Citizen Money as a Bold Social Utopia
"Spring has returned. The earth is like a child that knows poems." (Rainer Maria Rilke) Citizen money would guarantee a reasonable life for all. Citizen money challenges our social and cultural assumption and uncouples work and income. A basic income for all would replace the idiotic guaranteed income for the rich.

Communiqué From the Streets of Portland
Today, fifty anarchists arrived at five p.m with the intention of taking and holding space at the intersection of James Chasse's death. At some point during the night, a creative and sneaky comrade had changed the street sign at the intersection to read "James Ave," a tribute to the lost community member who was killed at the hands of the Portland Police in 2006.

Rwanda Genocide: Honoring the Dead without Honoring the Lies
On April 7 the United Nations began its annual commemoration of the anniversary of what we know as the 1994 Rwanda Genocide, when as many as one million Rwandans were slaughtered in 100 days.
The ceremonies raise several questions for all those who contest the received history of the Rwanda Genocide: How to honor Rwanda's dead without honoring the lies?
And, how to honor six million more Congolese dead, but not commemorated, in the ongoing aftermath of the Rwanda Genocide when Rwanda's war crossed its western border into neighboring D.R. Congo?

The Coming Internet Protection Racket or Rentier Digital Capitalism
Without Common Carrier status, predatory companies like Comcast will inevitably start demanding a take of any profitable new economic activity dependent on the Internet. They will be able to use the threat of arbitrary service disruption to make demands on independent businesses. They will also start offering "tiered" services, where access to various protocols will be dependent on paying for special "elite" or "gold" subscriber status. Running a website will be out of the question without paying an assortment of special fees, split among a consortium of business interests and justified by appealing to precedents like HDTV and "Trusted Platform Computing." There will be legal and antitrust wrangling over the matter, but how effective has that been recently against digital age would-be monopolists? (Think Microsoft.)

The Politics of Impatience: An open letter from anarchists
We are shocked that on March 4th at Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY), some anarchists harmfully disrupted a protest against tuition hikes, budget cuts, and childcare cuts. Some of the facts of what happened are in dispute. Some are not, including the following: A faculty member and longtime media activist was injured in the head, sectarian graffiti was spray-painted, and a parent from Defend Hunter Childcare was targeted with a sexist epithet that was heard by some as a rape threat. Some of the individuals involved have apologized for their actions. But we still need to ask why this happened, how anarchists could be responsible for these things. And how to make sure it never happens again.

He told the audience at the Winter Soldier hearings that took place March 13-16, 2008, in Silver Spring, Maryland, "She was carrying a huge bag, and she looked like she was heading toward us, so we lit her up with the Mark 19, which is an automatic grenade launcher, and when the dust settled, we realized that the bag was full of groceries. OLIN STUDY GROUP APRIL 2010: on the global and local scope of police violence...
Monday April 12 2010 6pm at In Other Words Women's Books and Resources 8 NE Killingsworth

Olin hosts a study group the second Monday of every month from 6-8pm at In Other Words*. Each month we choose a different theme and read an article for discussion.
While every month is different, past discussions have revolved heavily around how our background in international solidarity work can be applied and manifested locally. On what we can learn in our struggles here at home by looking across the borders and also how our work is unique.

This month we chose an article written with that in mind, with the intention of making those connections. While this article focuses on events in Minneapolis and Oaxaca specifically the local and international relevance at this moment should be clear:  http://elenemigocomun.net/3050/x/en
