Save KPFA--hijacking a legendary name
The "Concerned Listeners" have appropriated the name "Save KPFA" -- a name belonging to the group of activists who fought for listener democracy during most of the 1990's. Their name "Save KPFA" is legendary, inappropriate for the "Concerned Listeners", a group whose purpose is diametrically opposite.

"The investments of businesses are ridiculously low, as low as after the Second World War. The reason for this may be the immense indebtedness of private households. The Efficacy of Tax Cuts Is Now Questioned
Tax policy and tax cuts in particular are elements central to the Republican Party's economic philosophy. Republicans have pushed for tax cuts as their primary method of fighting the Great Recession and returning America to prosperity. In their advocating tax cuts, many on the Right have waxed nostalgic in referencing the Reagan era tax cuts and their supposed positive economic effects. The "record" of those cuts is held up as a justification for extending the Bush tax cuts beyond their expiration date. All of this as an ideological counterpoint to what the Obama Administration has done in addressing the current downturn. Thus when economists who describe themselves as free market advocates, Libertarians, Republicans and even conservatives call extending the Bush era tax cuts into question one can only take note and inquire further as to why those whom we would expect to endorse tax cuts oppose such measures.

Sad Lil Vegan 30.08.2010 10:11
Vegan Sadness
My ex-vegan best friend stopped talking to me and called me his enemy, because I used words like "enslavement" and "holocaust" to describe the suffering and abuse of animals. He calls this ad hominem attacks, and says my use of those words make him prefer to go out and eat meat, rather than become a vegan again. When I sent video links of animal torture and explained that "enslavement" and "holocaust" are not metaphors and not exclusively used to describe historical events involving humans, he threatened to call the cops on me. I am so sad. I am not a descendant of people who died in the nazi holocaust, nor do I know of any ancestors of mine who were enslaved in the south, so I don't use these words publicly. However, the definition of these words clearly fits animal torture and death too, not just those aforementioned historical events. I have been raped and sexually assaulted though, so publicly I do feel comfortable comparing the forced impregnation of breeding animals and the manhandling of cow breasts for the dairy industry to rape and sexual assault. My ex vegan friend is also highly offended at this, and gave me an ultimatum-- either change my mind of this issue, or I would lose him as a friend forever. It was impossible for me to change my mind, so he stopped talking to me! I am so sad. What can I do?

Activists Storm the Eugene Celebration
Takin on the parade As the Eugene Celebration kicked off with its annual parade Saturday morning, it was promptly joined by some uninvited guests. Activists concerned with the logging of old growth and native forests 'crashed' the parade. Jumping in line after Peter DeFazio, the group outstretched a banner across the entire width of the street which read "No Olde Growth Logging on Public Lands." Despite their unofficial status in the parade, the dozen or so activists entered and marched its entire route to the applause and cheers of onlookers.

By Robert Cookson in Hong Kong

Published: August 26 2010 17:55 | Last updated: August 26 2010 17:55

A number of the world's biggest banks have launched international roadshows promoting the use of the renminbi to corporate customers instead of the dollar for trade deals with China.

HSBC, which recently moved its chief executive from London to Hong Kong, and Standard Chartered, are offering discounted transaction fees and other financial incentives to companies that choose to settle trade in the Chinese currency.

He basically had the same mentality of a cop. Why "Green Technology" Is Not Sustainable
Plenty of other pieces have been written explaining some of the problems with what has been called today's "greenwashing." Excellent points have been raised concerning its deeply consumeristic character, the fact that it actually bolsters the capitalist economic model which in and of itself cannot be sustainable, and the fact that it places the burden of fixing the ecological crisis on individual consumers, rather than on the industries who are actually to blame for creating this mess in the first place.
My intention is not to go against what these other pieces have said, but rather to shine some light on one area of the debate that has often been left too shadowy. That is, the technical sustainability of green technology itself, which often is not explored to the degree required.
