On Saturday, June 26th at 6:30pm the Portland Animal Defense League will be staging a unique protest event against two Portland restaurants that sell the fatty goose liver dish foie gras. Peter Young, Jeffery Luers, Andrew Stepanian, and Darius Fullmer who have been charged, convicted, and incarcerated as "domestic terrorists" will be joining the Animal Defense League in addressing the restaurants & press about the extreme cruelty involved in the production of foie gras. Beast Restaurant and Le Pigeon are the last of Portland's restaurants to continue to sell foie gras. The fatted goose liver pâté is only made by the force-feeding of factory-farmed geese, a violent and abusive process that the Animal Defense League calls "extreme and depraved."

Federal prosecutors - that means, Barack Obama's prosecutors - want to increase Lynne Stewart's 28-month sentence to decades in prison - a death sentence for a woman of her age and health. When all the people's lawyers are gone - and Lynne Stewart is among the last - then so, effectively, is the rule of law. And all our talk about the definition of fascism will be moot.

Here is (some of) their letter to the president:
At a free box I picked up a book that is very important to understand where civilization is going and what we might do for ourselves to continue beyond the collapse of The Final Empire. It's a two part book with The Collapse of Civilization coming first and The Seed of the Future finishing. From 1993, it's out of date, yet nonetheless relevant to the present eco-crisis.
William H. Kotke resides in Glendale, OR and has also written a follow-up book called Garden Planet in 2005. I don't have it, and want to borrow or buy it when I get through The Final Empire. His research and referencing satisfies the intellect plus he keeps it real by calling modern civilization akin to an alcoholic suffering delirium tremens!

Following the political, social, economic and human catastrophes of the first half of the twentieth century and the liberation from fascism in 1945, there was broad consensus in Germany that the socio-economic reconstruction of the country should move towards securing prosperity and comprehensive social participation for the greatest possible part of its population.

A corporate backed group called "America Speaks" is hosting a "Town Hall" in PDX as part of a well funded national campaign to discuss fixing the federal deficits. Such events have been used to propose cutting Social Security and Medicare. The purpose of the picket before the Town Hall is to make sure other voices are heard. Don't cut Main Streets modest programs. Make Wall Street pay!
Oral argument has been scheduled...
As is typical with U.S. politicians and media, an extremely serious topic has nearly been reduced to absurdity. Once the urgency of the Gulf oil eruption has been fully sterilized, the stage will be set for business as usual politics — with the corporations comfortably in the driver seat.
But the corporate establishment cannot act too quickly in its fervor to drop the topic. The environmental destruction brought on by corporate greed has opened the eyes of millions in the U.S. — eyes that are struggling to stay open as they now face the enormous sleep-producing machine of the mainstream media.
The Deepwater Horizon disaster is not just an industrial accident - it is a violent wound inflicted on the Earth itself. In this special report from the Gulf coast, a leading author and activist shows how it lays bare the hubris at the heart of capitalism
The JwJ Economic Crisis committee believes that people going to the Town Hall should go with eyes open. But even more, we are concerned that the Town Hall is one tactic in creating a new narrative that the corporate and governmental elites are writing in this time of economic crisis. This offensive creates the fear of soaring future debt and sets the overwhelming economic priority of balancing the budget.

I dont know about you but i am SICK of hearing about this oil spill while watching drivers continue to give BP their money. This DIRECT ACTION ride will bring the animals to the forefront of the debate by placing ourselves (somewhat) in their shoes.
I've posted two rides - the "Oil Spills and Oil Kills" ride (aka the "covered in oil" ride) where we will meet up and cover our skantily clad bodies in a chocolate sauce/flour combo that looks similar to oil, then ride around demanding attention. and the parallel ride - "Catch Those Critters! Oil Spill Cleanup Event!!!" which will follow along the same route attempting to catch and clean us up. there will be a massive "cleanup effort" at the end of this ride. details after the jump or just check out the entire shift Pedalpalooza calendar
