Rep. Hasegawa and Rep. Chase sponsored a bill authorizing the creation of a state bank, HB 3162.
The State of North Dakota is one of the only states with a strong economy. This is partly because they maintain a state bank that supports their economy at all levels. The Federal Government has failed to require lending practices that would provide a return on our local investment in the bailout. The establishment of a state bank would fund the small and medium sized businesses that desperately need it here. Rep. Hasegawa says the bill should receive a hearing in the Financial Institutions & Insurance Committee soon, tentatively scheduled for March 2. Please contact your State Representatives to urge them to support HB 3162, for the establishment of a WA State Bank.

A San Mateo County judge is scheduled to hear testimony on Thursday morning in this case, which could set new ground rules for when police can conduct warrantless searches of iPhones, laptops, and similarly capacious electronic gadgets.
Feasel said the county's position is that a search of a handheld device that takes place soon after an arrest is lawful. Attorneys for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the San Francisco civil liberties group that's representing Taylor, have asked the court to suppress any evidence obtained from the search of his iPhone. They say the search was "unconstitutional" because it was done without a warrant--and they say it also may have violated a 1986 federal law designed to protect the privacy of e-mail messages

The powerful new coalition of domestic and overseas charities, unions and church groups argue that a Robin Hood tax could generate $700bn (£450bn) worldwide. The tax would see 0.05% levied on each bank trade ranging from shares to foreign exchange and derivatives, creating a cash pile to be spent on measures to combat domestic. international poverty and climate change.

Please immediately post inspiring, constructive movie/book pairs on how to resist social control/mind control in an increasingly fascist world that my sensitive, already-politically savvy daughter can propose to her high school teacher as an alternative to depressing, cynical, violent ones that teach insensitivity and learned helplessness. She is highly sensitive to violence. She knows deeper foreboding analyses of current events and history, and evil plans for our future. She already knows more than most adults about problems; she needs uplifting solutions and images that will sustain her under oppression while under persecution and privation, when she seems to be the only one speaking out. She needs to learn how to stay alive when she would be one of the first targeted for her leadership and moral courage, and how to keep her hope/faith, her inner joy, her effective clarity.

With the growing awareness of global warming and subsequent climate change, we realize we must move from fossil fuels to alternative energy sources. We hear increasing calls for the use of nuclear power as a substitute for fossil fuel with many calling for the development of nuclear energy as a way to stop or remedy our environmental crisis. Others find this to be a false path.

"The profit system has hit an historic dead-end and this gridlock is a result of deep trends to do with the decline in capitalism as a mode of social production (falling wages and profits and the concomitant explosion in financial speculation and debts).
Widespread poverty and human misery is now seen on a massive scale in the so-called developed world. Some 40 million Americans, for example, are subsisting on food stamps. The distinction between "developed" and "developing" economies (always a myth anyway) is blurred. The ranks of the world's long-suffering poor are swelled with dispossessed blue and white-collar workers and their families from across the US and Europe. Together more than ever, they stand shut out from those gated havens of obscene wealth for a global minority."

Some cancer is too aggressive even for chemotherapy. The US political system is infected with such a disease; and we may be witnessing the first death spasms. In a country ravaged by war and economic crisis, with tens of millions of people suffering, politicians are capable of doing absolutely nothing to help ordinary people. The only two "achievements" of the Democrat's super majority in the Senate — over the course of five months — were an ineffectual stimulus package and a "surge" of troops in Afghanistan.
