to cut "entitlement" programs, meaning Social Security and Medicare.

During the course of the annual IMF meetings, the Fund, civil society and financial ministers continue to discuss the implementation of an international bankruptcy process for sovereign countries. Since the IMF staff released a paper this past spring reviewing aspects of how a debt resolution practice could function, the process was discussed by G20 members. Various UN expert groups continue to explore implementation of this process. At the IMF meetings this week there are official events and side events that relate to the process.
