Kill your inner petty bourgeois
Americans are possessed by the petty bourgeois spirit. Sociologist Max Weber referred to this as "Protestantism and the Spirit of Capitalism" in his eponymous classic. Accordingly, it follows that the first order of business of any thoroughgoing radical must be to "kill your own inner bourgeois." Who or what is this bourgeois, and what makes him tick?

Contributor media often lost in the void
There is a wealth of information and media on this site that is seldom found elsewhere. Many times Portland Indymedia has been the only open website hosting pictures and fliers from the community at large about local issues. Yet it the little over two years Ive been here its very often the media uploaded by contributors is lost by the content management system utilized by Portland IMC. Its a shame that this media is reduced to a grainy thumbnails and the originals are unavailable (The connection is terminated server-side).

"But wasn't the latest killing justified?"
flyer format This is something that's been asked a lot lately: "But wasn't the officer's use of deadly force justified? I can see why people got angry about something like the beating of Rodney King, which was obviously breaking the law. But the shooting of Jack Dale Collins, for example, was by the book, and as such justified." So why continue protesting? Aren't masked anarchists really just hooligans looking for any ridiculous excuse to cause trouble?
Well it's technically true that all of Portland's recent cases of death-by-cop have been "justified." And that's exactly the problem.

Coming Unhinged On the Far Right
In an interview following the attack on her office, Congresswoman Giffords said that America was a beacon around the world because we create change via the ballot box and not through political violence and intimidation. In thinking back upon much of the rhetoric from the right that has surrounded the advent of the Obama Administration, I can not help but to recall the warning that Sinclair Lewis made back in the 1930s: "If Fascism ever comes to the United States it will be wrapped in the flag and borne upon a crucifix". In spite of the fact that the country was in a far more perilous position then than it is now, Lewis' words were as relevant today as they were in the midst of the Great Depression and they should be on the minds of every true American patriot.

Cops Suck, Pigs Rock!
Hey all, So I know many people are getting heat for calling cops pigs and are being called specisists. The term pig for a cop is not intended to slur the animal the pig or demote its value, conciously by those who use it. It is intened to show that when a cop puts on a uniform they are not acting as individual humans, utilizing their own morals or feelings to make decisions. Theyre actions and the violence they perpetuate into the world is predidicated on the laws of the oligarchy and buergeosis that dictates their relations to other individual people they interact with. (I.E. they personally might not have a problem with someone J walking but they are obliged to harrass the person who does it.) Their personal desire to make more money doing an extremly oppresive job as opposed to another less opresive one makes them the enemies of all those seeking a free and liberated society as they serve as henchemen of the status quo. Therefore its usage is inteded as a simple way of breaking down the one bad apple concept of police reform in the name of abolishing the entire institution.

The speciesist slang term for a cop is "pig". This term has been used for centuries to put a label on cops that is revealing of the character of police and policing. Animal liberationists, seeking to abolish all forms of animal oppression, argue that the term is not only pejorative, parelleling terms that are sexist, racist, classist, ableist, ageist, sizeist, homophobic, etc, but that the term is distastefully used against a common enemy to all freedom fighters of which animal liberationsists are a growing and worthy contributing constituency deserving of respect.

Ruby Meets Pacific Connector in Malin 10.04.2010 10:29
FERC Approves Ruby Pipeline; Wyoming to Malin, OR
Recent FERC approval of the Ruby Pipeline proposed to deliver natural gas from Wyoming to Malin, OR happens to be the same location where the Pacific Connector proposed from Coos Bay would enter CA. Local residents, environmentalists and others are concerned that the many miles of pipeline delivering natural gas would also cause significant damage in the event of an earthquake or other natural hazards. Furthermore this distribution into CA is coming at the expense of neighbor states and decreases CA ratepayers chance of ever obtaining true energy independence.

Thomas Frank wrote a well-received book a few years ago called "What's the Matter with Kansas? The book "What's the matter with Portland?" has yet to be written. It would tell much the same story, but would include at least a reference or two to what still passes for a "left" in this country, and why this is such a fatal illusion.

What happened in Olympia -- Some notes on opacity
On April 8, 2010, the metropolis finally opened its arms to us. With a history of somewhat homogenous anarchist events in Olympia, WA, we attempted to detach ourselves from the traditional mode of collective attack that the city has become familiarized with. Rather than bloc up, cause some destruction, and try to run away before the police snatch us, we decided to have a march in response to recent state violence wherein smashing a few windows and avoiding arrest wasn't the purpose of the action. Instead, we hoped to create something of a fairly calm spectacle that the police would be drawn to, creating potentialities for rifts elsewhere in the metropolis while the police tried to contain our march. All in all, the march's main goal was to maximize damage elsewhere while minimizing risk at the march itself. With this objective in mind, the action was a complete disaster.
