What work is realy worth
The UK budget, and the next five years of government policy, means to persuade, or force, the workless into work. A new study examines the value of work, not to a company or organization, but to society as a whole.

chalking to protect old growth against Stumpqua Bank
poor bank clerk forced to wash off chalk It all started with a four year old who wanted to make chalk drawings on a Monday afternoon. Her daddy decided that the Stumpqua side of the street might make a more interesting canvas than the In Defense of Animals side at NE 18th and Alberta. Not to pass up an opportunity to speak up for the critters, he started a story: "Once upon a time, there was a bad bad man...

Murder rate for the homeless on the rise
Strangely as more people become homeless because the economy is failing and bankers are getting rich at our expense, hatred towards the homeless seems to be increasing, not decreasing. I think it confirms either that Republican propaganda is winning over truth, or else the demographic that murders them is terrified being homeless is their fate.

Dear Mr Obama, Please read the Rev Martin Luther King Jr's speech Beyond Vietnam
Dear Mr Obama,

if Rev Martin Luther King Jr was alive today what would he think of your continuing policies of war criminals Bush and Cheney in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and even covert actions in Yemen? What would the great Rev King say to the class war you Mr Obama seem to ignore? And what would Rev King do about the corporate greed, use of mercenaries in unspoken wars and your continuing stand on a dual justice system? How would a modern Rev King approach Mr Obama's views about clean nuclear energy and green coal? And what would a modern Rev Martin Luther King Jr say to US imperial torture and refusal to take war criminals, Bush and Cheney, to the Hague for war crimes?

Mr Obama tear down this wall of injustice!

This year the tenor is supposed to have been set by the grass roots.

Carbon Credit Trading, the next financial bubble to burst?
What would happen if a $300 billion commodity market were to suddenly evaporate? Of all the vested interests promoting the carbon cult of global warming, carbon credit trading is probably the largest and has the most to lose if the world comes to its senses. An article in Harper's Magazine titled "Conning the Climate, Inside the carbon-trading shell game" by Mark Shapiro, a senior correspondent at the Center for Investigative Reporting in Berkeley, California, takes one through this game. --- "Many studies have found that projects ostensibly designed to qualify as carbon offset programs fail to produce the amount of emissions reduction promised." When did we shrink environmentalism down myopically to this unscientific wild goose chase to sell carbon credits and to ignore the many more real and actually documented connections between pollution and health/ecological damage?

The Struggle for a Workers' Recovery
Stocks are booming; the Dow Jones soared past 11,000; the very wealthy are bursting from their financial seams. Meanwhile, mass unemployment continues, with 95,000 more jobs -- mostly teachers -- lost in September.

As millions of Americans sink into desperation, President Obama continues to preach the good word of optimism, based on the gospel of "private sector job growth."

According to the President, the hundreds of thousands of public sector jobs that have been recently destroyed - due to the budget crises of nearly every state and municipality - should be overlooked, due to the "encouraging" job growth of the private sector.

PORTLAND HIGH SCHOOL REDESIGN -- Questions to Consider
Portland has been rather quiet about the high school redesign issue. As of last evening, it was formally decided that Marshall High School (all three academies) in the struggling Lents neighborhood of Southeast Portland will be closed. Benson Polytechnic High School will become a smaller magnet school, although it will remain a four-year vocational high school. Jefferson High School will become a focus school. The affected student communities and their families have been vocal. However, where was the rest of the Portland community? Were people silent because they did not have children in the schools? Did they not care because their children's schools were not targeted? It takes a village to raise a child. Where was the rest of the Portland village during the high school redesign process? Here are some questions to ponder as the high school redesign takes effect.... Your silence will not protect you (or yours).
