Economy, what economy?
An economy is traditionally created when people trade goods and services with one another. In this country, that process is usually formalized in jobs, in boss employee relations. In this country there is great effort by the IRS to include even casual exchanges among private persons. That is to say the govt wants it all to be taxable just like jobs and the employmwent system is set up with deducted cut for the regime and all its many henchmen, and of course the few, the deluded, the ones who think government service is for the people.....What happens when the economy is not based upon taxable jobs nor private exchange, but upon government distributions???????????????

Rudacille’s Tome: A Must-Read for Labor Buffs (Review)
Roots of Steel, Book Cover In 1959, Bethlehem' Sparrows Point plant, outside Baltimore, was "the largest steelworks in the world." In its heyday, it employed 36,000 workers. Bethlehem went into bankruptcy in 2001, and many of its retirees at the "Point" got screwed out of their benefits. Deborah Rudacille's book, "Roots of Steel," recreates, via compelling "oral histories," the history of the Point; the collapse of Bethlehem, an industrial titan; and the baleful impact that it had on the lives of its union workers and communities that they lived in.

Changing power relations means taking up the social and political struggle against finance capital and regaining control over social resources. Middle Class Denial of Privileges is Offensive to the Poor

The long overdue anti-government mood is yielding fruits for those tapping into it. The benefits are going to Republicans in places, like Hawaii's special election between the two Democrats and the one Republican and the election of Scott Brown in Massachusetts. Of course, in the former, even in a bad year for Republicans the Republicans should have the edge, and they are expected to.

Boycott BP Arco and products
We have to do something to hold BP accountable for what's turning into the worst oil spill of all time! This is just a first step--and it's not like there's a good oil company--but I just signed a pledge to boycott BP for three months. You can join the boycott at www.BeyondBP.org and make at least a dent in the profits of at least one negligent corporation. My physical, economic, and mental/moral health depends upon maintaining my integrity and holding accountable those who otherwise would kill more people and ecosystems. In the west, BP is sold as Arco gas stations. BP also profits from the war against Iraqis and US taxpayers, the sale of plastics, Air BP ARCO Aluminum, Aromatics & Acetyls, Asphalt and bitumen. I boycott them when instead of using plastics, and other products sold by or using BP oil, I use glass or bulk, local, bike, foot, etc. I boycott BP when I don't use their toxic chemicals on my lawn or garden or in my home. Please post BP affiliates and products.

Puerto Rico: Beatings at the Sheraton
On the evening of May 20, the notorious Shock Force of the Puerto Rican Police brutally attacked a demonstration of hundreds of students and workers protesting against Governor Luis Fortuño. The assault took place in the luxurious Sheraton Hotel, where the privatizing, anti-worker governor was presiding over a fancy fundraising dinner. As our reporter recounts, the police brutally beat demonstrators with riot clubs and pepper-sprayed everyone with tear gas and pepper gas. This was the response of the government to the workers strike two days ago in support of the student strike at the University of Puerto Rico, which has lasted almost a month. It is urgently necessary to translate the worker-student unity that was on display on May 18 into powerful strike actions that shut down key sectors of the economy of the U.S.' Caribbean island economy. We publish here the on-the-spot report from our correspondent who witnessed and participated in the protest.

Rally for Oregon Values at NW Natural Shareholder Meeting
Residents of the Pacific Northwest oppose NW Natural's Palomar pipeline in an effort to protect Oregon values: clean water, protected salmon runs, healthy forests, family farms and a clean energy future. NW Natural, in partnership with TransCanada Gas Transmission, is proposing the Palomar pipeline, a 217-mile natural gas pipeline that would connect to a Liquefied Natural Gas terminal on the Columbia River to the California-bound pre-existing GTN pipeline. With the LNG Palomar pipeline, NW Natural threatens hundreds of landowners in the Willamette Valley with eminent domain, while bringing heavy construction to cross 300 rivers and streams, and a 47-mile long clear-cut through Mt. Hood National Forest. A broad coalition of NW Natural ratepayers, shareholders, environmentalists, fishermen, foresters, and farmers are demanding that the company cancel the unnecessary and unethical pipeline plan.
