The military's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate's "Non-Lethal Weapons Reference Book," leaked online last week by PublicIntelligence.org, is a terrifying treasure trove that describes dozens of ways — some already in-use, others in development or still mere fantasy — for military and law enforcement officials to make you wish they were using the real bullets.

A Call to Action

It is estimated, sometime in late January or early February the EGT facility at the port of Longview will receive its first grain ship to be loaded at its berth. The name and timing of this ship will undoubtedly be kept secret until the last possible moment. It is likely there will be a few days to as little as 24 hours notice of when the ship will dock. Notification will be given via the Internet and any other relevant means of networking throughout the country. We are imploring all able working class people willing to take time out of his or her own lives, to come to Longview, Washington for a historic protest. ...

Occupy at a Crossroads: A Call for Mass Action Against the Suppression of the Occupy Movem
As a first step in the necessary response, there must be a massive political mobilization on a day, or days, very soon to say NO! to this attempt to suppress thought and expression with brutality and violence. This mobilization should most of all be in New York, where this movement started... but it should at the same time be powerfully echoed all around the country and yes, around the world. This is a call for massive demonstrations—soon—carried out in public spaces where they can have maximum impact and exposure and where the authorities cannot pen in, suppress, and otherwise attempt to marginalize these demonstrations.

Misogyny Reigns at 503 W. Burnside
The other night I was walking downtown, when I had to use the restroom. As a former dancer at the now closed down Cabaret on Burnside, I was curious to see what the building looks like after Cabaret was shut down and turned into a seafood restaurant. In the years that I worked at Cabaret off and on, I saw numerous rats, mice, insects and cockroaches in the basement and main floor of the building, and I was grossed out at the thought of people eating in the building, even now. My desire to use the restroom coincided with my curiosity as I was on Burnside, so I walked into Poseidon. Immediately when entering the restaurant of Poseidon, I was faced with two large tanks. One tank had a handful of large, live lobsters inside, moving around in the water. Another tank had a handful of large, live crabs on the inside, also moving around in the water. The things I saw inside Cabaret and the sight of these live sea creatures, along with the thought of eating inside the building, all seemed very unappealing to me. Besides, I just went in there to use the bathroom.

The Threat of War Against Iran and Syria is Real
For those who think that the United States wouldn't possibly instigate another war in the Middle East, think again. Empowered by his "success" in the bombing of Libya and consequent assassination of Muammar Qaddafi, Obama is now seeking to use the exact same strategy against Syria, while using alarming military threats against Iran. In both cases the U.S. is creating the conditions for war in a region that is already boiling over from decades of U.S. backed dictators combined with past U.S. military aggression.

In Syria, the Libya war formula is being implemented with precision: in the name of protecting "human rights," the U.S. is enlisting the Arab League to open the gates for a U.S.-backed "coalition" of regional countries to implement a "no fly zone," i.e. war.

Numerous U.S. news outlets reported--without verification-- that protesters in Syria were "demanding a no fly zone" and an "Arab army" to invade and topple the Syrian government.

Longshore Workers, Truckers: Shut the Ports, Coast to Coast!
Following the nationally-coordinated police evictions last month of Occupy Wall Street and encampments across the country, on December 12 the Occupiers struck back. Ports up and down the West Coast were blockaded, from Seattle to San Diego. Despite a barrage of hostile propaganda in the media, opposition from union bureaucrats and heavy police repression in some places, overall the blockade was successful -- this time. The blockade was called in solidarity with longshore workers fighting a union-busting assault in Longview, Washington and port truckers seeking union recognition in the ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach. This support should have been greeted. But now the class war on the West Coast docks is coming to a head, and it can't be waged from the outside. Bay Area labor has called for a caravan to Longview. The goal should be a real occupation of the terminal by the workers to prevent the loading of the scab cargo. Longshore militants have called on the longshore unions to shut down every port on the West Coast, and the East and Gulf Coasts, to smash EGT's union-busting. Can it be done? Yes, but only though sharp struggle against the pro-capitalist labor bureaucracy.

But He Said That, So It's Okay
Trust is important for each of us as individuals. It helps to remind us of the good in the world and the potentials inherent therein. It reminds us to reach out to one another and that our very survival and perhaps the ability to be something more than just animals making it through each day moment to moment is there as a possibility waiting for us. It is what we have relied on throughout the ages to become strong as a species. It is how we built civilizations and still do today. We rely on each other and for more than just to know each member of the team is functioning correctly, but that there are people we rely on for more than work or to get a job done. There are people that help us grow as individuals and to do so we rely a great deal on trust to help the spark of human potential ignite.

Uniting Occupy and Labor Over Health Care
Politicians are attacking Medicare and Medicaid on all sides--Democrats and Republicans alike. Obama's national health care bill will slash hundreds of billions from Medicare over the next decade, an act supported by so-called "progressive" Democrats. Soon after this "victory" Obama created the Super Committee to balance the budget, which included automatic "triggers"-- if no decision was reached -- that are now slated to cut $600 billion more from Medicare.

On a state-by-state basis, Medicaid -- a program that provides health care to the poor -- is being cut in virtually every state, where they are using their manufactured budget crises as an excuse. This under-funding of Medicaid has created a lack of doctors for patients, according to USA today:

"With a shortage of doctors...[Medicaid] patients have little choice but to use hospital emergency rooms for more routine care." (July 5th, 2011).
