Beyond Corporate Capitalism: Not So Wild a Dream
"The first step toward public ownership is recognizing that it is not the radical departure most imagine it to be. Two of the most cost-effective health providers in the United States—one a far-reaching insurance system, Medicare; the other a direct hands-on healthcare delivery system, the Veterans Administration—are run by the government."

Resistance in the Police State: Anti-NATO protests in Chicago
Chicago, during the anti-NATO protests May 18-21, was a stark reminder that we already live in a police state. It's a chilling fact that the ruling elites and this government which serves them have the power and resources to turn any city in the US into a police state overnight. Out in the streets in Chicago, our 1st Amendment rights to freedom of speech and assembly were trampled repeatedly by the CPD. The massive presence of thousands of police in the streets day and night was meant to intimidate and control us. Despite police and city officials' lip service to "allow" us to exercise free speech and dissent, but not to "tolerate crimes," it was the police who were allowed to break the law, violate our constitutional rights, and commit crimes against us with impunity for the most part. In this climate of state/police repression, how can we claim that our rights to free speech and assembly are protected by the 1st Amendment when we were continually subjected to police intimidation, and the threat of being arrested or attacked whenever we were out in the streets?

The Taft-Hartley Act: "Neutrality" as a weapon
All the new rules put into place by the act were directed against employees, despite the neutral-sounding language. Proponents of the act claimed it was a response to the Wagner Act primarily circumscribing management, but such circumscription was the point: Employees had possessed no rights, and the 1935 act was intended as rectification. Taft-Hartley was an attempt to take back as many of those hard-won rights as possible.

ISRAEL RAMPS UP PROPERTY DESTRUCTION
"It was bizarre," said Mohammad Zeidan, director of the Arab Association for Human Rights. "The timing ... we couldn't really believe what we were seeing."
Just before dawn on that day, Israeli soldiers surrounded and sealed off the area, and proceeded to destroy the restaurant and an adjacent building owned by the Qesieh family. The demolition was carried out under the pretext of a demolition order issued in 2005.
For the Qesieh family, the destruction of their restaurant was a violent reminder of the complete Israeli control over their basic rights and only source of income.
"I'm still paying debt from when they destroyed it in 2000," said Ramzi Qesieh, owner of al-Makhrour. "How am I to rebuild when I can't make any money? When they can destroy it again at any time?"

The final stage in the transformation to an authoritarian society of control was not a response to a crisis (9/11 trade-off of 'freedom for security'), but the intended arrival of a totalitarian future, enabled by technological change and the crime of the 9/11 catalyst event.

guatemalan military, and private contractors involved in DEA-led massacre of honduran civi
According to the Honduran newspaper, Tiempo, as well as the Honduran human rights group, COFADEH, the agents of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), dressed in military uniforms, killed at least four and possibly six civilians in a raid which took place on Friday, May 11. The victims included two pregnant women and two children. The newspaper Tiempo did not pull any punches, writing that those killed "were humble and honest citizens." Apparently, the DEA agents fired from helicopter gunships upon a boat carrying civilians on the Patuca back to their community of Ahuas which itself is located in the Mosquito coast of Honduras. According to Tiempo, the DEA mistakenly fired upon the civilian boat because it was well-lit while the intended target -- a boat carrying drug traffickers -- was floating down the river without its lights on.
