Engaging the occupation at the NW Permaculture Convergence free Portland event on 10/13
NW Permaculture Convergence Poster Organizers of the NW Permaculture Convergence have been discussing ways to address the national occupations at our upcoming free panel and world cafe on the theme of 'Finding Common Cause'. We feel that it is no coincidence that movements such as these organized demonstrations and the upwelling of interest in permaculture are happening at the same time. In response to these recent developments, we're going to explore the significance of the occupations at this free Thursday night event. This event is being held at St. David of Wales, located at 2800 SE Harrison St beginning at 5:30pm.

U.S. Election 2012: Alexander says Occupy Wall Street is a workers revolution
As a 2012 presidential candidate, Stewart Alexander says it is time for revolutionary change; "the Occupy Wall Street protesters are demanding nothing less." Alexander, along with the Socialist Party USA, the Peace and Freedom Party and millions of socialists nationwide, are calling for a radical transformation of society from capitalism to socialism; their demands are a challenge to the basic assumption of a capitalist market economy.

How Unequal We Are: Top 5 Facts about the Wealthiest One Percent of Americans
As the ongoing occupation of Wall Street by hundreds of protesters enters its third week — and as protests spread to other cities such as Boston and Los Angeles — demonstrators have endorsed a new slogan: "We are the 99 percent." This slogan refers an economic struggle between 99 percent of Americans and the richest one percent of Americans, who are increasingly accumulating a greater share of the national wealth.

It may shock you exactly how wealthy this top 1 percent of Americans is.

Anarchist reportback and critique from Occupy Portland
We just got back from the opening march for Occupy Portland, and were even more disappointed by how liberal, reformist, and nonthreatening it was than we had expected. The website for Occupy Portland had promised that "proper actions" would be taken against "instigators" of any "illegal activity (property destruction etc.)," which we can only interpret as a threat to snitch to the cops, so we went with low expectations, but this was by all means a massive disappointment even taking into account our pessimism from the get-go.

Congress Looks Abroad to Distract from Wall Street Protests
At a time when the country is demanding that Wall Street pay up, Democrats and Republicans are insisting that China be punished instead. In a rare case of bi-partisan unity, the Senate voted 79 to 19 in favor of opening discussion on a punitive trade bill that would shut out Chinese products coming into the U.S. Another highly provocative incident showcased U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman, Admiral Mike Mullen, accusing the Pakistan's intelligence service, the ISI, of giving official support to the Haqqni terrorist network. This would make Pakistan an official state sponsor of terrorism, opening it up to a possible military invasion. After reading all the patriotic chest thumping in the mainstream media, it would be possible to forget that there are large anti-Wall Street protests emerging all over the nation. This is precisely the point.

Two Minutes of Solidarity at 2:00 PM To those not able to join directly the various occup
To those not able to join directly the various occupations of communities, because of work or family circumstances or situations of ability or whatever real understandable reasons are then here is a means to be there in solidarity. Have a Two Minutes of Solidarity at 2:00 PM. This means if you are a truck driver or a worker in a store or a teacher who could not get your students out to an occupy community or whatever your situation is ... then at 2:00 PM just have a two minutes of just silence in solidarity to all those in struggle for a life with dignity, for those at the various occupations whether that is at Wall Street, Portland, Spokane, Seattle or else where. Two Minutes of Solidarity at 2:00 PM on October 6th. Bus drivers who support the occupations can appropriately pull their buses over and sit for 2 minutes. Postal employees who have been the target of union breaking policies and corporate manipulations, can take those two minutes of solidarity knowing symbolically for those two minutes we are one. Longshoremen could take that two minutes of solidarity knowing all of us are in solidarity with them. Clerks, cashiers, baristas and others can put aside their tasks and pause for a thoughtful and respectful 2 minutes. Ideally just put your hands (if you are able) in front of you and cup one hand in the other and remain silent for 2 minutes. This should be a somber two minutes of reflection on the plight of others or your own economic situation.
