A Call to Attack SB1070 and Prisons everywhere, on and beyond May Day 2010
Let us not be melodramatic or ironic, SB1070 is some fascist shit. For years now ICE has been rounding up our fellow workers, stealing them from their families, children, and communities, often regardless of their immigration status. In 2009, 380,000 people were detained in 350 facilities, and the roundups continue. Detainees are held for months, even years, in conditions often worse than prisons built for "citizens" (although many who are "legally" in the US end up there anyway). Along the US-Mexico border, defense contractors have built massive walls at the safest crossing points, forcing migrant workers to make perilous desert crossings. Many will not make it alive.

What is planned for Portland May Day Protests?
Historically May Day celebrated a hopeful new beginning then... labor activists who were killed in the US, and how locally and globally we can defend our rights as workers, consumers, down-winders/down-streamers, patients, tax-payers. ... Then how all our causes are connected.... Then our collect resistance and alternatives to police brutality and fascism. Nationwide protests were planned before the Arizona anti-Latinos law, for Sat., May 1, 2010 in solidarity against attacks on low-income workers and targeted middle income workers, workers denied papers, workers easily exploited because of racism, Latinos, and the poor... all to inflame and distract voters in a divide-conquer excuse for a worsened police state and to pressure Mexico to let the USA control their oil and security. These anti-Hispanic and anti-Asian and anti-Muslim policies allow mercenaries, police, and prisons practice for rounding up and imprisoning most of our population. As the most people lie to themselves that this is not a problem or is actually a solution, or at least is not relevant or solvable, they/we allow ourselves to be the next victims. The more money spent on fascism, the less money available for safe clean water, clean air, safe affordable housing, good jobs, good schools, good health care for all, good self-government, and holding corporations and multi-millionaire or billionaire criminals accountable. So what is planned for Portland in a few days? Who, what, when, where, with what support and solidarity?

Martin Luther King, "Why I Am Opposed to the War in [take your pick now]": many rationales
war killing off domestic budgets and capacities to compromise like "some demonic, destructive, suction tube". Listen to the arguments, as clear then as now on the interaction of domestic dissent/democratization and war abroad. Ending wars are the route toward domestic compromise and priorities once more. "We spend over "$500,000 dollars to kill each enemy soldier while we spend only %53 dollars for each person classified as poor, and much of that goes to salaries for people who are not poor. So I was increasingly compelled to see the war as an enemy of the poor, and attack it as such...and the war was doing far more than devastating the hopes of the poor at home. It was sending their sons, and brothers and husbands to fight and die in a relatively high proportion comparative to the rest of the population. We were taking the Black young men who had been crippled by society, sending them 8,000 miles away to guarantee liberties in South East Asia which they had not found in Southwest Georgia or East Harlem."

EFSC to meeting to hear petiton to protect Steens Mountain from Wind Development
Energy development has emerged as a new threat to Steens Mountain and the surrounding area. Although, ONDA supports responsible renewable energy development, we do not feel it is appropriate everywhere. When President Clinton signed the Steens Act in 2000, a 428,000-acre Steens Cooperative Management and Protection Area ("CMPA") was created to protect ecological, scenic, and recreational resources on Steens Mountain. The CMPA is not the place for industrial wind development, and these proposals heighten the need to further protect the Steens.

Help Influence the New Forest Plans for Eastern Oregon's Blue Mountains Forests!
Hi everyone,

Help protect three Blue Mountains National Forests from long-term Forest Service management harms. Spread the word & attend the [LAST] public meeting in Portland on April 28 at the Red Lion Convention Center, 1021 NE Grande Ave, 5 to 8 PM:

The new Blue Mountains Forest Plan will guide management of over 5 million acres of our public lands for the next 15 to 20 years on the Malheur, Umatilla, and Wallowa-Whitman National Forests. Your public comments are essential - it is of paramount importance that the new Forest Plan is founded on sound science; protects old growth forests, roadless wildlands, and salmon waterways; maintains biodiversity; and provides for the recovery of imperiled wildlife, fish, birds, and plants. Sierra Club members, volunteers, and allies are a powerful influence helping ensure the protection and resilience of these 3 Blue Mountains national forests! Comments are due by or before May 25.

Based upon public involvement, the Forest Service will issue a draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for additional public comments in 2011. The final decision is expected in 2012. Help us ensure this process gets off to a sound conservation beginning!
