The Portland Public School Board is scheduled to vote this coming Monday (October 24) on a resolution to grant "equal access" to counter-recruitment groups. Under No Child Left Behind, schools receiving federal funding MUST allow military recruiters access to students and their personal information if they are to continue to receive funding. While students can "opt-out" of the military recruitment database at the beginning of the school year, they cannot "opt-out" of military recruitment in their schools.

Masses of young people are no longer reserved about a social system that writes them off and denies them work and existential security. "Prosperity for all" is no longer a promise of the dominant economy. "The left is right" means the global finance-driven market in its "neoliberal" state proves to be as brutal as the anti-capitalists have always described it.
To clearly define the needs of working people and to establish a new social and economic order, Stewart Alexander says he would commission an Occupy Wall Street Council. The OWS Council would be comprised of thousands of working people from local communities, states and throughout the nation. Alexander emphasized his choice to head this national council would be peace activist Cindy Sheehan. Alexander says, "It is my hope that the Occupy Wall Street movement and the OWS Council will help establish true democracy in America."

![]() Beginning on Wall Street in New York City, occupations are springing up across the country in opposition to "corporate greed and corrupt politics." Protesters of all backgrounds and ideologies are gathering to denounce the selfish excesses of "the 1%" - the financial and political rulers of this country who are responsible for these destructive policies. But the problem is not who happens to be in charge at the moment or the actions of a few bad apples. Capitalism as a whole is rotten to the core.
Having no money their purse, and no jobs with which to bind; nor winter condo's in Florida
The occupiers stayed in NYC unperturbed. They have no where else to go anyway So WTF? The one percenters erroneously believe the protesters, like themselves, will soon get sick of the cold weather and flee to their winter homes in the Bahamas or San Diego. The one percenters just really don't get it do they?
Contrary to a rumor started here at Indymedia, Commissioner Randy Leonard does not support water boarding. He introduced the resolution at the city council calling for withdrawal of our troops from Iraq. That resolution passed unanimously.

"It has been left to a protest occupation to say it: Wall Street, a global symbol of wealth, has plenty to teach the world about corruption."

The acquisition and accumulation of wealth are based on many natural and social conditions. Many societies and generations worked so today's possibilities of acquisition exist. General civilization techniques and cultural talents grew over centuries. The so-called performance justice is often only a veil for great injustices.

Brief report from Tuesday General Assembly.
I believe that the 99% protests are great, and can be worthwhile. At the moment, presumably most of the protesters are associated in various degrees with an organization that instantly sprung up, calling itself the "General Assembly." It has dapper "organizers" who go about dispensing money (from where?). It doesn't have to be that way. Other protesters should form their own affinity groups of five to ten individuals and show up. (Large groups get infiltrated fast.) Each group can make its own demands.

Echo's of the shadow government can be heard echoing, like a gravelly voiced man in a parking garage.
"I don't know what the policy is for releasing their names," he said. "There are some who said, 'We like you guys; we'll help you as much as we can, but don't use my name.' ... There are people who want to stay neutral, and if they said, 'Don't use my name,' we're going to respect that. I don't think that's unusual."
Tinkering with the corporate state will not work. We will either be plunged into neo-feudalism and environmental catastrophe or we will wrest power from corporate hands. This radical message, one that demands a reversal of the corporate coup, is one the power elite, including the liberal class, is desperately trying to thwart. But the liberal class has no credibility left. It collaborated with corporate lobbyists to neglect the rights of tens of millions of Americans, as well as the innocents in our imperial wars. The best that liberals can do is sheepishly pretend this is what they wanted all along. Groups such as MoveOn and organized labor will find themselves without a constituency unless they at least pay lip service to the protests.
Just got back from Occupy Eugene Monday night. Occupation of Park Blocks is large and larger every night. Great spirit and unity. Of course Medical and peacekeeper teams are dealing with homeless street youth, a handful of inebriants, and at least two psychotic ranters. Such were in the park before we got here. We are dealing with the people that Wall Street and business as usual elects to be expendible -- and generally avoiding police involvement.

As activists and community members working toward transformative change, there are times when we overlook the importance of self-care and our own well-being. This one day mini conference will address barriers to empowerment such as activist burn-out, the martyr complex, and institutional violence. Please join us as we create and practice alternatives to taking care of ourselves and healing our communities.

As the Occupy Movement gains strength nationally and internationally, questions of "what next" are popping up. Although there are no easy answers or ready-to-order recipes for moving forward, there are general ideas that can help unite the Occupy Movements with the broader community of the 99% which is the most urgent need at the moment. Why the urgency? Writer Chris Hedges explains:
"The state and corporate forces are determined to crush this . . . They are terrified this will spread. They have their long phalanxes of police on motorcycles, their rows of white paddy wagons, their foot soldiers hunting for you on the streets with pepper spray and orange plastic nets . . ."
